  • "The food at Sixth Engine was good. It would have been better if it had been served warm. The service was SO slow. It took us over 2 and a half hours to compete our entire dining experience. The waiter was very slow to take both our drink and food orders. All the food was brought out at the same time - including appetizers, sides, and entrees. However, it took forever for any of the food to be brought out. By the time it was presented to us, I had lost interest in eating. The environment was relaxed. The restaurant was not too crowded - I think this was because of the restaurant's location."

  • "You know it's going to be a good experience when you and your dining partners are fighting over the last bit of the Frech onion dip you get as a complimentary appetizer. We've eaten there several times. Great user friendly menu, simple and honest ingredients, flavor profiles that surprise you with every bite. We'll be going back very soon and this time, I won't be sharing the dip."

  • "Came here with a 3 friends before heading out on a Friday night. Restaurant was crowded as NCAA tournament on - sat downstairs. Like the complementary chips and dip although they came out at the same time as our entrees. Good, strong drinks, too! Had the burger with onion rings - very good. Nice portions and all of us (4 guys) were full and satisfied for not a lot of money."

  • "Saw this place on an episode of G. Garvin Roadtrip when visited DC. Decided to check it out. Loved every item. DC steak eggrolls. Wings. Jerk pork sandwich was outstanding!!! And the apple fritters. Great service too. 4 enthusiastic stars. Would had been 5, but the atmosphere in the dining area was a bit plain and I'm big on restaurant lighting and music setting a scene. But the food was great. No doubt."

  • "Ok, I expected a bar / grill. It was, except the food was MUCH better than that. Oxtail nachos, ribeye rolls, scallops, shrimp, pork chops, great scotch and bourbon, all at a VERY reasonable price! Service was prompt, professional, friendly and the whole evening was awesome! I will recommend it to others, and return next trip to DC!! Great place, Katie was an AWESOME waitress!"

  • "My daughter is a "foodie" so I wanted to find a place that she would enjoy (for brunch). I had read about Sixth Engine and decided to give it a try. Both my daughter and I were delighted by our whole experience. The setting is unique and fun: an old fire station with a large mural of a firefighter painted on an old brick wall. The food was excellent. We started by splitting an order of apple fritters, which are like small doughnuts with cooked apple in the center. Delish! Then we each ordered one of their eggs benedict combinations, which were cooked perfectly. We both felt that this place was a real "find" and we will be back!"

  • "Met up with friends here for dinners while in DC. Jade took great care of us. We enjoyed a bottle of the troublemaker with dinner after a round of really lovely cocktails with appetizers. The wings were great! Also, if you have room for dessert YOU MUST get the apple fritters. So good. The atmosphere is very cozy with a pub feel, dark ambient lighting, high back booth and banquets. Really enjoyable experience!"

  • "Went here for brunch the other day and it was very delicious. I ended up getting the smoked beef hash and my boyfriend got the chocolate chip flapjacks. Beef has was harty and savory but the toast seemed not needed, however the dish couldn't stand alone without it. Perhaps a side of fruit rather than toast. I stole a few bites of the chocolate chip flapjacks and they were very delicious and it was a hard toss up on which dish I enjoyed best. Overall, great, relaxing brunch spot for a nice get together with a few friends. Wasn't too noisy and service was fine and attentive."

The decor and layout was great, you definitely got the feel of an old firehouse. I was glad they had bottomless drink options for brunch, and the food was terrific.   • "This was our first time at Sixth Engine, and we have definitely been missing out! The relaxed and intimate atmosphere instantly put us at ease. Our waiter was extremely engaging and attentive, even while waiting on a family of 8 next to us. He gave us great menu and drink suggestions. We shared the duck pastrami as an appetizer, and ordered the shrimp and grits with chorizo and the ribeye entrees. For dessert, we had Rocky Road Bomb and cheese plate. Everything was fantastic, and anyone visiting Sixth Engine--no matter your preferences--should try the duck pastrami! We had a fantastic experience and would immediately recommend it without hesitation."

  • "I read about Sixth Engine on a blog I found. The blog gave rave reviews about this restaurant, but being the skeptic I am I refused to believe one restaurant could be that amazing. Boy was I wrong. The coffee, delivered in your own personal French press was delectable. The mimosa's were on point, and don't get me started on the food. We ordered the apple fritters and they tasted like little bites of heaven. I also ordered one of the eggs benedict that arrived with hash browns. I don't know if they put a spell of deliciousness on those hash browns but I would have eaten my body weight in them if given the opportunity. Our server was attentive and knew the menu quite well. She was able to make some great suggestions for us."

The beet and apple salad was very good, the salmon delicious, but the other dish of ravioli's stuffed with beef short ribs was so good I could have eaten all of it and I can't wait to return and have it all to myself. The dessert was just the right amount of apple fritters to share between the two if us. Both the cocktail and wine were excellent. The location is very convenient to the Verizon Center as well as the Shakespeare theater company in north west DC."

  • "This was my first time at Sixth Engine; I went based on its proximity to the Verizon Center and the reviews I had seen for it online. The setting is great, with a beautiful, large patio and a super cute building inside. The service both at the bar (I arrived early) and at our table was personable and attentive; great recommendations on beer and the waitress was very patient working with my young nieces and nephew. The food itself was delicious; all six of us really enjoyed everything we tried. I will definitely be back!"

The food is well-crafted and very satisfying, with tons of options . The Chef did a great job of putting a clever twist on classic favorites, although I don't suggest making changes to the Chef's creations. Not a place for picky eaters. I would rather rent the dining space for a private event or a small, seated private dinner, than go as a regular diner. The staff is professional, well-trained, and friendly. Pleasantly impressed how Sixth Engine defies generic DC dining. Thank you for making a difference in the area!"

  • "I found Sixth Engine through Urban Daddy, and well... It's at least the best meal I've had so far this year, and definitely one I'll remember for a long time. We had some amazing hush puppies, short rib ravioli, delectible mac and cheese and the pork tenderloin with apple sauce topping. We also added on some Sherry, a couple drinks and dessert, for way less than I expected in a place with food this good. We also had a great server, who always had a great smile, and was helpful in reccomending and explaining how things were cooked when we asked about the "secret to making things soo good.""

  • "For a free appetizer, you get kettle chips with a tasty sauce. The beer menu is generally excellent without being too overwhelming. Some of the entrees in the $20 range may seem a bit small but are otherwise well prepared. The most recent time, another area restaurant actually closed for the evening without informing us that our reservation was not going to be honored. We were able to get a nice table upstairs at Sixth Engine on fairly short notice. The bar was packed this particular night, but in the summer time, and they seem to have added quite a few tv's on the first floor as well. Good vegetarian options as well. Outdoor in summer is usually quite nice, although it is right on Mass Ave, so there is the occasional firetruck etc."

  • "My friends and I ate here for brunch on a Saturday. The food was fabulous, the atmosphere was adorable but the service was super disappointing. Didn't receive our appetizer until after our entree plates were cleared....no acknowledgement of a mistake or apology. Clearly, the wait staff needs more training. Not impressed with this restaurant whatsoever- will not come back or recommend to a friend. Sad because the food was actually delicious."

  • "My husband and I visit lots of restaurants once. Sixth Engine was different. It started with a great beer list, a must for my husband and I as we are not wine drinkers. Next were the fresh chips with French Onion. It may sound mediocre but it was not...I would have bought it but the pint if I could. We ordered hush puppies that were great with their own twist. Both of our entrées, grilled shrimp and filet, were cooked perfectly with yummy presentation. We finished with the bombe and French press ME Swing coffee, which we have been fans of for years. Service was great even though we were the first in the dining room that evening. We chose Sixth Engine because of the idea of repurposing an old fire station but we will return for the food."

Perfect atmosphere where you could hear everyone at the table, but enough background music so our group's conversations weren't being listened to by everyone in the dining room.   • "Sixth Engine is a little gem tucked between two large apartment buildings. An old fire engine station has been perfectly re-purposed with this creative, friendly, and high-quality restaurant. All of the staff is friendly, happy, and care about quality. My favorite for brunch: the smoked beef hash served in a crispy potato shell. Lunch is great too, and their cheeseburger and house-made onion rings are awesome. Haven't tried dinner yet, but will soon."

  • "This was my second visit to the restaurant. I remember the drinks being good and the food being okay. This time, the drinks were good and the food wasn't. A lot of fries that were hot and fresh, but still hard. Also, shrimp sandwich was kinda of cold and wet and the shrimp were tough and overcooked. Their hot drinks are great, though. And the portion sizes are good. Might return, but wasn't terribly impressed."
