Diner Reviews
  • "I've been to Six Penn a handful of times and it's always a favorite of mine for special dinners :-) This time we went for an anniversary dinner and had a lovely time. In previous visits I had been particularly excited by the vegetarian options but this time the menu had changed. I was a bit disappointed I couldn't get the dishes I had been expecting but our waitress was phenomenal and made some alternate suggestions! The chef came up with an amazing pasta dish for me, not on the menu, and it was one of the most delicious dinners I've ever had. We had a very special anniversary and wonderful food with excellent service."

  • "Not big enough portions, and the sides are less than desireable."

  • "Have eaten here many times and am never dissapointed. The food is exceptional. Selection is limited although I always find something that is pleasing. Location is within walking distance of theaters and sports venues. The service was quick but not rushed. Our waiter Andy was above and beyond."

  • "We went this past Friday and the noise level was too high. Not only that, but we ordered a burger with no fixings and made it very clear to the waitress and she confirmed, but the burger came out slathered with sauce. We sent it back and had to wait another 15 minutes for a new one. No apology from the manager. The chickpea cakes came out cold and I had them take it off the bill - no apology again. The experience was not worth the $130 bill for 4 - and one of us didn't even have an entre."

  • "For the prices that Six Penn Kitchen charges, the portions are SMALL. Appetizer of TWO Chick Pea cakes-- $9. Yikes! Chick Peas are not an expensive food! I visited with my parents and husband, and they all ordered a Sea Food Risotto plate. It was $27 for 3 clams, 3 mussels, and a 2 ounce portion of fish. Actually, they only gave my husband 2 clams :-/ Ouch! While the food all tasted good, they were still hungry after their meals! For as much as this place is charging for food, they should give you a bit more of it. Maybe they're trying to encourage you to order an appetizer, dinner and dessert in order to feel full (and spend more money?) I'm not sure, but their are restaurants downtown with equally good food and fairer pricing."

  • "Food was very salty - both mine and the dish my friend had..... we did not order the same food... the waitress did bring free dessert- her choosing... for the price-over $30 per meal plus a few drinks , we will not be back..."

  • "The staff was extremely accommodating to my many dietary restrictions and the kitchen prepared me a beautiful, delicious meal. I will definitely be back and will recommend six penn to others!"

  • "There were only (2) entree's without something sweet added to it. Seems like the chef likes to cook with sweet ingredients. Disappointed in the choices.......onion soup was all onions no broth...."

  • "Great place to have dinner before an event in Cultural District. Make a reservation when multiple shows or weekends. You rarely wait if you have a reservation - great food choices - always interesting items worthy of a try. The staff seem very knowledgable and want you to have a good experience. I think prices are very reasonable - cocktails have always been a good pour and all that the description says. The fresh items are indeed fresh and presentation has been interesting. I don't get tired of the menu due to the changes based on fresh options available to the chef. Fun dinner!"

  • "With so many other great restaurants downtown, it's not worth it to come here for overly-salted (caprese burger and greens with jowl) entrees. The pork shank was passable, but if you're going out for a night on the town, go somewhere else."

  • "We experienced outstanding food and service. This was an excellent choice for brunch before a Sunday show!"

  • "Went with my daughters and husband before a show at Heinz Hall. The service was ok, the ambience was very loud due to the vibrant kitchen in the dining area. My daughter and I ordered the same meal, but her steak was much bigger and cooked perfectly, while mine was a thinner and smaller NY Strip that was overcooked. Good wine list, but never asked if I wanted another glass and then it got too close to show time."

  • "Seating was prompt (hostesses could be friendlier), service was excellent, food was delicious. Steak, perfectly cooked ( my husband said it was the best he has ever had and that includes The Palm in NYC). My fish was cooked perfectly with the perfect flavoring. You must have dessert...Apple pie with house made ice cream was to die for. If I thought taking kids here would be welcomed, we would dine here more often!"

  • "The restaurant was busy and noisy due to a concert being in town. Lots of loud people drinking prior to the concert. Bathrooms were messy and stalls out of TP. Our service was slow. The server didn't know the menu. I asked what was on my plate and he said it was a mole type sauce for the duck when it was confit lentils. My sister got the wrong fish with her meal but it was something she would eat so it wasn't sent back. The dining experience was just ok."

  • "Normally we have brunch at Six Penn Kitchen before going to the symphony. This time we were going to an evening symphony so we decided to have dinner there. We were not happy with our dinner experience. We realize that because of the location and the type of meal being served the meals were 30 to 35 dollars each. This is higher than we expected. In addition, my wife had crab cakes which were served cold and had to be sent back to the kitchen and warmed up. Even after being warmed up, they were not worth the price paid, and the delay kind of put a damper on the whole thing. The service was excellent and my meal was good. However, we will think twice about going back to Six Penn Kitchen. We like the atmosphere and the service was great."

  • " The wait staff was great, especially the waiter we had who seemed truly invested in our enjoyment of the meal. Unfortunately it started off poorly when we received our appetizer of the cheese plate. The menu stated it came with a variety of jams when in fact it came with a small container of stone ground mustard. We love the combo off sweet and savory which is why we ordered it in the first place. The cheeses were excellent, but not presented in the most attractive way. The meats went untouched as they seemed to be flimsy sliced of salami and pepperoni. Two of our party ordered the crab cakes that one reluctantly ate and one sent back. Two large patties with very little crab with the taste and consistency of crab flavored cream of wheat."

  • "It was our first visit and it was great. Large windows allow a lot of light and make it bright. Service was above average. My wife had the duck breast w/fruit crepes. She said it was some of the best she's ever had. I had the pork shank which knock your socks off, fantastic. It was large, crispy on the outside, and moist, tender, and fall off the bone inside. It was seated on a bed of sauerkraut, bacon, mashed potatoes, which was the perfect marriage for the pork. It also included a small cup of homemade spiced applesauce. Our waiter said it was the heavyweight champion of the menu and he was absolutely right. We would definitely dine here again and highly recommend it to others."

  • "We had brunch last Sunday (7/20) with four guests. All four of us chose different menu selections, two having breakfast and two having sandwiches. The menu had fairly limited selections. The food was very average and was highly overpriced. I had a small ham and cheese omelette which came with a few chucky deep fried potatoes (toast not included) and the cost was $14.00. There are far better brunch spots in downtown Pittsburgh."

  • "I find the menu to be very limiting, could only find maybe 2 items that I could eat. I'm not vegan, vegetarian,etc...just would expect more especially from the appetizer section"

  • "My friend and I enjoyed a brunch at Six Penn before a show at the Benedum. It was a little pricey, but everything was excellent. I highly recommend the garden omelet (I substituted egg whites), which comes with homefries that were fantastic. Great drink choices too. My mimosa wasn't the coldest, but it was still tasty. Service was a little slow, but the place was packed and our server was extremely nice and efficient."

  • "We went to dinner before going to see Evita. The food was superb I had the white haddock with golden nugget potatoes, my wife had salad and said it was delicious. We also had a cup of their clam chowder with corn soup and desert we had their chocolate pudding. We would highly recommend going there in fact in the near future we plan on having a dinner party for 10. It's a Pearl in downtown Pittsburgh."

  • "Food is good. Especially like the portions--right size for portions. Especially liked our server, Jessica. She made us feel welcome and is very knowledgeable about the food and gives excellent service. Doesn't hover. Would like larger menu with some basic choices."

  • "We had good food and service, little pricey and I thought the menu was smaller than a recall from a few years ago. We have not been back because of the noise and probably will not be back. Just a noisy place."

  • "Wine list a little pricey. Ordered a glass of wine that ended up to be $15.00 - should have been on the price list."

  • "We have eaten at Six Penn many times, and the food is usually reasonably good. On our last visit, the service was very good, but the food was substandard. The soup was good, but the rest of the food was not. The barbeque plate portion size was skimpy for the price, the meats were dry and accompaniments were just so-so. The pizza had too many tomatoes, not much cheese. At $36, the fish special, fruit-glazed haddock with polenta and patty pan squash and snap peas was the most disappointing. The fish portion was very small, and was overcooked and dry with no discernable glaze. The polenta was okay if a bit runny, topped with some chunks of what I think was eggplant with the snap peas. Would have sent it back, but we had theater tickets."

  • "The offerings of local market food prepared in unique ways is sure to please. Portion sizes are reasonable and allow you to truly enjoy the flavor of the food as opposed to just feeling full when you are done. I do not recommend it if you have a difficult time hearing in loud settings. The noise level can get very high and you end up yelling across the table at your companions."

  • "At first me and my girlfriends weren't sure we were going to like anything but we still stayed and tried something new and we are so glad we did! Burger was fantastic corn on the cob amazing mac n cheese off the top buffalo mac n cheese ahhhaaamazing.. and it was my birthday so of course we tried cake and omg! Chocolate cake heaven! Our waiter was super sweet super nice and knew his restaurant and food!"

  • "The food at 6P is always good. The summer menu has a lot of great things on it including a crab cake and a very nice scallop appetizer. The Pork Shank is also still on the menu and looks great. The service was not great. Our waiter never brought bread and seemed confused at times."

  • "We dined as a party of 8 around 8PM on the 4th of July before we walked outside to see Pittsburgh's amazing fireworks display. Service was fantastic, food was even better, and cocktails hit the spot. We were really there for a 'quick bite' before we enjoyed the fireworks, so we focused on appetizers and small plates."
