Was killing time to window shop at the antique market 2 doors down and walked into Sissy's. There were two seats at the bar and we had dinner. LOVED it so much i went back 2 days later.
This is a classy-casual atmosphere. Food portions are actually normal size instead of huge. Which I enjoy because I can actually have an appetizer, small salad, then entree. More the traditional dining experience of 20 years ago. I can see why the chef was featured on a cooking show. Everyone we encountered at Sissy's was helpful, friendly, knowledgeable and efficient. The food was very good and everyone in our party from teenagers to seniors enjoyed the experience and the meal. The atmosphere was charming. Staff members are personable and delightful, the ambience is thoroughly warm and Southern (think New Orleans patio dining) and portions just right. Loved all the old standbys: deviled eggs, beet salad, the BEST fried chicken, non-soggy coleslaw and apple cobbler. Other than the whisky sour, the drinks were a little underwhelming given the flavor tipped generally in favor of bourbon without any counterbalance but certainly "efficient" as our waitress put it. That said, I did enjoy it and think it might be particularly charming for a late supper. The Southern ambiance and fare was a great escape for my wife and I. The pimento cheese and ham salad with tea bread and the biscuits and cornbread basket with the divine honey butter were fun starters. I had the fried chicken and mashed potatoes and felt like I was eating in a Southern kitchen from 50 years ago. My wife had a sampling of the different sides (mac and cheese, squash casserole, and the best fried okra we've ever experienced) for her entree and she is eager to sample the rest next time. Sissy's did not disappoint with the attention to details in its design, staff attire, and culinary offerings. Cut into smallish pieces, the crisp home-made taste of the chicken and delicious crust is balanced perfectly. The genteel mod-Southern decor belies a vibrant and fun crowd dining here, and if conversation is on the menu, best to choose lunchtime. However, we had a waiter that must have lost our order. We waited over an hour to just get our appetizers. Other than fair service, I would recommend Sissys. Tried the fried pickles this time and enjoyed those. The greens are some of the best I've had, great side dish with the chicken. If you can get a seat at the bar, nice place to have a drink before dinner. If you are looking for a quiet romantic place for dinner, this is not the place.
