A word from Sir and Star at The Olema
Having established Manka's as one of the top 50 hotel restaurants in the country, the owners have moved down the road - to the corner of Sir Francis Drake Boulevard and Star Route One. They've revitalized Hotel Olema and a new restaurant within it: Sir and Star. Its tables groan with the best of West Marin. Guests are invited to enjoy a nibble and sip or a lingering meal of foods and wines from within reach. It will quickly become apparent that the stewards of this elegant old roadhouse so love where they live and live to celebrate all that grows, swims and is crushed within their midst.Continued

Diner Reviews
  • "With a menu verging on the too-cute, I expected to be disappointed. But the food was imaginative but rustic, delicious throughout. Service was efficient and friendly. Location attractive."

  • "Had a superb experience - intriguing menu, attentive staff, great historic atmosphere."

  • "Manka's is no more but Sir and Star is a delightful reminder that while some things lost can never be replaced, life goes on and there are new wonders to discover and to enjoy. In the end the experience is sublime. We ordered off the right side of the menu and everything was great, the portions big enough to share."

  • "Our waiter was rude and it was a real turnoff. We almost walked out. The food salvaged the experience...it was truely amazing!"

  • "If you're looking for high-end, avoid this place. If you're looking for down-home country charm, avoid this place. If you are however, looking for a place where local food comes first, then definitely GO to Sir & Star. My gf and I loved the ambiance; simple, hip, but not overly done. The food was very good, and the freshness was apparent. The wine suggestion from our waiter was outstanding. Our nits were that while we arrived early, we were more than happy to wait. Instead, we were ushered into a side room instead of the main dining room. Also, my gf noted they had a rose by the glass, and the was told they were out. . . even though a person next to us had just ordered (and received) a glass: maybe out, or maybe end of last bottle."

  • "Dined Friday July 11 at 8:30pm Beautiful atmosphere inside, place was full and lively, service was friendly and great from start to finish, food was simply outstanding. Many of the dishes are incredibly labor intensive, as well as creative, and reasonably priced given the work involved and the portion sizes which were good. Simply excellent all around, a very gratifying meal."

  • "Causally elegant, Sir and Star at the Olema is even better than the restaurant before them. (And that is fairly high praise.). The food was altogether terrific. The faux gras (no, not a spelling mistake) was as wild and wonderful as the waiter described it. The quail was perfectly roasted. And the rest was just really good. Thanks -- they managed to create a good experience for two of us even though there was a large and somewhat loud party in the big room. P.S. Oh, and the over the top wild foliage was decorous and fun."

  • "Food and most wines sourced locally from Marin county. Extremely creative chef changes menu nightly. Delicious adventure to dine here."

  • "appetizers were great, entrees were ok, wines by the glass needs some work"

  • "The faux gras sets the stage - delicious. We ate on a Saturday night, the meal was superb, service excellent. Wines are good - and all local."

  • "Our meal was just remarkable - and in every way! The quality of the food and the artistry with which it was prepared were just completely outstanding. It was of course all very fresh and seasonal, but it was also so creatively prepared. The interior is such an exciting upgrade from the old Olema Inn and is quite elegant. The service was thoughtful and very generous. We think this is probably the very best restaurant in Marin now!"

  • "Don't miss the duck "faux gras.' Outstanding! Unusual menu and EXCELLENT SERVICE! Would recommend."

  • "By my title, one would think I meant in positive way, but alas that is not the case. Our Sunday evening 7:30pm dining slot I thought would be a quiet experience but then I remembered old farmhouses with wooden floors & tables only enhance the noise factor & the decibel level was a bit like sitting near a speaker at a rock concert. The menu I wouldn't call innovative, more unusual & weird. Our entree selection: hot crab (which appeared messy to eat), quail, sea urchin, a garden bouillabaisse & a flatiron steak. We were hoping for more fish & perhaps a chicken dish. The faux gras was delish but was once it arrived, our waiter brought our salads too-Really? Pace was jagged. Waiter was too chatty. Could go on but no more characters left."

  • "The Saturday prix fix 7 course dinner was amazing. A splurge that is worth it."

  • "Another fabulous dining experience at Sir and Star, our second annual visit. We were not disappointed with the 7 course prix fix menu. As ever, we were greeted and seated by Chef Margaret. The wait staff were attentive and informative. The courses were amazing. We will be back next time!"

  • "Our group did the chef's tasting menu. Every morsel was outstanding, and the price point is very good."

  • "Recently went to Sir and Star in the Olema Inn. Had heard it was quite good so wanted to check it out. Turned out not be good, but sensational. The three of us opted for ala carte ordering rather than all of us having the chefs tasting menu. Each of our four courses were out of this world good. I wanted to note the plate of four small salads was one of the more unusual dishes I have had. Ice plant and edamone beans, potato salad, little gems upright in a ramekin and radishes and carrot hummus. Sounds strange but it really worked. I enjoyed duck leg and thigh over wheatberries. However, the menu changes daily. Corkage was $25, but they only offered Marin wines. Not right."

  • "The food was locally sourced, innovative, and absolutely delicious. The chef is a star and would be at home in any big city, and yet this restaurant is in an out of the way location. We were delighted to dine so elegantly in a country setting. However, the service does not in any way match the food. Our server literally set the food down and ran. We found it amusing, but I suspect others would be upset. Good luck if you wanted a review of the ingredients. I finally asked for a copy of the menu."

  • "The dinner food was wonderful and the service was fine and then....the ice cream machine broke and we waited and waited and waited for dessert and although courteous waiters came to tell us they were sorry every fifteen minutes or so....nothing happened. A table for two near us was given their dessert menus and then no one came to take their order for 30 minutes! We were not offered a little treat to hold us over, and when we finally gave up and went up to the desk to ask for our check; we were charged for the dessert we ordered but did not get! Of course, they fixed it when we complained. But, I have to say- service kind of fell apart with the ice cream machine."

  • "The headline pretty much says it all. Every course was fantastic. The atmosphere is very cute and rustic-chic, and the food was just really, really good. Highly recommended."

  • "We were in Inverness for a wedding and ate at Sir and Star twice. Each time, everything was impeccable. Vegetarians will be thrilled (a three salad taste treat, a vegetarian bouillabaisse), but so will people who love meat (the quail and rabbit dish was delicious) and seafood (crab!). The soft vanilla ice cream with olive oil and salt was amazing. The wine list is unusual, with lots of local wines. We'll definitely go back…..again and again."
    Dined on 6/20/2014
  • "Chef's Dinner was superb.Wine list unusual but exciting. No wine info on website, so first time diners who bring their own may be surprised and a little annoyed to find a very high corkage. The wine we brought was on the list at less than what we paid at retail plus corkage."

  • "As always, an outstanding dining experience! The service was delightful and the fool among the best in the world."
    Dined on 6/18/2014
  • "I was surprised to learn in an email sent out by Sir and Star, only a day before our reservation, that our ONLY option for Saturday night dining was the prix fixe menu, IF we wanted to keep the reservation. If we opted to cancel our reservation and chance a walk-in table would be available, the full menu would be open to us. Although we ended up enjoying the prix fixe menu, we were disappointed that we were unable to taste some of the dishes that had been recommended to us by friends who had recently dined at S&S. This seemed an odd way to treat your customers. It would seem that when the reservation was made, patrons should be able to either opt in or out to the prix fixe menu."

  • "When we were checking Yelp reviews we saw that dozens of people wrote about how terrible the service was, but we thought that there was no way that it could be as bad as people said in their reviews---we were wrong. This was the worst service I have ever experienced. We ended up waiting one hour for a cheese plate and a slice of cake. Our meal time was three hours. The worst thing was that the restaurant was half full."

  • "this is my favorite restaurant. it is always a very special experience to dine there and we usually go for our birthday dinners and special occasions. the food is delicious, creatively prepared, made of fabulous local organic ingredients, and the space is lovely. the creative care that goes into preparing the food is really what keeps us going back and what makes it always feel special."

  • "My husband and I had been here once before, and decided to return to celebrate our 41st anniversary. Our daughter wanted to surprise us, so she called the restaurant 2 hours before our reservation. She gave them her credit card number and they assured her that our meal would be her treat. Unfortunately this never happened. We paid the bill and found out later from our daughter that her arrangements had been completely ignored by the restaurant. This oversight is inexcusable and the organization of the restaurant leaves much to be desired."

  • "Long wait for food that was sometimes very good (four salads starter), sometimes mediocre (steak), sometimes stellar (dessert and rolls). Very spotty service, waiters serving everyone in the dining room, not focussing on one area. Very noisy because of all the hard surfaces (floor, chairs, walls, ceiling). It was an experience but also a certain amount of work dining there, and we won't be back. The decor was bizarre. "

  • "Lovely setting, exceptional food...the "faux" fois gras was the best we have ever eaten...the beet soup yummy and so beautifully presented. Well worth the scenic ride out to Olema. "

  • "Great food and cool decor but very expensive and not sure there is any food worth the total ticket price"

  • "After reading so many great reviews of Sir and Star, we finally booked a hotel room in Olema so we could indulge at dinner and not need to drive all the way home to the city in the dark. The service and the setting were truly top-notch. The food, however, was surprisingly hit-or-miss. There were some amazing dishes (faux gras, seaweed soup), but some were just too salty (uni madeira sauce, short rib). Also they went overboard on aioli which showed up on too many dishes. We want to give it another try because so many other people think it's awesome. Maybe just an off night in the kitchen for us. Big thumbs-up to our servers who elevated the experience--they're the reason that we will come back to give the food another try."

  • "Some of the food was fine (but how could they disfigure a leek so horribly?), we certainly had better in the area. The service was outrageously, ridiculously, irredeemably bad. Servers ranged from rude/surly/uninterested to bumbling/immature/incompetent. To add insult to injury, they brought 6 appetizers at once and then rushed our entrees to us while we were still eating our first course. We've never felt so rushed and poorly served in a restaurant. And to top it all off, the waiter blamed the kitchen misfire on the chef's surveillance cameras and pointed them out in the ceiling. We will not be returning, despite the rave review of our magazine's food critic. "

  • "Food quite special, cook seems very talented, with exception of one dish: "faux gras" a poor substitute for foie gras (tasteless in comparison). Noise level absolutely dreadful; out of the ten or so tables in a very tight space, there were two parties of 5-8 who were almost parodies of "ugly Americans" in their (noisy) disregard for other guests, one group seeming drunk already at 6PM. Service very pleasant and flawless. Just can't stand being within inches of people who seem to need to scream to talk. Can't know if our experience was typical, but the fact that their is no sound insolation and a very tight room is a big enough negative to tell friends to stay away."

  • "We felt the kitchen was trying to hard to be creative, mixing ingredients that didn't work. Most dishes were unbalanced, too sweet and or lacking in natural flavors. The chicken entree was undercooked. Learned from the server that the chef uses a method of cooking called "sous vide." A method of cooking I really dislike because so few Chefs really know what they are doing with this type of food preparation and health issues are a concern. Service was lack luster and communication between servers and the kitchen needs improvement. We will not return to Sir and Star at Olema. "

  • "The restaurant noise level is very high in the main room. The servers moved us to a side room that was much quieter. However the bottom part of the window looking out to the porch and yard was obscured glass giving us no view. The food was good. The waiter very abrupt. Not particularly friendly which was off putting. We had a much friendlier waiter the first time we came to this restaurant. Desserts not very creative. Verbiage on the menu a bit cutesy. Would prefer a more straight- forward description. "
