We took 3 family members to Skates on the bay in Berkeley late October. The food was poor quality, and the service was terrible! The server was inattentive and scarce. Our bill at the end of the evening was over $300, which would have been fair, had the food been tasty and service good

You come here to relax and enjoy the view of the bay. We went on a sunny, beautiful Sunday and it was just perfect. I wish I could say the same for the service. Slow and careless, but if could just be that particular service staff. Food was good but not outstanding. Overall, worth an occasional visit if only for the view (but make sure you get a window table).

We were celebrating our wedding anniversary. We ordered an appetizer and after enjoying our cocktail, we ordered dinner. We received our salad before our appetizer. When our dinners arrived, they were barely warm and not cooked the way we requested. Even the plate presentation left a lot to be desired.

Happened on this restaurant because we were staying at the Doubletree. Knew we were going to like it as soon as we walked in. The energy in the room and the way the layout of the bar and restaurant was so eye appealing. Our view of the Golden Gate and Bay Bridge into San Francisco was breathtaking. Drinks were very good and staff all were friendly and efficient. The food was excellent. Would definitely come back and try the sushi and eat in the bar next time. It was very generous to offer us a sample of a wine that complimented our meal. It was a great experience for the prelude to our Jimmy Buffett concert!!

The restuarant was nice, the service was great! But we were very dissapointed because we had reservations at 4:30 for a table by a window and once we got there, we were told we would have to wait at least another 30 minutes. I don't think we will go back again. What good are resevations if you still have to wait?

We met our newlywed niece and her husband here for a special dinner. The service was friendly but sporadic. The food was overpriced and under delivered. I ordered the seafood Gnocchi which allegedly contained Lobster. It was also served with 1 tiny crab leg for ~ $30.00. A huge disappointment. I ordered a mixed green salad to start. It looked like someone dumped 1/2 of a box of mixed greens on a plate and drowned it vinaigrette. There was way to much of it and way too little in terms of preparation. The dessert was a highlight - pear bread pudding with ice cream. This was the only course that delivered. Did I mention the view? Fantastic!

I brought some out-of-town guests who had not been here before. I had not been here for quite awhile, but it is one of the very few restaurants in Berkeley with a nice view. The table was a window table, so that was as I had requested, although I don't know that they honored my request, or if it was just simply available, since there were several more also empty. The waitress was good, but not terribly attentive. However it was getting busy, so that could be somewhat excused. The menu was limited and the food was just okay, nothing remarkable. It was definitely not as I remembered from previous visits, although it has been quite awhile, but it used to be one of my favorites. I would come again, but keep in mind that it isn't great.

Scheduled a business lunch meeting, and requested quiet window seating. The soup/salad or sandwich combo was wonderful, and the service was quick. The crab/artichoke melt sandwich was decadent and the clam chowder was good. The french onion soup was very heavy with cheese. The hamburger was tasty, and the crisp fries that came with the burger and crab melt was terrific. Would definitely come back with the family.

My wife and I have eaten at Skates dozens of times. Ray, a former waiter of ours at another location, became one of the manangers, so we'd stop to say hi and eat. This past weekend was very disappointing. I have the Tillamook cheddar cheese and ham omelettte - it had no Tiallamook chesee - something white and gooey. My wifes eggs florentine had an english muffin that was as hard as a rock. We did not get our usual bay side table instead seated as far back as possible. We are in our late 60's and were very disappointed.

I have been going to Skates for years for the view and for a convenient meeting place for East and North Bay friends. They continue to increase prices for average to poor food. This time it was terrible. The calamari was like the left over crispies on the bottom of a pan with no taste of calamari in them whatsoever. I was with a group I only see once a year so didn't want to make a scene or spoil the mood so didn't send it back. I wanted my friend who was visiting from Ohio to see the view and the setting, otherwise I learned it is not worth coming back.

First.. although I had requested a window seat when I made my reservations, I did wait in the bar until a table came open... who knew you could not reserve the window at the same time. Bartenders knew how to make a proper martini. I started with the frito mist.. really good... wow! I had the best waitress and she was fabulous and steered me to a steak and seafood combo since I missed the dates for the surf and turf special. I went with recommendations for mashed potatoes, filet mignon, asparagus crab combo and the sauce on the side. The peach cobbler was not up to par (4 stars for dessert) Chefs! Make sure they peaches are ripe and sweet or if green as these were, cook longer with added sugar.

Enjoyed the view and cocktails. The food was good, but the dishes were luke-warm when they arrived. Our waiter was attentive but new, and got a little distracted when things got busy. Took awhile for wine to arrive with the entre. Overall, a good experience. Still one of my favorite restaurants in the bay area. I have to complain about the prices a little, almost $200 for a dinner for two hurts. Two cocktails and two glasses of wine for $50, ouch.

Breathtakingly beautiful view. The food was equally spectacular. A comfortable, upscale spot. Mix of dressy, 'date night' couples and families with kids. Carpeted and quite. Friendly, attentive, non-intrusive wait staff in bar and dining room. Host/ Hostess equally attentive and accommodating. Appetizer: Crab Artichoke Dip, seriously rich and delicious. Main courses: Seared Scallops (her) and Cioppino (me). Beautiful presentation both. The one bite of Scallop I got was delicious. Perfectly, melt-in-your-mouth prepared. The Cioppino was excellent: generous with ingredients. Tons of crab! All excellent. Good selection of by the glass wines. House made desserts: Key Lime Pie (me) Peach Cobbler (her). Again, both excellent.

We had reservation for 8 at 8pm on a friday. We arrived about 10 mins before 8. We were warmly greeted, the hostess inform us there will be about 15 min wait because the table we were to be seated at was by the window and currently occupied but had a back up table if we decided not to wait. We were okay with the backup table and decided not to wait. Long story short, The food was excellent and came to us in a timily manner...given it was a packed house, so we didnt mind the wait. Service was also good but the only problem I had was that the gentlemen that served us... I understand that it was extremely busy and slip his mind and forgotten to refill our drinks but we were thirsty. Haha but service was great overall.
