  • "We very much enjoyed our evening out. The food was very good, the service attentive but not bothersome. And, the view from the large windows is outstanding. Skates draws an interesting crowd."

  • "When I decided to have my birthday dinner in Berkeley with my family I didn't know where to go. I used Yelp reviews and found Skates on the Bay. The reviews were positive. Made my reservation for 4 people for 6:15 dinner thru Open Table. There are plenty of parking. The view was grand with the Bay Bridge and the Golden Gate Bridge on the background. Server was friendly and took time to explain the menu. The food were appetizing to the eyes and delicious to the palate. Love the scallops that I ordered, so soft! Yes, it is pricey but worth your money. The manager even came to our table and introduced himself. I find that gesture to be welcoming. The only thing we didn't get to sit by the window. I will come back!"

  • "If you're craving seafood, this thee place. Raw oysters, lobster, crab, sushi! So Ono!!"

  • "Welcoming when we arrived, our waiter was outstanding, Food was excellent. The only thing dissatisfy was we have a coupon and restaurant policy required the manager come to our table to take care of our bill, we had waited over 20 minutes for her to show-up."

  • "Everyone was friendly from the moment we entered the door. KUDOS to our waiter who was very patient with us. He recommended two dishes and to our amazement they were delicious! The atmosphere was welcoming and the view breath taking. Thanks Skates on the Bay for making my Birthday special. We will definitely return again for more tasty meals and mouth watering desserts!!"

  • "Although I miss the old wood-tone ambiance of Skates (gray just doesn't do it for me) I always love the view and the good food. I think the dish I got, though (assorted crab and shellfish in tomato sauce), would have been much easier to eat and less messy if the crab had been cracked or even removed from the shell. Or you could change the sauce to a white-wine and garlic or something less messy on the hands. I did especially appreciate being able to order a 3-oz. glass of wine. Also the noise level was a bit loud for two people who use hearing aids. Otherwise, a very enjoyable evening and we will be back."

  • "Great for out of town guests. Fabulous view, good food, though pricey! Perfect for special occasions."

  • "Skates has one of the best views around. The service is excellent. The pasta I ordered however the fettucini was undercooked and stuck together. The fish and chips the batter was not crispy it was mushy so I didn't even eat it and the coleslaw that accompanied it was just shredded red cabbage. The French fries were good though."

  • " Although I usually dine at small, chef owned establishments, Skates on the Bay is one of those places that is just perfect to meet up with friends driving from various California locations. With a window seat, diners enjoy waves lapping under the restaurant. The service is great and the fish is fresh and tasty. Our party of four met for lunch and we truly enjoyed the seafood louie piled high with crab and shrimp with asparagus on the side plus a salmon burger. We splurged on dessert and definitely recommend the key lime pie and the scrumptious peach cobbler. Both tasted homemade. I’ve been here many times and have never been disappointed. It’s a large restaurant with a big bar and service that is top notch."

  • "We dine at Skates at least annually. We were here to celibrate our 19th wedding anniversary. I proposed to my wife 20 years ago at the table in the corner over the water. It's our favorite restaurant. The fish is always great. We stay at the marina hotel for the weekend."

  • "We have an annual gathering and after trying different venues, we have decided Skates is the best. It is centrally located for our group who come from the North, East and South. It has a fabulous view for any table in the house. The food is great and varied enough for everyone. The place is open throughout the day, so it can accommodate odd times. When the group continued to vote for Skates, we decided to simply just do our annual gathering there."

  • "Skates on the Bay offers a spectacular view of SF Bay -- sailboats, rowers, geese, the Bay bridges. The fish offerings were very, very good, as were the accompaniments. The waiter and wine stewardess were particularly helpful. The restaurant can be somewhat noisy."

  • "The place has a beautiful view of the city. The restaurant had a bunch flies at the entrance. The food took a loooong time to arrive. We continuously had to remind the waiter about our orders; however, the staff was extremely courteous and friendly. If I return it means that I was around the area, but never will drive with the purpose of eating there."

  • "Great location but has only average food, perhaps a good place for a drink with a view. Food was not bad but would not recommend it for the price. I had sushi which was very average and my guest had the special sliders which were not so great. We loved the location and view"

  • " My daughter and her boyfriend thought this would be the perfect place to take me as I love lobster and a view of the water. The view was lovely and so was the restaurant, but the food was cold, a pet peiv of mine. Cold mash potatoes and lobster, not good. Oh they did finally come to see how things were and reheated my food, but this is not a inexpensive restaurant and for me it was ruined. I did not share my disappointment with my daughter but Im in no hurry to return to this establishment ."

  • "We have been dining here for quite a few years and the bread was always great! When they took away the bread and brought in the sushi bar it was not a welcome change. But, apparently they listened to their customers because the bread is back! Oh, we know it's not baked in their ovens but it was still delicious and just great that it was back!"

  • "The views are spectacular. The food was good. I had the Halibit Cheeks - they were pretty good if a bit stringy. It was more about the views than the food, really. The service was very good but that probably had something to do with my spectacularly beautiful daughter than anything else. :)"

  • "First I must say I have been eating at Skates for at least 15 years and have always had great food and great service, But on Sunday the 29th of June when we went for Brunch I found a complete downfall in the food quality and service. I ordered the Ham Omelette, it came sitting on a plate with a bunch of dried out, cold potatoe squares, that were unseasoned and nothing else...Very visually unappealing and the spud squares were tasteless..My date had Eggs Benedict,, 2 Crab Cakes with 2 unappealing sorta/kinda cooked eggs on top with a tablespoon or so of sauce smeared on top and the same Spud Squares that I had. No Garnish, No nothing..I think there may have been a lone Strawbeery sitting forlornly on the plate. The Server forgot our bread.."

  • "Food was great and so was the service. We had a window looking towards the Golden Gate Bridge. When the sun set the sunset was outstanding. We live ninety miles from this restaurant in the valley. My wife loves this restaurant for dinner and special occasion"

  • "When I have friends visiting from out of town, if they like seafood I always take them to Skates. There's a very good, reasonably priced raw bar as well as a small selection of classic seafood dishes. Otherwise, the menu is skimpy. Decent wine selection and full bar. The main reason to dine at Skates isn't the food, but the fabulous views across San Francisco Bay to the City and Marin County. Best, therefore, on a sunny day."

  • "We came to celebrate 2 College graduations. The service was really poor and all the staff seem to hate their jobs, hardly a smile to be found. When our dinner arrived, we had to flag down a busboy and ask to have all the empty cocktail glasses and appetizer plates removed. The food was bland, which unfortunately is something to expect from places with such a great view, and it all came at room temp. Also, why bother to ask if it is a special occasion when you book the table (and when we checked in at reception, and by the waitress), if they are not going to do anything. I might go back because of the location, but only for drinks and an appetizer. Definitely not worth the over $200 spent."

  • "Tawnya Taylor-Michel, the general manager, has done a stellar job at resurrecting Skates On The Bay into a renaissance monument with the best view anywhere in the Bay Area. Although the formal entrees are not reasonably priced, the selections are tasteful. A reservation through Open Table the same day gets you a window seat, even on a weekend evening. My roommate and I (both on a budget) opted for the sushi: the California Roll for him and the Rainbow Roll for me, more elaborately presented with large pieces like technicolor art work, followed by a special peach cobbler and a New York Cheesecake for my roommate who had never experienced such a piece of Americana since he left Seoul in the Republic of Korea as a trained chef!"

  • "My family and I usually go to Skates for special occasions or just for a change of scenery. We went to Skates on this date to celebrate our wedding anniversary. The service was excellent. The food was good, but not "great" as I've had in the passed. This will continue to be a favorite of ours."

  • "view was gorgeous being on the bay, the food was delicious with ample portions, our waitress was wonderful. It was a fine dining experience well worth the price of the ticket. A must if you are in the area."

  • "Skates on the Bay has an incredible view of the bay, and that's really its main claim to fame. The food is good, but over-priced. You can get a much better meal for less elsewhere. But for a special occasion where you're willing to open your wallet for the "wow" factor of the view, it's a fun option."
