A word from Sir and Star at The Olema
Having established Manka's as one of the top 50 hotel restaurants in the country, the owners have moved down the road - to the corner of Sir Francis Drake Boulevard and Star Route One. They've revitalized Hotel Olema and a new restaurant within it: Sir and Star. Its tables groan with the best of West Marin. Guests are invited to enjoy a nibble and sip or a lingering meal of foods and wines from within reach. It will quickly become apparent that the stewards of this elegant old roadhouse so love where they live and live to celebrate all that grows, swims and is crushed within their midst.

Very surprised to find that only Marin County wines are available and VERY EXPENSIVE! The waiter recommended a Pinot Noir for $82 of which we had never heard of. They have champagne from France, the only exception. Next time we will bring our own. The food was excellent! The prix fixe menu on Saturdays is clever, easier for the kitchen. The wait staff very knowledgeable however they all wait on you so you're never quite sure who to ask for what. I would go back to try items on their daily menu, but we live in Sonoma so a bit of a drive.

From Chicago, my wife and I love the Pt Reyes area and enjoy fine dining. What a treat for us to visit on successive Saturdays a well-known Berkeley restaurant and then Sir and Star. Both were outstanding and we'd give the "Outstanding Plus" to Sir and Star. Delicious, creative, and elegant use of the fresh local ingredients from the land, sea, and garden. Surprised even the wine list consisted of local coastal Marin vineyards or wine maker's - all first rate (very highly recommend wines by Sean Thackrey). When a couple courses appeared a bit too quick for us, a simple comment to our waiter sufficed and the rest of the dinner flowed nicely. We were treated as guests throughout and enjoyed the nuances of each dish presented to us.

We've had the pleasure of eating at French Laundry, Gary Danko, and Chez Panisse, yet Sir and Star is our favorite. With the same sense of originality that we saw at Manka's, this place is a gem, transporting you to a different time, familiar and at the same time new. We ordered the mid-week prix fixe plus the fantastic "faux gras," along with a bottle of the Skywalker Vineyards Pinot. Each course was a sensation, especially the lamb - we've never had better. We also love the local sourcing of everything. By local, we mean Marin County and down the road. Look for a 27 or 28 by Zagat next edition - it will be well deserved.

We had the prix fixe menu, and every dish was delicious and perfectly executed. I was especially impressed that the chef was responsive to a chance occurrence: their fisherman (woman?) caught a salmon that was filled with roe, so he made a second course of barely smoked salmon with its own roe The salmon looked translucent, but was actually cooked, but just barely, and so luscious. The rack of lamb was perfectly cooked. What surprised and dismayed us was how quickly the courses came. We had four courses in just over an an hour:as soon as we finished one dish it was whisked away and replaced with another. A nice meal should be an evening's entertainment. Next time we will start by saying "we are not in a hurry; please take your time."

We have been dining at Sir&Star since their soft opening, and have had memorable meals each time. This time, we had the prix fixe dinner, and it was quite good. We had a picky eater with us, and probably made the fatal decision to take away his decision-making powers with this set menu, but I still think he thought it was an interesting experience. The dining space is unique and beautiful. Very calming. The food is a taste sensation, no matter what you order. Highlights were the broccoli soup and the soft serve ice cream in the dessert. The short ribs were also extremely tasty. No complaints from us, Margaret and Daniel. You are continuing to make the West Marin dining scene worth taking in. Thank you.

Creative, locavore food that at once showcases the simplistic beauty of the ingredients, married to complex flavors and textures. Not a mediocre bite in the lot. From cow to table fresh made soft serve ice cream drizzled with olive oil and sea salt, creamy duck patte with wine jelly slathered over crispy tartines, succulent , perfectly pink local lamb chops. Fresh from the bay local oysters. A great meal.

This was our third time here and again the food is well prepared, creative, small plates and every bite is delicious. Our go to place when we want a nice drive away from the noise of southern Marin. Too bad they were out of two of the wines we wanted but the other options were quite good. Mid week is nice and comfortable.

We went to Sir & Star for my birthday and had a wonderful time. The food is very inventive, fresh and creatively plated. We started with oysters and champagne, then had a cheese popover with fried green beans, fresh tomato soup. I had a salmon appetizer and my husband smoked fingerling potatoes. I had the vegetarian entree and my husband the beef. We split meals, which worked out well. Then we ended with a lovely almond cake with fresh berries and cream. Everything was prepared perfectly, the portions were such that you did not over eat and felt great at the end of the night. The wine selection was great. The service was exceptional - we had a great time with the waiters and the owner. We will definitely go again!

We believe that food trucks have better service and food. Never once did the waiter come to ask if we needed anything nor refill our wine glasses. Maybe because he was the only waiter for the entire restaurant. There were 3 assistants running around the room. By the time we finished our main course, we had to flag down one of the assistants to inquire about dessert. We waited an additional 15 minutes for our waiter to appear and asked us if we had already been told what the desserts were. He recited the dessert quickly. When I asked for a dessert menu to look at, he said could repeat them. Bottom line, the service was terrible & the food was okay, not memorable. the portion sizes were all appetizer size. This is a forgettable restaurant.

Thank you Margaret and Daniel. The feast was generous and interesting in its variety.( in this case"interesting" is not negative) Our family supports your concept of farm to table dining and fresh local produce. I wondered where that perfect tray of little gems went, and there it was the next night on our plates. Thank you for shopping at the farmstand and understand that we would like to sell our produce and crab to you but do not pursue that to give others the chance to show the variety they have to offer. Also kudos to Margaret for the wine pairing, different ,as all we drink is red wine of the home variety and could use a little exposure. Thanks from Don, Sarah, Luella, Mickey and Arlo, who was asleep for the promised soft serve.

We had a lovely dinner at Sir and Star with their special Saturday night prefix offering. The food was exquisitely prepared, thoughtfully presented, in a setting that was both comfortable and inspiring. With an all-local fare, it is a culinary education and locavore's delight. And Margaret Grade is the best, a gracious owner and hostess. Sir and Star is one of our most favorite restaurants!

Looked forward to this restaurant (had been to Manka's and love West Marin dining), but was sorely disappointed. Meal was decent, but unspectacular. The cutesy descriptions were better than the food itself. The service was simply bizarre. The waiters rushed around like mad, but other personnel drifted in and out of the room like they had no idea where they were going or what they were doing. Our starters and sides arrived all at once in a grand procession, with wait staff and half the kitchen. They later apologized that they brought the sides that were supposed to accompany the main course, and then brought a duplicate of the broccoli (too fried and too sweet) with the main. The looping new age music was awful. I will not return!

  • Kind Of A Weird Experience

The wine list is really odd, a Marin County focus. I get it, go local, but Sonoma is local as well and the wine list needs to be broader. The service was the weird part. Our server was......a jerk. My husband ordered oysters to start followed by sweetbreads with a side of broccoli for his entree, I ordered foie gras to be followed by the pig dish. He brought the starters, which were amazing, then brought the sweetbreads, no broccoli for my husband and nothing for me. 20 minutes later he coldly asked my husband what he wanted for his entree. Huh? So much for his order! Mine finally came and was so-so, hubby had nothing. Dysfunctional family vibe there with the staff, go to Osteria Stellina, really fun, great food, smiles all around.

My wife and I were vacationing in Inverness and desired a very nice dining experience. Sir and Star did not disappoint. We were greeted upon arrival by a most gracious host, and, while our table was prepared, were seated in front of a crackling fireplace. The wait was not long, and we were then escorted to our table - in a cozy corner and with a window view of the well-groomed outdoor lawn and gardens. We shared most of our plates, and rated them delicious and creative. We particularly enjoyed the duck liver pate ("faux gras"), the roasted oysters ("ala escargot"), the sweetbreads, and the quail. Our service was prompt and friendly. We will definitely return here the next time we're in this area.

If you're looking for high-end, avoid this place. If you're looking for down-home country charm, avoid this place. If you are however, looking for a place where local food comes first, then definitely GO to Sir & Star. My gf and I loved the ambiance; simple, hip, but not overly done. The food was very good, and the freshness was apparent. The wine suggestion from our waiter was outstanding. Our nits were that while we arrived early, we were more than happy to wait. Instead, we were ushered into a side room instead of the main dining room. Also, my gf noted they had a rose by the glass, and the was told they were out. . . even though a person next to us had just ordered (and received) a glass: maybe out, or maybe end of last bottle.

Causally elegant, Sir and Star at the Olema is even better than the restaurant before them. (And that is fairly high praise.). The food was altogether terrific. The faux gras (no, not a spelling mistake) was as wild and wonderful as the waiter described it. The quail was perfectly roasted. And the rest was just really good. Thanks -- they managed to create a good experience for two of us even though there was a large and somewhat loud party in the big room. P.S. Oh, and the over the top wild foliage was decorous and fun.

Our meal was just remarkable - and in every way! The quality of the food and the artistry with which it was prepared were just completely outstanding. It was of course all very fresh and seasonal, but it was also so creatively prepared. The interior is such an exciting upgrade from the old Olema Inn and is quite elegant. The service was thoughtful and very generous. We think this is probably the very best restaurant in Marin now!

By my title, one would think I meant in positive way, but alas that is not the case. Our Sunday evening 7:30pm dining slot I thought would be a quiet experience but then I remembered old farmhouses with wooden floors & tables only enhance the noise factor & the decibel level was a bit like sitting near a speaker at a rock concert. The menu I wouldn't call innovative, more unusual & weird. Our entree selection: hot crab (which appeared messy to eat), quail, sea urchin, a garden bouillabaisse & a flatiron steak. We were hoping for more fish & perhaps a chicken dish. The faux gras was delish but was once it arrived, our waiter brought our salads too-Really? Pace was jagged. Waiter was too chatty. Could go on but no more characters left.

What a pleasant surprise in the tiny town of Olema. The food is unique and creative but homey. One of our favorite dishes from the tasting menu was the Uni, presented in a shell with breadcrumbs and herbs, reminiscent of Thanksgiving. Recently went to Sir and Star in the Olema Inn. Had heard it was quite good so wanted to check it out. Turned out not be good, but sensational. The three of us opted for ala carte ordering rather than all of us having the chefs tasting menu. Each of our four courses were out of this world good. I wanted to note the plate of four small salads was one of the more unusual dishes I have had. Ice plant and edamone beans, potato salad, little gems upright in a ramekin and radishes and carrot hummus. Sounds strange but it really worked. I enjoyed duck leg and thigh over wheatberries. However, the menu changes daily. Corkage was $25, but they only offered Marin wines. Not right.

The food was locally sourced, innovative, and absolutely delicious. The chef is a star and would be at home in any big city, and yet this restaurant is in an out of the way location. We were delighted to dine so elegantly in a country setting. However, the service does not in any way match the food. Our server literally set the food down and ran. We found it amusing, but I suspect others would be upset. Good luck if you wanted a review of the ingredients. I finally asked for a copy of the menu.
