A word from Sir and Star at The Olema
Having established Manka's as one of the top 50 hotel restaurants in the country, the owners have moved down the road - to the corner of Sir Francis Drake Boulevard and Star Route One. They've revitalized Hotel Olema and a new restaurant within it: Sir and Star. Its tables groan with the best of West Marin. Guests are invited to enjoy a nibble and sip or a lingering meal of foods and wines from within reach. It will quickly become apparent that the stewards of this elegant old roadhouse so love where they live and live to celebrate all that grows, swims and is crushed within their midst.

The dining room of the Olema inn is a beautiful, high ceilinged room with large old double hung windows with transoms above them bringing in the views of the garden. This was lovely in the former white incarnation of the Olema in and remains very attractive in the current black and white version. The only off notes in the current decor are the dining room chairs in brown wood which seem to be a holdover from the previous decor, and the kelp selfconsciously draped over the sconces. The black Windsor chair in the lobby room would go better with the haute rustic colonial look the owners seem to be cultivating. Food was fantastic. Waiter was full of himself and not fully competent, but capable busboy made up for it. I will go back again

We had the chef's sampler menu of five courses. Each course was a treat from the teaspoon of faux gras to the demitasse of very condensed tomato soup to the salmon/salmon caviar/house potato chips to the bunny leg/sausage/house potato chip to the apple tart and ice cream desert. Everything is sourced from within 5 miles, the portions seemed a bit shy but you left feeling very satisfied. Can't say as I saw a much vegetable matter on the plates, but, what the heck, it was a special occasion. The wait staff was attentive, quirkily mannered and engaging without really becoming a 'presence'. All served in a quiet room with hunting trophies on the wall. All in all, a memorable dining experience.

Beautiful dinner here with unique ambiance. Somehow they combined elegance with a rustic lodge feel. Very good service, and local ingredients from West Marin so very fresh and menu changes daily. I would have given five stars except for the fact that all the wines were also from West Marin, and there were not as many seafood selections as I would have preferred the evening we went. We had a George Lucas "Skywalker" wine that was only passable for $62. (I'm not a Francis Ford Coppola fan either--stick to film making guys!) Corkage is $25 so next time would bring my own wine. Faux gras (made with duck liver) was amazing, as was the bone marrow with oxtail onion jam. I will definitely be back. Don't go if you are offended by taxidermy.

What a lovely little spot! My boyfriend and I stayed at Manka's last January and have been dying to try Sir and Star since it reopened. It captures the same essence that Manka's does. Simple but just enough off the beaten path to stay interesting. The food was absolutely delicious. The atmosphere was cozy, homey, and a bit quirky. Just the perfect balance. Everyone - from the hostess to our waiter to the guy who poured our water (complete with impeccable handlebar mustache) - was so kind and interesting. Definitely recommend making the drive. Or snag a weekend hideaway at Manka's for a truly magical experience.

While visiting my sister, who lives in Bolinas, we tried the prix fixe menu on Saturday. Absolutely fantastic - small portions with intriguing combinations of flavors. Our serving team was excellent and courteous with a great sense of humor. We felt very welcomed. Any questions about the meal or wine were well answered.

The food and ambiance were wonderful but the service left a lot to be desired! There was one waiter in particular that was quite rude, walking away from the table when asked a question not returning until he presented the check (with flair I might add). It was the first time he smiled all evening! There was a younger man (Brandon I think) who seemed to just step in and he was fun and good. The food did not come out at the right times and presentation was lacking. I've seen similar reviews about the service and timing on this restaurant and don't know why they have not improved on both!

We had high expectations going in to Sir and Star. The place is lovely, the food descriptions on the menu are really unique and the food is quite delicious. Our experience didn't match what one would expect. It was rushed beyond belief. Within a half hour, we had two courses sort of shoved at us without a stop in between to see how we were, if we would like wine with our main course. We expect a break between an appetizer and a main course so we can savor and rest a moment but maybe one or two minutes passed and, wham, the main course was delivered! It was really disappointing, especially since the restaurant was NOT full and the waiter, when told, was not apologetic. Hmmm.

My husband and I loved our dinner at S&S. Promptly greeted, offered a drink and taken to the outdoor patio to await seating. We very much enjoyed the prix fixe meal. Portions were quite generous. We splurged and added the "faux gras" and LOVED IT. The savory panna cotta was clever and delicious as were the kale fritter in the main dish. Only ding was about table placement. The two-tops were simply too close for comfort. Zero privacy. When the couple next to us finished their meal and left - the most relaxing part of the meal began for us. No matter, we plan to return sometime in the future. Kudos to the front and back of the house for a lovely evening.

The food was very good, and nicely presented. We had the Saturday menu which is a fixed price with a choice of vegetarian or lamb. It was 5 courses and almost more than I could eat. A very good value. THe only thing that i would be critical of was the service. We were left standing and waiting to be seated for about 5 minutes, some of the plates could have been removed from the table sooner. The wait staff was friendly and fairly knowledgeable. I do think when you have spent a couple of hundred dollars on a meal that someone should be stationed by the door to thank you as you leave.

Greatly enjoyed and appreciated all the recent Open Table reviews before this first visit. Noted much praise for co-owner/greeter Margaret and was looking forward to the warmth of her presence. Despite only a few tables occupied for the first hour there (6:30 pm reservation), got no greeting or acknowledgement of any kind at any time from Margaret. It was just kind of disappointing. Oh well. Full marks to Daniel and the kitchen--food was terrific and portions just right. Service was pleasant and informative. But for Margaret's coolness, this would be high on my repeat visit list. I suspect Tyler Florence and his table were more warmly treated that evening.

We lucked out with opentable and got an 8:00pm reservation. We arrived on time though, were not seated until 8:30 which sucked. Apologizes from staff however, a comped appetizer or glass if wine would've been nice. Great service as well as great food!

What Margaret and Daniel have done to the old Olema Inn will make you forget all about the dining room at Manka's. Not that it wasn't outstanding or that it is now being replaced by Sir and Star but rather this is a whole new dining experience. The decor inside with its minimalist zen feel along with the rustic decor make it a great venue for the wonderful meal you will receive. The creativity alone caused us to eat 2 additional appetizers before our Prix fixe menu started to come. Everything from the welcome and seating experience with Mary, to the excellent staff in terms of service and wine recommendations will make this a highlight of any trip to Point Reyes.

The food here is pretty good, though nothing to write home about. Kind of creative and the use of local fresh ingredients is great. But the attitude of the staff was disappointing. We went on a Saturday, so it was Chef's tasting menu ONLY. they offer only 1 meat and a vegetarian alternative. When asked if a person does not eat the meat on the menu that night ( it was lamb), can they offer an alternative., the answer was NO, there is the vegetarian alternative only It was only after a lengthy "persuasion" and further checking with the chef that they said they would accommodate . But they would not tell us what the alternative meat will be, not even after we arrived and seated for dinner.

Menu is creative and makes good use of local purveyors. We found the service pretty disjointed and somewhat confused. Prix fixe portions were on the conservative side (first course was shared; about 1/4 of a squab was served as entree). Margaret Fox is a talented and unique restauranteur so its best to respect her innovative approach.

The service was so strange and disjointed that it became entertaining. At least 6 different people approached our table before and during our meal, but it was never clear who was responsible for what. Things were brought out (or not) at awkward times, and several times servers asked us what we had ordered or were waiting for. The food *was* very good though - both the salmon and steak entrees were delicious and two starters were stand outs; a deep fried squash blossom and (super fresh) tomato soup.

a beautiful drive to olema from san francisco. old hotel with dining room decorated impeccably. owner greets me and we chat for awhile about her restaurant and the old manka's restaurant where i ate in 1970. the manka's staff and chefs are now at sir and star. the staff is so good you think you are in a 3 star restaruant in france. the food is so good it is similar in complexity and taste to what is served at the french laundry. if i lived in the bay area, esp in marin county i would eat there once a week.

Margaret Grade and Chef Daniel DeLong have bounced back from the tragic fire at Manka's Inverness Lodge. The old Olema Inn, a relic from 1876, has been lovingly and artistically updated. Margaret runs the front of the house and Daniel is in the kitchen. Food and wines are sourced locally, expertly prepared and professionally served. My starter of "faux gras" was an instant winner, the quail was the best iteration I've had in some time. My wife enjoyed a brilliant squash blossom with yellow and green squash slices on the side. Her salmon had to be good because she refused to share. The soft ice cream dessert with a bitter almond mix was a fun way to end the meal. We washed everything down with a quality Pinot Noir. Great dining is back.

Very surprised to find that only Marin County wines are available and VERY EXPENSIVE! The waiter recommended a Pinot Noir for $82 of which we had never heard of. They have champagne from France, the only exception. Next time we will bring our own. The food was excellent! The prix fixe menu on Saturdays is clever, easier for the kitchen. The wait staff very knowledgeable however they all wait on you so you're never quite sure who to ask for what. I would go back to try items on their daily menu, but we live in Sonoma so a bit of a drive.

From Chicago, my wife and I love the Pt Reyes area and enjoy fine dining. What a treat for us to visit on successive Saturdays a well-known Berkeley restaurant and then Sir and Star. Both were outstanding and we'd give the "Outstanding Plus" to Sir and Star. Delicious, creative, and elegant use of the fresh local ingredients from the land, sea, and garden. Surprised even the wine list consisted of local coastal Marin vineyards or wine maker's - all first rate (very highly recommend wines by Sean Thackrey). When a couple courses appeared a bit too quick for us, a simple comment to our waiter sufficed and the rest of the dinner flowed nicely. We were treated as guests throughout and enjoyed the nuances of each dish presented to us.

We've had the pleasure of eating at French Laundry, Gary Danko, and Chez Panisse, yet Sir and Star is our favorite. With the same sense of originality that we saw at Manka's, this place is a gem, transporting you to a different time, familiar and at the same time new. We ordered the mid-week prix fixe plus the fantastic "faux gras," along with a bottle of the Skywalker Vineyards Pinot. Each course was a sensation, especially the lamb - we've never had better. We also love the local sourcing of everything. By local, we mean Marin County and down the road. Look for a 27 or 28 by Zagat next edition - it will be well deserved.

We had the prix fixe menu, and every dish was delicious and perfectly executed. I was especially impressed that the chef was responsive to a chance occurrence: their fisherman (woman?) caught a salmon that was filled with roe, so he made a second course of barely smoked salmon with its own roe The salmon looked translucent, but was actually cooked, but just barely, and so luscious. The rack of lamb was perfectly cooked. What surprised and dismayed us was how quickly the courses came. We had four courses in just over an an hour:as soon as we finished one dish it was whisked away and replaced with another. A nice meal should be an evening's entertainment. Next time we will start by saying "we are not in a hurry; please take your time."

We have been dining at Sir&Star since their soft opening, and have had memorable meals each time. This time, we had the prix fixe dinner, and it was quite good. We had a picky eater with us, and probably made the fatal decision to take away his decision-making powers with this set menu, but I still think he thought it was an interesting experience. The dining space is unique and beautiful. Very calming. The food is a taste sensation, no matter what you order. Highlights were the broccoli soup and the soft serve ice cream in the dessert. The short ribs were also extremely tasty. No complaints from us, Margaret and Daniel. You are continuing to make the West Marin dining scene worth taking in. Thank you.

We went to Sir & Star for my birthday and had a wonderful time. The food is very inventive, fresh and creatively plated. We started with oysters and champagne, then had a cheese popover with fried green beans, fresh tomato soup. I had a salmon appetizer and my husband smoked fingerling potatoes. I had the vegetarian entree and my husband the beef. We split meals, which worked out well. Then we ended with a lovely almond cake with fresh berries and cream. Everything was prepared perfectly, the portions were such that you did not over eat and felt great at the end of the night. The wine selection was great. The service was exceptional - we had a great time with the waiters and the owner. We will definitely go again!

We believe that food trucks have better service and food. Never once did the waiter come to ask if we needed anything nor refill our wine glasses. Maybe because he was the only waiter for the entire restaurant. There were 3 assistants running around the room. By the time we finished our main course, we had to flag down one of the assistants to inquire about dessert. We waited an additional 15 minutes for our waiter to appear and asked us if we had already been told what the desserts were. He recited the dessert quickly. When I asked for a dessert menu to look at, he said could repeat them. Bottom line, the service was terrible & the food was okay, not memorable. the portion sizes were all appetizer size. This is a forgettable restaurant.

Thank you Margaret and Daniel. The feast was generous and interesting in its variety.( in this case"interesting" is not negative) Our family supports your concept of farm to table dining and fresh local produce. I wondered where that perfect tray of little gems went, and there it was the next night on our plates. Thank you for shopping at the farmstand and understand that we would like to sell our produce and crab to you but do not pursue that to give others the chance to show the variety they have to offer. Also kudos to Margaret for the wine pairing, different ,as all we drink is red wine of the home variety and could use a little exposure. Thanks from Don, Sarah, Luella, Mickey and Arlo, who was asleep for the promised soft serve.

We had a lovely dinner at Sir and Star with their special Saturday night prefix offering. The food was exquisitely prepared, thoughtfully presented, in a setting that was both comfortable and inspiring. With an all-local fare, it is a culinary education and locavore's delight. And Margaret Grade is the best, a gracious owner and hostess. Sir and Star is one of our most favorite restaurants!

Great food at Sir and Star. We did not have good service which is too bad considering this is restaurant worth raving about otherwise.

Looked forward to this restaurant (had been to Manka's and love West Marin dining), but was sorely disappointed. Meal was decent, but unspectacular. The cutesy descriptions were better than the food itself. The service was simply bizarre. The waiters rushed around like mad, but other personnel drifted in and out of the room like they had no idea where they were going or what they were doing. Our starters and sides arrived all at once in a grand procession, with wait staff and half the kitchen. They later apologized that they brought the sides that were supposed to accompany the main course, and then brought a duplicate of the broccoli (too fried and too sweet) with the main. The looping new age music was awful. I will not return!

Even though we were 50 minutes late for our reservation, we were graciously greeted & seated by Margaret, the owner. She is a total delight & poured us a complimentary glass of wine to soothe our nerves.
