I'd had a lunch at Skates before this dinner. I really like the food and the beautiful window scene. When my friend told me she would come here and ask me recommend a restaurant, I mentioned Skates. We spent a wonderful night here, everything was awesome!

My husband and I booked our reservation for our special anniversary through Open Table. The hostess and waiter were alert to our special requests. Perfect service! I enjoyed my scallops. My husband didn't like the kim chee in his short ribs. The view of the sunset over the bay doesn't get better than it is here!

Enjoyed the view and cocktails. The food was good, but the dishes were luke-warm when they arrived. Our waiter was attentive but new, and got a little distracted when things got busy. Took awhile for wine to arrive with the entre. Overall, a good experience. Still one of my favorite restaurants in the bay area. I have to complain about the prices a little, almost $200 for a dinner for two hurts. Two cocktails and two glasses of wine for $50, ouch.

Breathtakingly beautiful view. The food was equally spectacular. A comfortable, upscale spot. Mix of dressy, 'date night' couples and families with kids. Carpeted and quite. Friendly, attentive, non-intrusive wait staff in bar and dining room. Host/ Hostess equally attentive and accommodating. Appetizer: Crab Artichoke Dip, seriously rich and delicious. Main courses: Seared Scallops (her) and Cioppino (me). Beautiful presentation both. The one bite of Scallop I got was delicious. Perfectly, melt-in-your-mouth prepared. The Cioppino was excellent: generous with ingredients. Tons of crab! All excellent. Good selection of by the glass wines. House made desserts: Key Lime Pie (me) Peach Cobbler (her). Again, both excellent.

We had reservation for 8 at 8pm on a friday. We arrived about 10 mins before 8. We were warmly greeted, the hostess inform us there will be about 15 min wait because the table we were to be seated at was by the window and currently occupied but had a back up table if we decided not to wait. We were okay with the backup table and decided not to wait. Long story short, The food was excellent and came to us in a timily manner...given it was a packed house, so we didnt mind the wait. Service was also good but the only problem I had was that the gentlemen that served us... I understand that it was extremely busy and slip his mind and forgotten to refill our drinks but we were thirsty. Haha but service was great overall.

The only complaint we have was that the server was a bit rude, although knowledgeable. All the other servers we had before were really nice, courteous and sometimes funny. This girl was a little defensive about any question or simple request we would make. Other than that, food was yummy as always.

This was our second visit to Skates, both to celebrate our wedding anniversary. On our first visit we made a reservation, and we were surprised to see a small note at our table congratulating us on the anniversary and we received a nice dessert. This time, there was no acknowledgement of our special occasion, which was disappointing. The room was full, as would be expected in a location with a nice over water view, so the noise level was a bit elevated, but not bad for the amount of people. Drink prices are high as are the prices for entrees, however, the food was very good. I would characterize this as a special occasion location, so the prices can be a little high, but still be a good value for what you get.

My open-faced fish sandwich was 90% cheese & only 10% fish. My seafood bisque tasted like it had been made by machines on an assembly line~with no human touch, e.g. Tasted like it was poured out of a can into my soup bowl. I was ashamed that I brought 2 out of town guests to the lunch with me.

Went to Skates on the Bay after my daughters recommendation. Had a great time! First of all the view is amazing! You can see the Bay Bridge and the Golden Gate with San Fran sitting right in the middle. The food was excellent! Had great service (ask for Garette!) and amazing fresh cocktails. We'll worth a visit if you're in Berkeley or even Oakland.

I have been going to this restaurant for a number of yrs on and off. My last experience was terrible. The menu has been under construction its nothing like it use to be. Something's change is not good. I was embrassed it was my daughters 14th birthday. I had a party of 7 glad no one else decided to come. It was not at all what I had experienced in the past. So embarrassing food not cooked properly. With several of the dishes ordered. Sent them back to the kitchen. By the time we did get something my appetite was gone. 😖😔

We eat at Skates several times a year. This time, we came for a "Trio" special they were offering: Steak, Prawns and Lobster. I'm usually not a huge fan of specials such as this, but I have to say, it was fantastic! Steak was perfect, the 1/2 lobster was so fresh, sweet and perfectly prepared and the prawns were incredibly tasty. I never cease to be surprised that Skates, which could get by on just the view, has great service and consistently great food!

I had not been to Skates in over a decade. My nephew wanted to celebrate his birthday there. We had a great window seat . . . a man in a canoe waived his ore at us as he paddeled by. We ordered the Sushi and it was AMAZING. We topped lunch off with the Berry Cheesecake and Key Lime Pie . . . . absolutely magnificent. I plan on visiting Skates again in the very near future.

Skates is on piers over the lapping water with a world-class view of the Golden Gate, the Berkeley pier, Mount Tam, sunset, and the lights of San Francisco after dark. Watch sailors go in and out of the Berkeley marina, watch sailboarders, watch watch watch. The crab and artichoke dip appetizer is a must. Flavors, colors, and textures are all terrific. No false notes in the service or food.

I went for lunch with my friends on my birthday. The venue is terrific (I have been there many times over the years). The Louie Salad was the best meal, and we were all glad they have returned to serving cut foccaccia instead of hard rolls and bread. However, although lobster roll and calamari sandwich were on the menu, they did not have either, and were removing both from the menu, which was being revised. I ordered the open face crab/cheese/artichoke sandwich. There was too much mayo and not much crab in it, and I actually had an artichoke leaf in the mix. It was okay, but I would not recommend it, until they make it less liquidy and get it right. The clam chowder, fish and fries were very good.

I rate Skates at the very top of my favorites list. My girlfriend, her young daughter and I visited for brunch on Sunday and had a wonderful meal. We sat at a window and admired a beautiful day on the bay while sharing the crab and artichoke dip appetizer. I order that dish everytime I come to Skates and have introduced my friends and faily members to it. It's a great starter! I've yet to meet anyone who didn't enjoy it. Even the 9-year old called it "Yummy!" I had the pan seared Mahi, which was great, but the truly memorable part of the dish was the risotto! It's best that you be sitting down when you taste it the flavors are so overwhelmingly good. My girlfriend had the cedar plank salmon, which she enjoyed tremendously as well.

Skates is always good, and the view, barring fog is wonderful. We had guests from the Chicago area, one with a birthday and had asked specifically for a window table to impress the couple. We arrived 10 minutes early for our 7pm reservation, and though they tried could not provide us a window four. The table we received was fine and Jeremy C., our server made up for any upset over not being at the window. Our cocktails were their immediately, Jeremy let us relax before we ordered steamed clams and raw oysters starters. He was excellent in guiding us through our choices, Scallops, Prawns with Linguini, and Prime Rib. The Pinot we ordered was not available, the Mark West recommended was great. The guests will be back, guaranteed. Thanks.

Our Server was superb, the food was wonderful and I love it that they have two different "pours" of wine -- 6 oz. and 9 oz. We stuck to seafood and weren't disappointed. The oysters were fresh and crisp, sushi was amazing, cedar plank salmon very special. I need to be gluten-free and felt very well taken care of. When the server brought bread to the table he brought me house made potato chips! A little on the noisy side and the sun glares in as it sets, but I still will give Skates 5 stars!
