Skool restaurant is a fish-focused restaurant with Japanese flair. We are committed to serving the freshest dishes with special attention to local, sustainable and seasonal ingredients. Skool in located in sunny Potrero Hill and has a warm and welcoming large private patio. Skool's full bar serves up great artisan and seasonal cocktails in addition to beer, wine, sake and much more.
Skool serves lunch, dinner and brunch. Skool also has 'Detention Hall’ our version of Happy Hour at our bar and patio. Come be a part of our Skool at the corner of Alameda and De Haro in the Design District of Potrero Hill.

  • "This place was a hit. I would say I had a similar experience with Saison in terms of refined dishes. As I am Japanese from Japan, I could tell they used the ingredients only Japanese chef would use, like Nikki (Japanese cinnamon) in the Coconut milk panna cotta. The ambiance was good. Although I was surprised by some groups who brought their infants. Luckily they didn't cry to break the mood. The location was actually a little sketchy, yet easy to park."

  • "We were renting an apartment for a few days in San Francisco and the owner recommended Skool. At night it did not look like an area where there was much going on, but we were delighted with the whole experience. The food is Japanese inspired, light and delicious. We would recommend this venue to anyone."

  • "The food was very good and the kitchen takes food allergies, restrictions, sensitivities very seriously and goes out of the way to make tasty substitutions. I think the server could have been friendlier. My 3 year old son was with our group and I needed to order something additional for him as well as ask for smaller cutlery so I waited and then finally went to the register to put in the extra order (was able to find smaller forks and spoons myself). She acknowledged my request but wasn't very friendly about it."

  • "The outdoor area is amazing!! The food was ok. Maybe I just ordered wrong, I had the steak and frittes. It just wasn't what I expected. A friend of mine had the salmon eggs Benedict and it was a little salty. The other two had the jerk chicken and waffles and that was Delish. All and all I would def go again. The sangria really hit the spot!"

  • "Was recommended by a friend and went on a Friday night for dinner. Seems more of a bar than a dining place. The bar was really crowded and there is no partition or separation from the dining area from the bar. Despite the dining room being virtually empty we were seated next to the bar area. Our table was continuously bumped by the people coming and going from the bar. The dining room is all hard surfaces without any table clothes so is really really loud. If you want to go someplace and don't want to have to talk to your companion this is a good choice. You can't hear anything. Ordered cocktails, one was a cosmopolitan and they made it with grenadine instead of cranberry. Food was just ok, fish was very oily. Would not recommend."

  • "Japanese food meets Cali cuisine, who knew this could work AND be soo good?! I highly recommend it. Went with two girlfriends and would have sat outside if the weather was nicer. The squid ink noodles with seafood was delicious, as was crab spread and risotto. Excellent flavor all around, I will go back!"

  • "I love this restaurant, normally. Over the years of my custom they have consistently delivered with quality food and attention. However the last two visits have been poor. Last visit they got my flatbread order wrong, i waited 5 minutes then a different server brought the same wrong order back, and by the time i got the right order, everyone else was almost finished eating. Also on this visit I watched the wait staff stand in the kitchen area folding napkins when there were clearly customers who were looking for attention, including our table. Snap out of it Skool, i don't want to put you in detention, but it's looking likely."

  • "The menu looked interesting and we managed to make a booking on Opentable for a Friday evening, that was a good start. We tried a few cocktails at the bar before the hostess requested that we adjourn to the table so that we wouldn't hold up her seating plans. Well, she didn't exactly say that but the hint was not lost. It was nice of her to offer alternative seats at the bar. We started with fresh oysters and deviled eggs. The Chef's selection of oysters were really good! We finally decided to share four of the appetizers- Fish Sampler and Uni Flan were the best! The fried Baby Eryngii was a great alternative to regular fries. The dessert, however, was forgettable. Will we go back? Definitely! We haven't even started on the entrees!"

  • "The food was tasty. We enjoyed the sake offerings with our meal. The prix fixe menu of hamachi was perfect followed by the striped sea bass with crunchy, fatty skin. The lentils were a bit al dente to me with a tangy sauce that didn't pair as well as it could have. The mussels were tasty, but very gritty. I had to stop eating them because I kept finding pebbles and sand. Quite awful. And I love mussels. The desserts was just vanilla ice cream with a drizzle of caramel sauce. Nothing to write home about. I would only eat fish here as that seems to be their specialty."

The Butterfish and the squid ink spagatina were some of the highlights, the uni flam was great but might not be for everyone it's very rich, but if you love uni try it. I'm a sucker for anything with an egg on it, the Salmon didn't disappoint, cook perfectly and also a surprising amount of food (you actually get what you pay for)."

  • "The food was not as good as the picture looks on their page. Alot of the stuff that looks good was not offered that day. We booked a party of 8 and was 20 min early, there where open tables but we still had to wait. There is a 20% tip already charged for our party. I service was not as I expect for a 20% service fee. One of our order came out wrong. We order shrimp and got fish. The buser spill water all over our table and took our plates away and never replaced it till we ask. Knowing we where going to shear everything, no one care to bring use so bows or plates. The portions are small."

  • "The New Year's Eve prefix dinner was excellent. 4 courses, each paired with a wine selection at a very reasonable price. Not overbooked, so table ready at the reservation time. The wait staff has been well trained, so service and knowledge adds to your enjoyment. Elegant food and presentation in a modern inviting atmosphere. Although parking is difficult at lunchtime, it's always available in the evening."

  • "Skool has seemed a little mysterious to me since a co-worker told me about it. Maybe because the restaurant is sort of hiding in plain sight. On 12/4/13 I came with 5 co-workers for lunch to celebrate 2 birthdays. We were all amazed at how attractive Skool is once you are inside. There were several other groups at tables there but our table was great (inside, too cold to eat outside right now). Our server was friendly, knowledgeable and attentive. It is a little noisy in the restaurant so it was sometimes hard to hear her. Service all around was excellent though. Not at all intrusive and fast. The food was delicious. We all had a different entrée, everyone raved about their meal! I will be back soon for cocktails!"

  • "Skool is a top pick for me since I work nearby. It was nice to see their new Winter menu. Plenty of delicious and inventive selections. I had the seared Alaskan cod, crispy on top and just velvet in my mouth, with a pile of a nicely seasoned kale/mushroom blend plus the eggplant with miso peanut sauce. My two (minor) complaints are if you sit at the tables the Detention Hall Happy hour prices for drinks do not apply nor is there the nibble menu for starters. Finally, I requested to be seated away from the doors whish they did, but right next to the window on a very chilly night, although there were plenty of other tables available. I was freezing, despite ordering hot Sake. I will be back soon for the Uni flan!!"

  • "The menu was a little more eclectic with things like pickled sardines (Excellent) The beef shoulder (Pot Roast) was awesome and there was something for everyone. It was not overly expensive. The menu was a little restrictive if you are not very adventurous so its a little more for foodies."

  • "Food at Skool is good but getting to your food is a different story. We made reservations for a party of 3 at 1:30 pm. Not at a lunch time rush. Got to the restaurant and the hostess on the phone so we waited. No problem there. Told us she will be with us. Ok not a problem. She went to serve food to the tables near by cuz their food were on the counter. Ok now I have a problem. A hostess playing a waiter is a problem cuz I am standing at the door. Hostess comes back and tells us there's a table being clean but it only fits two."

  • "I had a last minute client from out of town, and in spite of the fact that the kitchen was about to close five minutes after I walked in, the staff was very kind and accommodating. I was able to order some outstanding food and impress my client. We split both the ink squid spaghettini, which were most amazing, and unexpectedly came in a broth, and an eclectic Nicoise salad, with lightly seared tuna. The wine list was very fine, as was my cocktail, a Fortaleza, tomato water and basil concoction. The espresso was the right size, and the lunch was a total success. I will be back."
