The new menu at Skates seems to lack choices. The old menu had a variety of fish you could have prepared in a number of ways. That option seems to have disappeared. Now they offer daily fish specials and regular menu items without the variety. The prices have gone through the roof. Still, to sit and look out on the bay and see the lights of San Francisco is a treat.

I took a vendor there for lunch and there was quite a bit of delicious menu options for everyone except me. I am a vegetarian, and there was only 1 main entree except for the salads of course. My co-worker ordered the lunch special of salmon sandwich. She said it was mostly bread with a very small portion of salmon, she cut the sandwich in half and the salmon fit on the half. My vendor said the fish tacos were delicious and the mole sauce was really good. My vegetarian risotto was quite good too. Our vendor wanted a desert so we ordered a sundae and it took FOREVER to arrive. It was over 20 minutes for a sundae....really? Ice cream and hot fudge. Our meals took a while to arrive too. I learned my lesson. Never ever again for a business lunch. I will only go there when I have 2 hours to kill for a meal. Personally, I have a handful of other restaurants I would rather go.

I took a few 20+ year olds and this was their first time in a restaurant of this caliber. Two of them had never tried a crab and artichoke dip, or scallops. The chef did not dissapoint ... everyone had a great time and enjoyed the food immensely. They want to go back and have lunch. Loved the desserts!

We had a delicious dinner - all of the food was great. The sea bass was a tiny bit overdone, but all else was great. They were very accommodating with menu substitutions. Great server and we arrived at 4:40 and the sun set at 5 which was beautiful. It was my dad's 89th birthday - he is a very picky eater and he loved his entire meal.... Thanks so much!

We have always enjoyed the food and views at Skates, but recent brunch was very disappointing. Eggs Benedict with crab cakes sounded heavenly..but there was very little Hollandaise sauce and it was bland, no English muffin below, cold, dry potatoes on the side. The crab cakes were pretty good though. Would not return for Sunday brunch.

Skates is overdoing the garlic on their bread. It also seemed there was garlic in many of the dishes, such as the mashed potatoes (even though the menu did not say that these were garlic mashed potatoes).

When I stay in the East Bay, I try to have one dinner at Skates on the Bay. On my visit here I enjoyed the Mahi-Mahi Special, as recommended by my server Jonathan. There was a delicate balance of flavors with the mole sauce and the avocado pico de gallo with cilantro rice as accompaniments to perfectly grilled fish. Service here is attentive but not overbearing. Jonathan also made an excellent recommendation for draft beers. Thank you for a memorable meal!

There for a luncheon. Had the lobster bisque; wonderful. The Dungeness crab cocktail also very good. Skates seemed to have stepped up its game since we were last there; better selection, new dishes, better service. The chef came out to speak with us and we commended the food highly. Additionally, the host was quite charming and the view, as always, superb.

We had a great table along the window and saw the sunset and then the beautiful lights of the Bay Bridge and San Francisco. We began with an appetizer of sushi which was delicious. I had a bibb salad and my friend had French onion soup. Both were very good. We then split an entrée of Mahimahi which was also excellent. It had a great sauce and was very unique. The service was excellent and we were never rushed. Skates is one of my favorite places in the East bay!

It's been 30 years between meals here (mesquite and kiawe were all the rage the last time) View is still amazing. Pacing was a little off -we got our apps before our drinks, but the food was good -especially classics such as the Steak Oscar that I had. My guests both had fish Mahi Mahi and Sea Bass which had fairly modern sides (cous cous and ravioli on one and crabcakes with an apple relish for the other) which they were also happy with. My main quibble was that my scalloped potatoes were a little underdone. Also, my panzanella was more like a dandelion salad with some croutons rather than the more robust, earthy version that you would find at the more cutting edge eateries. Spouse quite liked the French Onion Soup (we really miss Grande Cafe on that score) but felt there could have been more breadcubes and less cheese ( I can't believe there could ever be too much cheese, but...) Desserts were good -bread pudding was amazing, and the flourless chocolate cake and creme caramel were decent. A little too old school for my spouse, but I would happily come back for a special occasion although the prices are on the high side

I took two friends whose birthdays are a day apart to celebrate here. We had a lovely window table where we watched the sailboats on the water (very close to the Berkeley Marina), the SF skyline, and the ever changing cloud landscape as we ate our seafood louie's. Salad was tasty, as was the bread - a kind of foccaccia - they bring to the table automatically. Birthday desserts of creme brulee and strawberries w/whipped cream were a surprise for the birthday ladies. A good time was had by all. Service was wonderful, couldn't have been more attentive.

We went to Skates for our 31st Wedding Anniversary. My wife had lobster, which she said was excellent. It was also large and meaty, and thus the highlight of the night. I had prime rib, which was very tasty, but a little tough and a little fatty. I also had creamed spinach on the side, which was so bad I couldn't eat it - this from a guy who LOVES spinach, and always cleans his plate. A nice selection of wines by the glass, and they brought us a complementary crem brulee for the occassion. On a bad note, a very large party was seated in our waitress' section halfway through our meal. This made her almost completely forget about us, and it took about 20 minutes to get my check after I asked for it. I didn't end up hating the place, but for my next special occasion, I will definitely try someplace else.

Dinner at Skates on the Bay is always special: a new menu featuring not only seafood but also meals for every taste from meat lover to vegetarian. Several dishes are created around fall vegetables such as squash and pumpkin; I will certainly return soon to sample more items from the new menu and enjoy the beautiful view of the Bay and San Francisco.

This was a mediocre experience at best. Food was okay, with some misses, and service was poor. We waited more than ten minutes for just water, had to ask for bread, the bread was burnt black on the bottom, and we were served our appetizer without a plate to eat it upon. All this for nearly $200? Sadly, the days of a lovely dinner at Skates appear to be part of the past.

I had a GREAT time visiting with my friend. We were there for about 6 hours, but what was most enjoyable was her company. We usually meet at Skates once or twice a year and usually dine there. We usually have appetizers, lunch, drinks, dinner, and dessert. This time we only met for dinner after work and were surprised to find their menu had changed drastically. We were not excited about the offerings. We ended up ordering drinks, appetizers, sushi rolls, crab cakes, and dessert. We were not excited about the food. It was okay but nothing exciting. We will go somewhere else next time.

We previously visited Skates when we moved to the Bay Area 25 years ago and hadn't been back. But our out of town guests, who were treating us, insisted. Ended up there were 8 of us and we had a round table in the front corner. The out-of-towners went earlier to sit at the bar and watch the sunset. Yes they were dazzled by the time we arrived, but we (5 locals, including our foodie adult children) were indeed impressed just how good the food is now. A special thanks to our waitress who did an exceptional job with recommendations and descriptions of each of the meals, and for accommodating our idiosyncrasies.

I ordered salmon and when it arrived I realized there was some bacon in the hash. I called the waitress and she assure me that those were cranberries. After a few bites I found large chunks of them. I do not eat bacon and I got grossed out. She should have check with the chef before let me eat the food. They took off one of the appetitezers from the bill but the food I could not eat I had to pay. It was my birthday and I really want to have quit night so I did not made a big deal out of it by requesting to talk the manager

The two appetizers were good (Crab and Artichoke Dip, Fried Calamari Misto). The Seafood Louie was mostly a pile of lettuce with a LITTLE bit of crab and 2 prawns, the Crab Stuffed Black Tiger Prawns were just so-so. The Bar was trying out new drinks, need more practice, our server (Lacey) was in a Big hurry, wanted to box our appetizers before we were finished, had to send the entrees back to the kitchen while we finished the apps. Happened on this restaurant because we were staying at the Doubletree. Knew we were going to like it as soon as we walked in. The energy in the room and the way the layout of the bar and restaurant was so eye appealing. Our view of the Golden Gate and Bay Bridge into San Francisco was breathtaking. Drinks were very good and staff all were friendly and efficient. The food was excellent. Would definitely come back and try the sushi and eat in the bar next time. It was very generous to offer us a sample of a wine that complimented our meal. It was a great experience for the prelude to our Jimmy Buffett concert!!

We met our newlywed niece and her husband here for a special dinner. The service was friendly but sporadic. The food was overpriced and under delivered. I ordered the seafood Gnocchi which allegedly contained Lobster. It was also served with 1 tiny crab leg for ~ $30.00. A huge disappointment. I ordered a mixed green salad to start. It looked like someone dumped 1/2 of a box of mixed greens on a plate and drowned it vinaigrette. There was way to much of it and way too little in terms of preparation. The dessert was a highlight - pear bread pudding with ice cream. This was the only course that delivered. Did I mention the view? Fantastic!
