Siroc RestaurantA not-so-well-kept secretI had no idea this restaurant existed despite having worked in the area for more than 10 years. What a find. There is something calming and a bit old-fashioned about Siroc, but it's not on the plates. The food is artful, engaging, and just plain delicious. I am not a fan of mixing mushrooms with fish, but they did it brilliantly with a red snapper filet on a bed of julienned green beans and the perfect swath of a cauliflower sauce. It was a business lunch, and a hurried one, but I still managed to unwind a bit. My guest only had a small plate...seared scallop with roasted artichoke and black lentils. She loved it. The restaurant is a nice size - I wouldn't call it small. The waitress and other staff were all friendly and attentive. At 8.15 the rain came down and all the outside diners had to be accommodated inside - the professional and speedy way in which this was achieved was areal credit to all their staff. The service and food remained very good during this episode with the chef reworking some dishes due to the interruption. I made reservations here for a special evening and it did not disappoint. The wait staff was incredibly nice (complimentary apps, and aperitif), and the ambience was perfect. The food was the only thing that did not live up to all the rave reviews. I had arugula salad w/beets & black pepper tagliatelle w/sea scallops (love the option to order 1/2 portion of both salad & main meal) coupled w/glass of Chardonnay (Siema Vineyards). For dessert I had poached pear - fabulous end to a great lunch.
We ate outside - its great to have park across the street - a bit of greenery helps.
The only thing I wasn't crazy about was the service: she didn't make eye contact, was abrupt and it seemed she really didn't want to be there. My colleague was wondering where is that friendly Italian waiter/waitress who would fit so well in to serve this great food.
Overall, it was worth every penny. I will be going back and most likely ordering the same dishes ;-).5/15/2013 12:00:00 AMDining With Canadian CousinsTwo Canadian cousins and I dined at Siroc on Wednesday 8 pm. They wanted "really good food." We found it at Siroc. The duck entre and salmon appetizer were superb. One cousin has Parkinsons and reflexive movements that can cause some food to drop or a knapkin to slip off. The staff was gracious nonetheless. We were seated at a round table for 4 at the back partially in an alcove, which allowed more elbow room and privacy. It was perfect for us, and enabled hearing each other better and accommodated my cousin's occasionally dropping a piece of lettuce or her knapkin. The chef constantly produces consistent, innovative food without killing the budget. The service has always been friendly as well as informative without bring overbearing. We were looking for a cute Italian place to eat and this was it. We walked from our hotel (added bonus - staying in Downtown DC). The entire experience was great. Food was wonderful. I couldn't decide so they suggested I try both meals I was deciding between. The cost was the same as choosing one meal - no added charges. The stuffed squid with white beans was a delicate start. The sweetbreads were served with a tasty bread pudding with just the right touch of gorgonzola, not overtaking the dish, and the fried onion and veal sauce rounded out the best dish I had in my week in DC. My final app was the lamb sausage, set off by the olive sauce. Albeit a little salty, it again impressed with it's thought out combinations. The wine list is smallish but there's something for everyone. The by the by-the-glass Barolo is excellente. Kudos to the chef. Staff was attentive throughout our early dinner (5:30), and the restaurant was quiet but not empty; we felt neither rushed nor ignored.
Their frisee and fennel salad is lovely - fresh and full of flavor, but not overpowering - and was enjoyed by our party of three. It's wonderful that you can order "half and half" of their pasta dishes, though none of us chose that option. Their butternut squash cappellacci is always delicious, and I love that their pasta is homemade.
While their hazelnut chocolate mousse is delicious, the gelato trio is refreshing and light - and manageable even after a full meal.

The pasta dish with duck & mushrooms is the best I have had in a long time. A half order split in two makes a great appetizer or side dish. They will substitute gluten free spagetti for the regular noodle on any of the great pasta choices. Took that option and it was so good I wanted more but am glad I did not fill up on this because the entrees were equally good. The filet was melt in your mouth tender - far better than you get in most of the best steak restaurants and fairly priced. The veal saltimbocca was huge and incredibly tender. The wine list has plenty of choices that are fairly priced. The only negatives were that desserts were somewhat generic, and only one of four dessert wines listed on the menu were available(the most expensive one, obviously). My only suggestion would be to include at least one or two "basic" or traditional italian dishes. While I enjoy the types of entrees listed on the menu, some people (including a couple in our party) had a difficult time because they prefer "red sauce italian" fare. Add a couple of plain dishes like a baked ziti or a chicken parm for those not into the classier (and very good) dishes on the menu.
