Diner Reviews
  • "Once a must-goto-destination for a special dinner with my out of town visitors, our last visit was disappointing to say the least. The shaking beef was overcooked and salty, the watermelon salad was meh, the chicken in clay pot just ok. The halibut and the panna cotta saved the meal, but nothing was inspiring and special at the end of the day. The service was so bad that we were constantly waving our hands to get the attention of our server. I am glad we also ordered more food than he recommended for four people. We wondered whether the kitchen was off as there were several large parties that night. The view is as usual magical but you can not eat that."

  • "The daikon rice cakes were awesome and the food to the most part especially the desserts were really great. We appreciated that our dietary requirements were taken into consideration and appropriate adjustments were made. The waitress could have been more attentive with water and coming over often to check on us, we saw she was busy but we felt like we had to wait on a few occasions. Not something you expect at a restaurant of this calibre. We didn't have to wait too long for our food to arrive, and all courses had something we loved! Overall our dining experience was quite good."

  • "We heard such great things about Slanted Door--maybe our expectations were raised too much so we were bound to be disappointed. The food was delicious, but the service was lacking. Our table of 4 ordered 2 appetizers, 3 entrees, and 2 vegetable sides. No issues with the appetizers and the first 2 entrees and 1 vegetable showed up promptly. There was a long gap between before the 3rd entree arrived; by now the rice was gone. No server in sight. We finally were able to inquire about the missing vegetable and was told that the kitchen was small and that it was not unusual for dishes to arrive at different times--no apologies and no offer to check. 3rd entree gone and table being cleared. Still no vegetable and no server in sight."

  • "We had to wait 25 minutes for our table and then got seated at a table for 8 (we had 4). Not a good start. I asked to move and we got relocated under the heaters outside on a beautiful night. Food was great. Wine was great. Service was great."

  • "Goid food and great atmosphere. They were slammed and on a Saturday night. Didn't sit until 20 minutes after reservation but once we did service was timely and attentive. We sat by window and I had nice view of water and bridge; my husband of entire restaurant and kitchen. Best dish was the wood roasted oven Manila clams - good heat and broth that you didn't want to stop drinking.  The spring rolls were light and fresh and I liked the unique touch with pork in them.  We shared the halibut in spicy cilantro sauce, which was nice but needed salt and was just a tad over cooked.  I thought the desser if nectarine almond-walnut frangipani with peach yogurt was excellent and the perfect size."

  • "What a treat! I only wish I lived close enough to be a regular."

  • "The food was excellent. The location has a great view. The only down side was the fact that the service fell off toward the end of our dinner. It was a Friday night 9:15 reservations. We didn't get seated tell 9:25 almost 9:30. Service started out fast but after the appetizers. Took another 30 min for the main course. And when it got to dessert. It took at Least 15 min. To get that order ( their homemade churros good, and some coffee) the churros came out but the coffee didn't show up tell the check for me to pay came out. I blamed the service towards the end on the count that it was nearing closing and they all want to go home. Excluding some of the service the resturant was great"

  • "This a great lunch spot. Amazing Asian food. Spectacular flavours. Service was awesome. Great wine was recommended. Reasonably priced. View of the Bay bridge if sitting outside."

  • "We used to eat at the original location on Valencia St. years ago and the food was always great. Well, the food was almost as good as it used to be at more than twice the price but the service was terrible! Goi Cuon for 12 dollars!!! 5 dollars for a tiny bowl of brown rice!!! REALLY??? For the price and the hype this should have been an elegant experience. There was no gracious greeting. Our server built no rapport. The busboy was bussing our table, rag and all, before my wife had finished eating! The view is great and the food good. Sadly, we won't be back. Do yourself a favor and get take-out from Tu Lan and go sit at a bench behind the ferry building, enjoy the food and view for 1/3 of the price with no bad vibe!"

  • "After multiple recommendations, I finally decided to visit Slanted Door on my last trip to San Francisco. The space is huge and very noisy - great views of the bay. Everyone raves about the Spring Rolls, which we ordered. They were good, but I can get better spring rolls at almost any vietnamese restaurant in my neighbourhood - nothing to deserve all the hype. We had the lemongrass chicken which was delicious, the shrimp with caramelized sauce (good) and a plate of catalan broccoli which was basically regular broccoli for 12$. As someone who has eaten at many Asian restaurants, I would say that the food here is good but nothing outstanding - definitely not worth the hype. Positive points: Nice view and good service despite being very busy."

  • "Wonderful food and service! Cellophane noodles with dungess crab were superb, as were the spring rolls. Hope I can return to SF again soon to taste more of their extravagant menu."

  • "Slanted Door was delicious! My boyfriend and I loved everything we tried. The restaurant was packed, and really loud. I can tell this is a hot spot in SF."

  • "I have been to Slanted Door many times and continue to enjoy the inventive and delicious food, the great service, and the lovely views. I always choose this restaurant for special occasions."

  • "It was a contrast having just come from the Redwood Room at The Clift Hotel where the vibe was cozy and dark to move to The Slanted Door where it's more brightly lit and completely energized. The food was fantastic and the wine recommendation was stellar!"

  • "The ambient noise (exacerbated by the techno drum noise coming from the speakers in the ceiling) really detracts from an otherwise great experience. Impossible to carry on a conversation. It's baffling that the restaurant continues to ignore the many customers and professional reviewers who have commented on the ridiculous level of noise. Very good food. Great wines at great prices. Outstanding service. Nice views of the bay."

  • "I made reservations at Slanted Door after seeing it on Eater 38 & from a friend's recommendation. I was really looking forward to finally tasting Chef Phan's food & it definitely lived up to my expectations. The Imperial Rolls were fresh and crispy. The Short Ribs were so tender the meat just melted off the bone but the curry in the sauce/broth was just a tad heavy for someone who doesn't eat it often. The Stir Fried Chicken was just divine! I could eat that every day. You can tell all of the ingredients are the freshest and highest quality. The food was really superbly done so that the flavors were distinct but nothing hit you in the face. It's an approachable menu for someone unfamiliar with Vietnamese cuisine. And the view is incredible!"

  • "Dined with the slanted door last week for business and our experience was ok as our server was not the best I've had. Another business dinner this week with a different server and I give the slanted door a 10! A perfect dining experience! Hope to have another dinner there soon!"

  • "The food was incredible and creative. Each dish we had was "oh, wow!" I must credit our wonderful waiter, who pointed out that we could get 1/2 orders (and thus try more different dishes) of many things. We ordered all his recommendations, and our main dish was the shaking beef, which created a delicious spread and a rainbow of flavor experiences. We had to wait over a half hour from our reservation time to be seated, but our waiter made the wait worthwhile. Took off one star for ambience because the tables are fairly well packed in to seat as many as possible; not your romantic dinner setting. All in all, the main thing is the food and Slanted Door is better than great, it's fabulous!"

  • "Highest grossing restaurant in SF last year and James Beard culinary award winner so yes it's that good. That being said little aesthetic touches are missing to improve the dining experience. Chairs are flimsy, hard side chair type, floor plan is open and not intimate/noisy and seating arrangement fails to take in the gorgeous view of the Bay and Bridge. Moscow Mule is a featured drink but not served in copper cup. Food is amazing - filet and gulf shrimp are tops for entrees and Manila clams are excellent from appetizer list. Make reservations or forget about getting in!"

  • "We arrived at Slanted Door just as they opened for our 11 o'clock reservation, we were seated promptly at a booth where we had a nice view of the bay. I should say, regarding my reservation; they sent an email reminder and I received a telephone call the day before. Our waiter was courteous, offered her advice on the amount of food, favorite dishes and drinks, and took our picture at the end of our meal. The food was quick and tasty, tow favorites of our party were the papaya salad and the steak, the cellophane noodles with crab, was a bit bland, but there was an abundance of crab and it complimented our other dishes. All in all a wonderful experience and we discussed a yearly gathering!"

  • "Have a picky guest? There's no place better than this for outstanding and interesting food, with sequential service that keeps the evening lively and moving along ... and supports the freshest and perfectly spiced food along with an ultimately satisfying experience."

  • "We were looking forward to our visit as we hadn't been to the Slanted Door, Ferry Building, restaurant for sometime, but sadly we were super disappointed with the food and service. I was shocked by the sizable increase in the prices on the food and the decreased portion size. My suspicions are this anchor restaurant has to bring in higher profits to cover the losses on their other ventures. Their neighborhood restaurant on Valencia was the best and Charles seems to have lost his way/focus since then."

  • " food wonderful but noise level is deafening...Why do they add music to an already noisy room with all hard surfaces??? Recommended for those who don't mind the noise."

  • "I have been going to the Slanted door since it opened in the mission. Now a crazy busy restaurant i was worried we would be let down.Well it was fantastic from the very beginning to the cotton candy at the end.I had asked on a saturday night if we could have a nice table and we got it.Service ,food, and the well chosen wine list to suit the food were superb.Despite the volume they are on it after all these years.I eat out all the time and this place just keeps on going."

  • "Very good food--some dishes outstanding. First-rate service. Noise level close to unbearable--decibel level consistently 95+. Why do so many restaurants think this is essential to their "vibe"?"
    Dined on 7/11/2014
  • "We've been to the old valencia location many times and it was always great. Always hesitated trying the new location as it seemed too loud sterile and impersonal. Now, 10 years later, we decided to go again. Too bad. 225$ later and an hour in the car each way, we found out we were correct."

  • "We were 4 people on our way to a Giants afternnon baseball game. The food was great and the service was top shelf BUT when will restaurants realize that there is a major drought in California. Water appeared without aking for it and the tumblers were refilled constantly. Responsible restauraneurs should adjust to the current water shortage, It is not cosidered poor service to let a patron ask for water and ask for refills. When we left, there were 4 full glasses on the table to be discarded. If I am taking shorter showers, it is not inreasonable to take a water conservation position at a restaurant."
