I was there for brunch; unfortunately they did not have the crepes, which was what I really wanted to try. So I settled for a shrimp and avocado quesadilla which was excellent. (I also shared 3 blueberry pancakes which were also excellent.) The breakfast breads were wonderful the coffee cake was especially excellent!

The food was very good, although the teriyaki sauce was very salty. However, we made 6:30 reservations and were not seated until after 7:00 and then had a somewhat odd and unattentive server. Overall, however, the evening was good.

Our table was wonderful with a veiw. We ordered appetizers and 30 minutes later they still had not arrived. Our food server who was great told us she was sorry and that she would not charge us for apps or dessert. We still got charged for dessert. It was not her fault but annoying. The view is fabulous and the food was OK not great but adequate. They had beignets on the menu for dessert. They were fried but without any real flavor. The creme bulee or something like that was excellent.

Skates on the Bay was one of my favorite restaurants in the Berkeley/East Bay area. However, after having Brunch there on Saturday I probably won't be going back for a while. The food was not as wonderful as I remembered it to be. In fact my steak salad was boring. It was a whole lot of lettuce and a little bit of steak. I also thought that it was a little pricey for Brunch, or tab came to $80.00 for 3 people. The restaurant is showing signs of wear and tear as well. I am so disappointed hopefully Skates will make some improvements. It would be a shame if they don't preserve this special restaurant.

Wonderful restaurant with unbelievable views. The only knock on the place is that we felt a bit rushed through the meal. The entrees arrived only shortly after we had received our salads and soups. None of us were finished and had to move the soup/salad aside and start on the main course. Other than that, a fantastic dinner experience!

The location and food was good, but it was unfortunately very crowded that night. It also did not help that we felt rushed to leave - the waiters were extremely slow in serving us, rarely checked up on us (so we had try for some time to catch someone's eye just to get more water), but were very quick to give us the check and put a "Reserved" sign on the table for the next group before we had even finished eating. Nice restaurant, but would probably want to come when there are far fewer people for better service.

I requested a window seat when I made the reservations. I called two times to confirm the importance of not being in the upper level. I had to make a fuss becausde they had us at the back of the restaurant. The manager stepped in and gave us the table we requested. The food was very mediocre. We exchanged the view for average food but the food was not even close to being good. The blinds were down the entire time so the bartenders would not get sun in their eyes. What about the customer? The cesar was soggy, the fish dish had no flavor, the scallops were breaded and fried which was not indicated on the menu. It was an overall disappointment. We have frequented Skates for many years for special occasions and this was our last time.

    OpenTable Diner Since 2008
    Dined on 5/7/2008
The only thing I really did not like about Skates was overly loud, taped jazz music which was irritating. It was a bit hard to talk and listen, which is the point (besides the food). After 2 hours, I had a headache. It was the wrong music for the afternoon and too loud. The food and service were very good, and you have a beautiful view of the bay, which should create a relaxed mood. The music was not in sync with the view of the bay. Music at night is more appropriate, but even then, if it is so loud that conversation takes too much effort, then it takes away from the atmosphere, rather than enhances it.

My husband is very allergic to nuts and we found almonds in his asparagus, although nuts were not mentioned in the menu description. The eggplant dish was a bit too vinegary and the flavors over-powering. However, the appetizers (Warm Brie with Macadamia Nut Crust for me and Teriyaki Tenderloin for him) were fantastic. Despite the main course issues, the atmosphere, cocktails and appetizers were great, which is why we enjoy and return to Skates.

We went for our anniversary and the staff made an extra effort to make our night special. Unfortunately, one of the dishes we ordered was not up to par, and we had to wait for a second dish to be prepared. We do not usually send food back, but this piece of kobe beef was so chewy and difficult to cut, the server recognized immediately that it was a problem and offered to take it back. The second dish was much better, and we did enjoy the evening, overall. We have been going to Skates for almost twenty years, and we will definitely go back in the future :-)
