Having established Manka's as one of the top 50 hotel restaurants in the country, the owners have moved down the road - to the corner of Sir Francis Drake Boulevard and Star Route One. They've revitalized Hotel Olema and a new restaurant within it: Sir and Star. Its tables groan with the best of West Marin. Guests are invited to enjoy a nibble and sip or a lingering meal of foods and wines from within reach.   • "We were eagerly anticipating our meal here; perhaps our expectations were too high. There was no "wow factor". The soup & salad were very good & the (very fresh!) oysters were great. However, our shared entree (not on the menu) was disappointing. The whole fish was visually exciting, but it had been deep fried (which was not the preparation we were expecting) a little too long, making it dry, with no sauce to complement (or moisten) it. The wine steward was attentive and knowledgeable. Our waiter did not seem very knowledgeable about the foods/preparations, and was a bit quirky, offering unsolicited "medical advice" for fringe supplements. Overall, we're disappointed with the fine dining options in Olema/Pt Reyes."

  • "We went on a Saturday evening when the menu is prix fixe. The descriptions of the items on the menu are as irreverent and eclectic as the items themselves. Lamb that was "last seen roaming the range...." and "Leg of a neighbor's duck" gives you an idea. That extended to an almost all Marin wine menu. (By the way, if you enjoy sparkling wine, give the Pt. Reyes Sparkling NV a go.) My dining partner and I both enjoyed and appreciated the unpretentiousness of what could only be described as a fine dining experience. The price is indeed dear but it was an evening we will not soon forget."

  • "We went to celebrate our wedding anniversary with a Saturday prix fixe menu. Upon arrival we were shown a tiny table in the middle of the noisy main room. We asked to be seated at a corner table but were told it was reserved for “our lodge guests”. Said guests never showed during our dinner and the table remained empty. We spend the evening without much conversation since we were unable to hear each other. Tiny glass of sparkling wine for $ 13 was awful. Second course was served literally on the heels of the first so that one waiter was trying to take my husband’s plate while he was still eating, while my waiter tried to put the soup bowl on the dirty plate in front of me. Overall the vibe was negative, not conducive to fine dining."

  • "I think we tried almost every dish on the menu. Everything was beyond our highest expectations, the beautiful historic setting, the service, the ambience, the wine list, the food. Oh thee food,.... The food is all I can think about, even two full days after dining there. I am so elated with our blissed out dining experience. We went to Sir & Star in celebration of Mr. Mans 45th solar return. His dessert was delivered with a tiny hand crank music box that played Happy Birthday To You, perfection! We are both looking forward to returning"

  • "Saturday night dinner fixed menu was very tasty. A tad too much food for me, just right for my husband. For some reason they brought the first cours before our wine arrived. Highly recommend to not order your food until your wine has been served. Talking with another guest at the bed and breakfast we stayed, they experienced the same delayed wine problem on Friday night."

  • "Started with smudgy wine glasses to go with an overpriced very mediocre Pinot Noir. The oysters and dessert were the high points of the evening. The soufflé was salty as was the lamb sauce. The lamb itself was over cooked and a stringy. The meal would have been better received had it been my first after returning from a five day trek in the wilderness."

We paid $75 for a price fixe with generous courses and I would not have been unhappy to pay $50. The service was excellent and the ambiance civic casual. Good wine list.   • "So it started with finding the place, since they have no sign from the road & google doesn't know the building is no longer white, we were a bit confused. The ambiance is boring, the servers were mediocre, the food was mostly fabulous! So to start with the wine list, can you please organize it in a way that is reasonable, also teach your servers to say more than it is a multi-layered wine. We wanted a Chardonnay, there were only 3 on the menu, the server could only recommend the most expensive bottle. Also when one person orders a beer it would be nice to see if they would like another more than once. The server also managed to not to get the order down correctly so one of the party had to wait for their dinner. Not the best experience."

  • "The menu is very hard to understand , convoluted and way too precious.. Bouillabaise is called "green and gold" but you don't know what it is without an explanation. Choices are also very limited. Some of the dishes were not good at all, like the 3 fried oysters and potatoes. The main courses have no vegetables at all, and the sides are limited (and the turnips were hard). The pork dish, with one rib, three slices of tenderloin and a little rillettes was underwhelming. It is also hard to see the food with poor lighting and black plates. It is a shame, because it is a beautiful space."

  • "We booked a reservation for a birthday dinner over a month ago, looking forward with anticipation! There was only an option of the prix fixe menu for this Saturday evening, of $75 each, which apparently is usual. There were 5 courses, each of them very flavorful; nettle soup, a smoked fish, asparagus, a duck leg with beans (or a bowl of root vegetables in broth) and an almond cake with soft ice cream for dessert. I would just have to say that I've eaten here before, and although the flavors were very nice for each course, I did not feel they were particularly inspired or made me feel like it was a "wow" experience this time around, especially for the price. The total with tip, for 2, including one glass each of wine, well exceeded $200."

  • "We had a very elegant and romantic dinner there on Valentines Day. Since it's a bit off the beaten path it may be reserved for a special dinner but I would go there anytime. There is a thoughtful feel to the decor, the meal and the way guests are treated that is very pleasant. The worst part may be the distance it may take you to get there, but they recently repaved Sir Frances Drake beyond Fairfax and its a very smooth and beautiful ride. As they say, "it's just far enough away.""

  • "The food was heavenly. Every dish was a delight, a surprise, balanced. But the service was beyond terrible. First too many waiters taking drink orders, then nobody. We got the wrong menu, so when we asked for the faux gras (to die for) they said we could have it, reluctantly. There were very long waits between courses: We waited 30 minutes for a cheese course! When we complained, the waiter got peck, blamed the kitchen! DO NOT GO THERE ON A WEEKEND!"

  • "We arrived early on a wintery Sunday evening for dinner. A lovely front porch would be perfect for pre-dinner drinks in warmer weather. Inside, simple and elegant with hardwood, white walls, beautiful molding. The food descriptions are playful, servers are very helpful with descriptions, everything ordered met our expectations and more in presentation and flavor. Lots of regulars seemed to be present. Would definitely go back."

  • "We enjoyed a lovely and uniquely prepared dinner at Sir and Star on Saturday evening. The food was beautifully cooked and presented, and our server was excellent -- well informed about the food and wine and with a helpful approach. One member of our party is unable to eat anything containing gluten or dairy, and he was accommodating without the attitude that often makes such requests seem like an annoyance to waitstaff. The food is sourced very locally and reflects a sophisticated yet rustic aesthetic. It would have been nice to have greater geographic diversity on the wine list."

  • "Went with a party of 4. Had a great time. Food was good, but we all needed more! We all had the "O Yes" choice (prefixed chefs choice) , it was DISAPPOINTING. It lacked a course and dessert was LAME - Soft serve ice cream with a little olive oil, no cookie or ???. it would have been nice to see the Waiter at least one more time, as after we ordered he was MIA, thankfully there is helper staff to assist. So we will go back but we will be ordering off the menu, & NOT order the "O Yes" / prefixed / chefs choice... Hope you enjoy."

  • "I loved the ambiance of the restaurant, particularly the roaring fireplace in the entry, and the creative selection of offerings. Every course was outstanding and I particularly liked the 'parsnips 3 ways' which was from the O yes menu option, where the chef picked his choice for us. I had no idea parsnips could be so tasty. I can't wait to go back and try more dishes. The wine list was superb and I appreciate their focus on local wineries and local producers. The wait staff were lovely. Highly recommended but I would suggest young kids stay at home and let their parents enjoy the evening. Oh, and the Straus ice cream drizzled with McEvoy olive oil and sea salt was a great way to end the evening."

By that time, the holidays have gone on a little too long, you have eaten a little too much food and celebrated a little too much.   • "We really loved this place. I had been to the Olema Inn several times in the past and was happy to feel the same welcoming feeling walking in the door. The food was fantastic. All of it was really thoughtful and the seasoning was perfect. It was unfussy and lovingly prepared. The dinner rolls were the first thing we had and in those first bites we knew we were in a special place. I would have to say this was one of the best meals I had in quite a while. Hope to go back soon."

  • "The menu tries to create excitement with its different take on descriptions. Unfortunately the food was mundane, boring or simply ridiculous (as in the 'Duet of salads'). There were 5 of us so we tried much of the menu. And even if the ingredients are local it does not justify the prices for this level of cooking and food presentation. Compared to many other dining experiences up and down the scale in the Bay Area the prices should be around 30% less. Either that or the cooking needs to come up a notch."

  • "This is an odd place with a distinct personality. The service is quirky and delivered with a lot of ego and almost a theatrical flair. That's fine if the service is good - but it's not. Our servers rushed a lot. They did not listen to our actual orders (other things arrived). Most of all they seemed to be focused on their own experience and not the guests. The good is solid, but unremarkable. Simply not on par with the many many other wonderful options we have to choose from. It's too bad - this was on my list of places to try for a long time. A disappointment and a lesson learned. Skip it despite the race reviews from the press."

  • "The warm glowing flicker of a real fireplace beckoned as we stepped over reclaimed native hardwood floors to enter the lobby. This gem is cut straight from the Coast Ranges - full of subtle poetry, rich with flavor, originality of spirit, and friendly smiles. My wife and I enjoy a good dining experience, but not the high-brow, snobby name-dropping crowds. Our meal was so thoughtfully prepared, I felt a return visit was a required treat just to taste it again and enjoy what alterations may come in the Spring. Staff were smart,helpful and kind, but not burdensome or forceful. I rarely review places, but I felt this was a worthy venue and I hope to have an excuse to return soon."

  • "I went during Christmas season and the restaurant was literally a Christmas tree forest! It was beautiful and smelled amazing. The servers were attentive, knowledgeable and friendly and it was a great experience overall. The food was very pricey and portions weren't huge but given that all the ingredients come directly from surrounding areas--hyper local--it makes sense. And it was so delicious that I would save up to go back again. The quail and the faux gras were amazing! The "parts of pig" was also delicious but my boyfriend was still a little hungry after eating it. I definitely recommend getting the side dishes with it."
