We eat at Skates several times a year. This time, we came for a "Trio" special they were offering: Steak, Prawns and Lobster. I'm usually not a huge fan of specials such as this, but I have to say, it was fantastic! Steak was perfect, the 1/2 lobster was so fresh, sweet and perfectly prepared and the prawns were incredibly tasty. I never cease to be surprised that Skates, which could get by on just the view, has great service and consistently great food!

Skates is on piers over the lapping water with a world-class view of the Golden Gate, the Berkeley pier, Mount Tam, sunset, and the lights of San Francisco after dark. Watch sailors go in and out of the Berkeley marina, watch sailboarders, watch watch watch. The crab and artichoke dip appetizer is a must. Flavors, colors, and textures are all terrific. No false notes in the service or food.

I have eaten there many times and there's usually excellent service and food. This time service was slow and food was not good, overcooked on one and only warm on the other. They made a very good attempt at service recovery. I will definitely go back based on prior experience.

I went for lunch with my friends on my birthday. The venue is terrific (I have been there many times over the years). The Louie Salad was the best meal, and we were all glad they have returned to serving cut foccaccia instead of hard rolls and bread. However, although lobster roll and calamari sandwich were on the menu, they did not have either, and were removing both from the menu, which was being revised. I ordered the open face crab/cheese/artichoke sandwich. There was too much mayo and not much crab in it, and I actually had an artichoke leaf in the mix. It was okay, but I would not recommend it, until they make it less liquidy and get it right. The clam chowder, fish and fries were very good.

I rate Skates at the very top of my favorites list. My girlfriend, her young daughter and I visited for brunch on Sunday and had a wonderful meal. We sat at a window and admired a beautiful day on the bay while sharing the crab and artichoke dip appetizer. I order that dish everytime I come to Skates and have introduced my friends and faily members to it. It's a great starter! I've yet to meet anyone who didn't enjoy it. Even the 9-year old called it "Yummy!" I had the pan seared Mahi, which was great, but the truly memorable part of the dish was the risotto! It's best that you be sitting down when you taste it the flavors are so overwhelmingly good. My girlfriend had the cedar plank salmon, which she enjoyed tremendously as well.

Disappointing. The rare salmon ordered was well done with some bizarre spice rub. The scallops had a bitter spice on top. Vegetables were burned. The salad was plain and boring. Asked for a window table in the reservation, got seated next to bathroom door.

Skates is always good, and the view, barring fog is wonderful. We had guests from the Chicago area, one with a birthday and had asked specifically for a window table to impress the couple. We arrived 10 minutes early for our 7pm reservation, and though they tried could not provide us a window four. The table we received was fine and Jeremy C., our server made up for any upset over not being at the window. Our cocktails were their immediately, Jeremy let us relax before we ordered steamed clams and raw oysters starters. He was excellent in guiding us through our choices, Scallops, Prawns with Linguini, and Prime Rib. The Pinot we ordered was not available, the Mark West recommended was great. The guests will be back, guaranteed. Thanks.

Our Server was superb, the food was wonderful and I love it that they have two different "pours" of wine -- 6 oz. and 9 oz. We stuck to seafood and weren't disappointed. The oysters were fresh and crisp, sushi was amazing, cedar plank salmon very special. I need to be gluten-free and felt very well taken care of. When the server brought bread to the table he brought me house made potato chips! A little on the noisy side and the sun glares in as it sets, but I still will give Skates 5 stars!

Bad calamari, dry and tasteless. Bad scallops, raw and sandy. Bad "spoon bread" dry and tasteless. Need I say more? Oh yes, the service was good. The wine list is rediculous, way over priced cheap wine. There was a hostess that came around to the table, very nice but dressed like your mother going to the grocery store! Too many other great reataurants around to go back here. Disappointing because i have had good lunches and good bar apps in the past.

I had made a 7:30 reservation so we could see the sunset behind San Francisco and we weren't disappointed. It was a beautiful sunset and luckily we were seated at a table for two that was a little higher than the main floor. It was even better than a window table because I had a view starting at the Golden Gate Bridge and going all the way around to the Bay Bridge. The food was just okay. We had steamed clams to start, which were delicious, but it would have been better if it came with a small loaf of crusty french bread to soak up the tasty broth the clams came in. I had jumbo prawns stuffed with crab meat and the crab meat tasted fishy not sweet. We ordered a bottle of chardonnay with dinner and there was no bucket of ice to keep it cold

Perfect for a quiet and personal conversation with a friend without being overheard, We go there often, and it is always clear out to the Golden Gate Bridge with plenty of pastoral sailboats coming into the Berkeley marina. The servers are all so professional it gets spooky! They have definitely gone to hospitality schools here or abroad. Every worth a hefty tip rather than another drink to drive safely.

An ambiance set off by an extraordinary view of Bagdhad by the Bay joined to the Marin hills by the ever present delight of the Golden Gate describes our dining experience at Skates on the Bay. This was offset by the delightful crashing of the surf below as we sat in utter amazement of the most beautiful cityscape in the world. Our meal reflected the nuances of an experienced/knowledgeable chef in presentation, flavor, and quality. Service was outstanding in that the staff was not "hovering", but was subtly nearby to tend to our quality dining needs. Our server elicited well thought out suggestions regarding the menu, explaining the specifics of each meal inquiry and ultimate selection. We highly suggest this memorable dining setting.

This beautiful setting was marred by several things. We were placed at a small booth that was hard to maneuver! Waiter was pleasant and seemed competent. We received our wine, bread and a split salad promptly. However, 55 minutes later, Nothing! We complained to a passing person (not our waiter) and food promptly appeared. The scallops dish was perfect but the salmon dinner was not. The fish was cold and raw! We complained to the manager who kept passing. He offered my spouse soup. He gladly brought a requested (comp) instead as requested. Eventually the same plate came back. The salmon and the side veggies appeared torched. The fish was now ok but the sides burnt. We were offered free desserts which were delish. We will not return!

We were a party of 5 and had excellent service. The server and kitchen responded to a request for no salt and served a superb dish. I was disappointed in the King Salmon on the plank I ordered. The piece was significantly uneven and small in comparison to 3 other orders at our table. The sauce was highly salty and there was no starch with the fish. The others in my party had a beautiful crab sandwich and generous portions of the steelhead salmon. A much better order at 19.00 versus the 23 for my small salty one.
