Diner Reviews
  • "We had brunch last Sunday (7/20) with four guests. All four of us chose different menu selections, two having breakfast and two having sandwiches. The menu had fairly limited selections. The food was very average and was highly overpriced. I had a small ham and cheese omelette which came with a few chucky deep fried potatoes (toast not included) and the cost was $14.00. There are far better brunch spots in downtown Pittsburgh."

  • "I find the menu to be very limiting, could only find maybe 2 items that I could eat. I'm not vegan, vegetarian,etc...just would expect more especially from the appetizer section"

  • "My friend and I enjoyed a brunch at Six Penn before a show at the Benedum. It was a little pricey, but everything was excellent. I highly recommend the garden omelet (I substituted egg whites), which comes with homefries that were fantastic. Great drink choices too. My mimosa wasn't the coldest, but it was still tasty. Service was a little slow, but the place was packed and our server was extremely nice and efficient."

  • "We went to dinner before going to see Evita. The food was superb I had the white haddock with golden nugget potatoes, my wife had salad and said it was delicious. We also had a cup of their clam chowder with corn soup and desert we had their chocolate pudding. We would highly recommend going there in fact in the near future we plan on having a dinner party for 10. It's a Pearl in downtown Pittsburgh."

  • "Food is good. Especially like the portions--right size for portions. Especially liked our server, Jessica. She made us feel welcome and is very knowledgeable about the food and gives excellent service. Doesn't hover. Would like larger menu with some basic choices."

  • "We had good food and service, little pricey and I thought the menu was smaller than a recall from a few years ago. We have not been back because of the noise and probably will not be back. Just a noisy place."

  • "Wine list a little pricey. Ordered a glass of wine that ended up to be $15.00 - should have been on the price list."

  • "We have eaten at Six Penn many times, and the food is usually reasonably good. On our last visit, the service was very good, but the food was substandard. The soup was good, but the rest of the food was not. The barbeque plate portion size was skimpy for the price, the meats were dry and accompaniments were just so-so. The pizza had too many tomatoes, not much cheese. At $36, the fish special, fruit-glazed haddock with polenta and patty pan squash and snap peas was the most disappointing. The fish portion was very small, and was overcooked and dry with no discernable glaze. The polenta was okay if a bit runny, topped with some chunks of what I think was eggplant with the snap peas. Would have sent it back, but we had theater tickets."

  • "The offerings of local market food prepared in unique ways is sure to please. Portion sizes are reasonable and allow you to truly enjoy the flavor of the food as opposed to just feeling full when you are done. I do not recommend it if you have a difficult time hearing in loud settings. The noise level can get very high and you end up yelling across the table at your companions."

  • "At first me and my girlfriends weren't sure we were going to like anything but we still stayed and tried something new and we are so glad we did! Burger was fantastic corn on the cob amazing mac n cheese off the top buffalo mac n cheese ahhhaaamazing.. and it was my birthday so of course we tried cake and omg! Chocolate cake heaven! Our waiter was super sweet super nice and knew his restaurant and food!"

  • "While we found the service a bit spotty (different waiters kept showing up), all of them were friendly, made good recommendations and served without delay."

  • "We love this place! This was our first time for brunch. Six Penn did not disappoint! Best eggs Benedict in the city! We will be back for sure!"

  • "The food at 6P is always good. The summer menu has a lot of great things on it including a crab cake and a very nice scallop appetizer. The Pork Shank is also still on the menu and looks great. The service was not great. Our waiter never brought bread and seemed confused at times."

  • "We dined as a party of 8 around 8PM on the 4th of July before we walked outside to see Pittsburgh's amazing fireworks display. Service was fantastic, food was even better, and cocktails hit the spot. We were really there for a 'quick bite' before we enjoyed the fireworks, so we focused on appetizers and small plates."

  • "We made last-minute reservations on Independence Day, following a Pirates game. The food was pretty good, although it's bothersome to us that there were no vegetarian entrees--yes, the server explained that I could have this or that without whatever meat was listed, but it's much nicer to order an entree designed to be vegetarian, than getting something MINUS its key ingredient. The real issue was the server. Brought our wine and one of them had a gnat floating in it. No big deal--it's summer, that happens. But I could see that he SAW the gnat, and still he chose to set the glass down in front of us... Umm? The whole meal was like that--whatever he could get out of doing, he did. I get that it was a holiday & he was at work but still."

  • "i had heard that this restaurant was owned by the same company that runs Eat n Park- I'm glad that i heard that after we went, because to be honest i probably wouldn't have even tried it. We went for brunch before a play and the food is amazing! we had the crepes, the omelet, and the warm donut… needless to say i have found my new favorite breakfast spot! if you havnt been here, it is so worth a try!"

  • "Food and service is GREAT, but like anything good it comes at a price lol! Well worth it though!"

  • "How a place like this can mess up a hamburger and potato salad is beyond me. I pretty much paid $14 for a super burger and fries, which I rather would have had. I asked for medium rare and I received well done. And the potato salad tasted like unseasoned potatoes. My wife ordered the same thing and had the same problems. I will say that the tuna carpaccio we had was excellent and our server Michael was courteous and efficient. If you eat at Six Penn, order the fancy things, because they obviously can't handle the basics."

  • "A dependable restaurant with flair, perfect for a planned or casual business lunch."

  • "I had dinner here with friends prior to attending a play. The food was fine, nothing special. It is extremely noisy and difficult to converse. The waiters shout their orders into the open kitchen, which makes you feel like you're in a diner or Starbucks. The location is the best thing about this restaurant. Our waiter was very good and the manager came by to ask if we were happy with our food. Good staff overall."

  • "This was our second time going to Six Penn before the symphony. The new summer menu had just come out, and it took us extra time to even decide what to order because everything looked so delicious! My only complaint would be that it's noisy and hard to have a conversation without raising your voice. But the food makes it worth it!"

  • "Six Penn is a great place for dinner before a show at one of the venues in the cultural district. Two friends & I attend the Broadway Series every year and a few of the CLO productions. The staff is made aware of that when we arrive & make sure that we are served in plenty of time to make it to whichever theater we are attending. And, the food is always delicious. It is always a favorite of ours!"

  • "The ambience for a downtown restsaurant was good but had a tough time choosing something that I really wanted to eat. The menu could have had a longer list of appetizers or just different ones. My french onion soup was good along with my salad but my overall experience I'd give it a B. However the good news is that its right in the cultural district that makes it convienent for the shows."

  • "...thought I'd give it another try. No luck. Lamb shoulder entrée had warm/hot spots and was very salty. Wait staff appears hurried and sometimes confused. BRGR and Nakama had food trucks up the street at the Int'l Jazz Festival...had I known...."

  • "We have always received a good meal at this restaurant The pork shank is one of our favorites and I also tried the pork chop - it was huge and very good I would recommend this restaurant"

  • "Reliable good food and great service. I come here often for lunch and I don't always get to take my time and enjoy the atmosphere, so this dinner I was able to relax and enjoy."

  • "We enjoyed the food because could not hear each other speak. We would not return until they change the noise level"

  • "Unfortunately, we did not have a wonderful experience... but did like what we saw around us. The manager did compensate for the shortcomings. We ordered the lamb and the mussels, let's just say the mussels were tasty. It was a beautiful night to be dining on the roof and enjoy downtown Pittsburgh! I did say I would recommend, because I've heard wonderful things from others and I'm hoping our experience was just a fluke."

  • "While visiting my daughter in Pittsburgh we wanted a great place for dinner on a Saturday night. I asked my daughter to find a place in the downtown area since we always eat somewhere nice in the suburbs. I am fron New Jersey and a great place to eat and take family is in the city, New York that is. This restaurant was very nice, food was good and I liked very much being downtown. Ok, it's not New York but it was fun."

  • "My wife and I went here to celebrate our anniversary. The staff was attentive and the food was very good. The menu is limited but contained a number of interesting offerings from appetizers to entrees. My wife had a great steak dish and I enjoyed the fish special."

  • "The food was quite good. However, the waiter was clearly overworked and forgot several items. He was quite busy serving lots of wine to a table near us. I skipped dessert and coffee because I knew it would take too long. The seating along the wall on the second floor was clearly unacceptable. The tables were way too close together so that you heard everyone else's conversation. I really resented that I had made my reservation at least a week ahead of time, yet was relegated to the wall on the second floor. I realize that it was a busy Saturday night; however, I could not enjoy having dinner with my husband because I kept asking him to repeat what was said. I also didn't want to look at the neighboring diners' plates."

  • "Always a notable experience, with new, inspired menu items and attentive yet unintrusive service."

  • "For the price, the food was good, but not excellent. Coffee and espresso both arrived lukewarm, so we had to reorder. The noodles in our lamb bolognese were not very good. The dessert of chocolate truffle cake amounted to a large cookie with ice cream on top."

  • "Went here before the symphony at Heinz Hall. Can't beat the location! Good food, nice presentation. Service was excellent....attentive, but not intrusive. Will definitely dine here again. Would recommend for any event in the theater district."

  • "My group and I were not crazy about the selection of lunch choices on the menu. My friend and I both had the special, which was a shrimp salad sandwich. It was odd-tasting, and we wouldn't recommend it. We were left hungry after lunch was over, but we had each spent $18 on lunch (including tip). This is a little pricey for a lunch we didn't even really enjoy. I do enjoy the outside seating area, so I would probably return for drinks/appetizers on the rooftop dining area."

  • "We were pleasantly surprised to see a Chef's Tasting menu as an addition to the regular menu last Tuesday. It was outstanding, but the first course was sublime and should be a permanent fixture on the regular menu. It was a simple arugula salad with apples, hazelnuts, and a refreshing concord grape vinaigrette served along side an airy blue cheese souffle. Our server, Sheryl, was wonderful, as always. She is a true hospitality industry professional who knows her guests and she is a great asset to Six Penn Kitchen."
