Slanted DoorAlways a great mealI live in Monterey and eat here every yr before the SF 1/2 marathon or whenever in town. Always a great meal. A good excuse to drive to the city. Great Ginger lime cocktail.6/15/2013 12:00:00 AMCellophane Noodles are a must!Everything was delicious, but I cannot stop thinking about the cellophane noodles with crab!6/14/2013 12:00:00 AMVery interesting Asian fusionVery interesting Asian fusion restaurant - or should it be labeled, French Asian. Wine list is mostly French. Food is mostly Asian. Plan on sharing dishes - it's the best way to do this restaurant.
Our friends said it was one of the best meals they ever had. It was very good, but not one of the best. We were at the end of our week long vacation, so perhaps we were a little restaurant-out!
With two people, you end up sitting pretty close with other twosome's. Frotunately the noise level is so loud, it's hard to hear each other.
But great view of the Bay Bridge lights, the ferry stations, and the bay itself. The people watching is also pretty terrific!6/13/2013 12:00:00 AMGo for the spring rolls! This is a very busy place, but the staff handles everything very efficiently. Whatever you do, order the Slanted Door spring rolls with peanut dipping sauce. They are large and full of fresh flavor. We also enjoyed the shaking beef, caramelized wild gulf shrimp and baby bok choy. A low-alcohol (12.5%) German pinot noir went very well with our food. The server and sommelier offered helpful suggestions. Can't wait to try more of their dishes on our next visit.6/13/2013 12:00:00 AMAwesome Views, Great Food!!!We went for lunch while on our honeymoon, everything was superb - The service, the food, and cocktails...
We didn't know when to stop ordering...6/13/2013 12:00:00 AMGreat FoodService and food were outstanding, but it is a bit loud. We ate at a table, next time I would ask for a booth6/13/2013 12:00:00 AMOne of the BestAlways enjoy meals at this delightful place
Great food and perfect view of bay
We had delicious items
Everyone enjoyed the meal especially our guest from Finland6/12/2013 12:00:00 AMTrue fine dining in a vibes environGreat Menu, top level Asian Fusion. We had the restaurant signature dishes which the waitress recommended teamed with the sommeliers selection all added up to a great dining experience.6/11/2013 12:00:00 AMExcellent experience, top to bottomGreat selection of interesting drinks. Fabulous food, brought to the table direct from the kitchen--hot! Service that brought it all home. The sommelier was positively psychic, coming over at the perfect moment, recommending an excellent and inexpensive wine. We will be back.6/9/2013 12:00:00 AMImaginative Vietamese cuisineFood was terrific and we vegetarians had some good choices. The setting was beautiful, with a gorgeous view of the bay and upscale decor. Our service was just right, not too suffocating, but there whenever you needed them. But you must make reservations way in advance -- we couldn't get in at night anytime we were in town for our visit, even planning multiple days in advance, so we settled for Sunday brunch.6/9/2013 12:00:00 AMEnjoyableThe experience at Slanted Door was positive. The food is wonderful and deserves to be praised. After having two appetizers, delicious filet mignon and spinach, we were delighted by the flavors. To our agreement, however, the spinach was bland. The server recommended it over another vegetable so to have to borrow the lemon juice from the mignon dish to flavor the spinach was a bit of a let down. But for the sake of the rest of the meal (and then dessert), The Slanted Door rocked. After making a reservation, I did expect a more private seating arrangement. Don't expect that at this establishment. The noise level is loud and seating is tight-knit. Hint: the lounge area is much more intimate which includes food service.6/9/2013 12:00:00 AMThe food and service was veryThe food and service was very good and I would recommend this restaurant to my friends who loves dining out.6/8/2013 12:00:00 AMTummy TreatWe rarely go out to dine but wanted to treat some good friends to a great dining experience to let them know they were special. We were given a roomy booth-like table with a view of the bay. The wine list was excellent and the waiter suggestion was spot on. Once we had the oysters and imperial rolls and especially the scallops for appetizers we knew we had chosen the right restaurant. Everything to follow was delicious and attractive when delivered. Couldn't miss withe the rack of lamb but the Stir fried chicken won our hearts. The shaking beef was a great runner up. Desert and coffee completed our dining experience. The service was efficient and congenial so four stars for our servers! All in all a great experience.6/8/2013 12:00:00 AMEverything about this placeEverything about this place is super but the noise level is off the charts. So just go and eat and forget talking!6/7/2013 12:00:00 AMWell done!Great service and great food. Many servers running around waiting on your table. Try the shakin beef or scallops! Don't forget the crispy spring rolls....excellent!6/7/2013 12:00:00 AMBiz lunchReally great food and service, a little noisy for a serious business meeting.6/6/2013 12:00:00 AMA Foodies DelightEvery morsel was scrumptious! The fresh ingredients were aromatic. I brought a friend from L A who thought this would be a trendy mediocre restraunt, and she was blown away by the food. The noise level was high but we were there for dinner and what a pleasure it was!6/5/2013 12:00:00 AMMy favorite place in the world.....Pretty extreme to name this my fav in the world and I may not feel this way if I didn't discover the awesomeness of dining at the bar! Always the very best service and the most charming and amazing bartenders/servers taking care of you. The food is fresh and delicious and consistent. I have a hard time not including it with each trip to the city. Shout out to Noel, the hottie Aussie that made our last trip in an excellent one! But then again, thats what I've come to expect. Thanks SD, see you soon!6/5/2013 12:00:00 AMFantastic mealEverytime I dine at Slanted Door, I'm reminded how great it is to eat at a restaurant where the food and value are both great!6/3/2013 12:00:00 AMA Boppin Place! My wife had been here twice before, me never. She loved the food! We made a reservation and we were immediately shown to our table when we arrived on time. This is a major deal for me when you are forced to wait. Our server came right over and she was great! This restaurant is definitely energetic! You would not come here for an intimate dinner for two. Having the said that the overall experience was great. The menu was daunting for me but the rest of our group loved it. All in all I would go back when I wanted a fun, noisy night out.6/2/2013 12:00:00 AMService would have been ratedService would have been rated "Very Good" if only the serving staff were considered. The Hostess/Greeter was brusque and seemingly far too busy/interested in phone reservations than in checking us in and getting us seated which created a very "rushed" feeling as we were hurried off to our table.6/2/2013 12:00:00 AMThe BestIf you want creative, fresh and delicious Vietnamese food, Slanted door is the place for you.
We loveiore, each time we go.6/2/2013 12:00:00 AMI love the buzz in this restaurant,I love the buzz in this restaurant, the views are also fabulous if you get a window table. I definitely would return to try more dishes. The lettuce wrap with the chicken was excellent and so was the dikon rice cakes. Service was quick and friendly.,6/1/2013 12:00:00 AMMy favoriteWhenever I go to San Francisco I go here. The food is consistently good and imaginative. The problem
is always getting reservations. The first time I had lunch here I wanted to sit outside and watch the ferries
go back and forth until it was time for dinner, unfortunately, the place was fully booked.5/31/2013 12:00:00 AMSlanted Door - girlfriend reunionFood was exquisite - delicious and well presented. Scallops, stir fried chicken and rice cakes were standouts. Service was attentive and very helpful in menu and ordering recommendations. ights of the bay bridge was an extra treat that added to a special evening. Wine list was eclectic - since we did not recognize anything we did not order wine, but did enjoy the MaiTais!! Highly recommend and hope to go tere again soon.5/31/2013 12:00:00 AMStellar_Everything!!!Fifth time here. S.D. Never ceases to amaze us. Fantastic service. Delish apps & entrees. As far as the service, had excellent results with one server in particular who knew wine like know one's business. Recommend reservations early! N-joy!
Cheers,
Arro5/30/2013 12:00:00 AMWow!Here from the UK on holiday and made a reservation before we flew over. The restaurant was packed on a Thursday night and we had a window table with the best view of the Bay Bridge light show. We had never had Vietnamese food before and this was exceptional food. For appetisers we had ceviche of scallop and (I think) halibut, and beef carpaccio with peanuts, neither of these seemed particularly eastern but who cares for ingredients of this quality. Then we shared the shaking beef, caramelised shrimp, and bok Choy, with steamed rice. I would have liked to try the cool looking candy floss dessert but too full! Probably not the best place for a romantic meal (we had two med students sat next to us discussing knee surgery in graphic detail).5/30/2013 12:00:00 AMWhat a destination! After a visit to the new Exploratorium we celebrated a friend's birthday at the Slanted Door. Five friends shared delicious dishes which the friendly waitress helped us choose and showed us how to make wraps of lettuce with goodies inside. Two of the ladies wear hearing aides so it was quite noisy in the center of the room so they let us move to a corner in the back where it was much quieter. The Birthday person was presented a cloud of cotton candy with a candle in it! We hopped back on the ferry and returned to Marin.5/29/2013 12:00:00 AMBay Bridge Light ShowFriends were in town and wanted to see the Bay Bridge Light show. We booked a table at Slanted door and were lucky enough to get a table at the window with a perfect view. Started at the bar with a glass of wine waiting for our table. The service is perfect with the transition from bar to dinner table. No need to hurry and pay the bar bill it is transferred seamlessly. We weren't familiar with the wines on the list so the sommalier helped us select a wine. Great wine and enjoyed his explanation of wine choices. The food was amazing. Shared oysters, spring rolls the clay pot chicken and short ribs. All excellent. Topped it off with the cotton candy - a dessert to behold. Great service, food and fun!5/29/2013 12:00:00 AMGreat experienceMy husband and went our first night in San Francisco, it was a Wednesday . It was very busy, obviously very popular. It was a bit loud but full of energy. The staff was tremendous helping us find gluten free options for my husband. We had multiple appetizers and soup and shared a salmon entree. All of the food was fabulous, wonderful flavors. The fried spring rolls, and carpaccio were our favorite appetizers. The salmon was in a broth full of flavors we loved. The slanted door spring rolls were our least favorite item . Highly recommend, also great view of bay bridge , right on water.5/29/2013 12:00:00 AMHome cooked Flavors/fancy placeThird time at slanted door....I come here everytime I visit San Francisco. Location at ferry building is great and views are beautiful, especially since they've adorned the bay bridge with lights.
Typically service is great here but this time we had a long wait for service. Our reservation was at 9:15pm since we were just arriving from our flight and so they weren't as busy as they usually are. Seated right away but server didn't come over until maybe 7 minutes later. Service was fine when she was there but she was mostly MIA. When it was time to pay, even that took long, as I could see our sever chatting with the front desk. No big deal, still had a good time and probably server was having a rough day since it was the end of the night.5/29/2013 12:00:00 AMGreat Vietnamese FoodWe've eaten here often and have never been disappointed. Our Open Table reservation this time included a request for a window table and it was granted. Our server (Rebecca) was pleasant and engaging and voiced her dish preferences when asked.5/27/2013 12:00:00 AMTouristyThis used to be a special dining destination. Menu remains mostly the same, but the ambience has gotten so casual with tourists wearing sweatshirts: "I went to Fisherman's Wharf but all I got was crabs..." kind of attire. Took a bit of time for the food to come, but it was still tasty.5/27/2013 12:00:00 AMLOUD and Impersonal. Great FoodSo, I'll start by saying that the food was great. Not amazing, but great. The crab and asparagus soup was really my favorite item of the evening.
We had to ASK the host to check our reservation when we walked in as he was sitting, reading a book, and didn't give us a second look. Keep in mind this was 7pm on Memorial Day, so it was busy.
The tables are too close together. The waiter wasn't personable at all. We spent $250 for dinner and drinks for 4, which was expected.
The noise level was a bit more than energetic, we had to raise our voices to hear one another.
Overall, good food, but probably wouldn't choose to eat here again. We can find much better ambiance and similar quality food elsewhere.5/27/2013 12:00:00 AMMy love for the Door grows!Another fantastic meal at the Slanted Door. This time, we were meeting a friend for lunch, and she got lost on the way up from San Jose. I didn't realize she was running late until we were already seated, but the staff was totally cool about it (probably helped that we ordered bubbles and oysters, but still, they were incredibly gracious about the whole thing, which is unusual for such a busy restaurant...). Everything we ate was just grand, and the wines - well, they've managed to pick a whole host of wines tht match up with with Charlie Phan's Vietnamese food. We will be back, again and again.5/26/2013 12:00:00 AMNew light show on Bay BridgeNew light show on Bay Bridge awesome. Getting a cab after dinner is a royal pain. Standard cab pain in San Francisco. Plan on using MUNI public transportation.5/26/2013 12:00:00 AMVietnamese dining experienceThis was our first experience with a Vietnamese menu and the Slanted Door did not disappoint. The server was very kind and patient with us explaining the menu and making suggestions regarding our choices and the amount of food. This was very much appreciated considering the restaurant was very busy, but we did not feel rushed or that our questions an inconvenience. The food was extremely flavourful. We especially loved the crispy imperial rolls and the caramelized shrimp. The fabulous view of the Bay Bridge with it's evening light display was an added bonus. If I lived in San Francisco as I would return here again and again!!5/26/2013 12:00:00 AMcwluvsthecityFood delicious. 35dollar cork fee outrageous. Doesn't cost restaurant a dime and definitely will discourage from a return visit. Slanted door5/25/2013 12:00:00 AMSlanted Door Did Not Disappoint!Given that this restaurant has been talked about for many, many years as a top place for asian
cuisine foodies, I wondered if visiting so many years after its opening, it was still delivering a top
notch food expereince. I would have to say yes. The Slanted Doors menu is full of exceptional dishes with the freshest of ingredients. The food is complemented by a wonderful wine list developed to complement asian food. One complaint---the place is too noisy. Kitchen clatter, tooo many table perhaps, waiter and busboy movement, close tables, and noise from the market on the other side of the wall, make this a noisy place to dine during the day. Not sure if it changes much at night.5/25/2013 12:00:00 AMAs Advertized---Great!We took an out of town couple to the Farmers' Market followed by lunch at the Slanted Door. A couple of friends expressed envy when we told them we were going to the Slanted Door. It has a well deserved reputation as one of the best restaurants in San Francisco. Reservation was right on time (no waiting) (and necessary, the place was packed!). We had a booth (better view) and service staff was courteous and efficient. We had several appetizers as well as three main courses. We passed on desert (too full). All and all it was an excellent experience. Our out of towners were impressed with the restaurant for both its food and location. Highly recommend the Slanted Door for superlative San Francisco dining.5/25/2013 12:00:00 AMFabulous meal -as always! What a great way to celebrate my daughter's college graduation - fresh, fabulous, innovative food; dynamite service; great view! Thanks Slanted Door- you have been a great part of our enjoyment in my daughter's college experience. We try to dine here whenever I come in from the East coast and you never fail to amaze us! The cookbook is now a part of our library for my two foodie daughters - 1 a CIA trained chef and 1 a vegetarian healthy diet food blogger! Thanks again!5/24/2013 12:00:00 AMFantasticVery delightfull place!
Exotic food with unique taste!5/23/2013 12:00:00 AMAwesome!2nd time here and still loved it as much as the first! Had the yellowtail appetizer with crispy shallots a, cellophane noodles with crab, and coconut banana line sorbet which were all outstanding!5/23/2013 12:00:00 AMWe are never disappointedWe are never disappointed with this restaurant. The drinks are fun and creative. The wine list interesting and pairs beautifully with the food. The food is delicious and varied and unique. Our server was an absolute delight, even comping us the perfect vegetable dish to go with our meal. The noise level is high so I wouldn't recommend it for a romantic night out but other than that.5/22/2013 12:00:00 AMdinner reviewthis is my third time at this restaurant last two times food
Outstanding this last time was not may have
been my choices would still return great wine list and wine was
Superb5/21/2013 12:00:00 AMAlways funReservation is highly recommended
The cellophane noodles w crab are my favorite!
Also the jasmine tea is served in a wine glass where you can see the flower blossom
The whole fish we chose was the Bronzino and it was excellent
We could see the light show on Bay Bridge from our table.5/20/2013 12:00:00 AMA Banquet! On Monday we converted to the prix fixe menu for a party of seven. We had more than enough food- all of it delicious. The menu is wide, varied, and beautifully presented. We are a complicated group including vegetarians, allergies, and varied taste preferences. And, there was more than one something for everyone. My out of town company was impressed with the food and service- and she is a true foodie.5/20/2013 12:00:00 AMGreat food, slow serviceI was part of a group business lunch that started at 1 pm on a weekday. We were seated promptly but it took long time to get our order, and when we were done, a long time to get our check. The food was very good, as always, and the servers were friendly. By the time we arrived there were several empty tables, so it's unclear why service was slow.5/20/2013 12:00:00 AMTerribly noisy.
Food has comeTerribly noisy.
Food has come down in quality since the last time I was there. Maybe the success has been too much.5/19/2013 12:00:00 AMAN AMAZING VIEW!I was seated looking out from Pier One at San Francisco's Embarcadero area. The Bay Bridge has newly installed LED lights on each cable, which go on and off to create moving patterns on the bridge which was amazing! The food was my first introduction to Vietnamese cooking. I had yellowtail sashimi appetizer, Imperial roll, and banana-leaf wrapped dumplings. Being familiar with sushi, it was easy to enjoy the sashimi (great spicy sauce), and the Imperial roll (a cut roll which they served with lettuce leaves and sauce to create "hand rolls". The dumpling was a little more of an adventure, and tasted more like chewy dough with a little garnish on the top. Excellent wine selections-I had a white burgundy for the firs time, and loved it!5/19/2013 12:00:00 AM
