This our third time eating at Cakes & Ale; this time it was to celebrate my son's birthday (which I had informed the restaurant in advance). The food and atmosphere were good as in the past. However, this time the service was a hugh disappointment. Endless waiting time between courses; finished plates remained on the table with no attention; and no acknowledgement about the celebratory event. My sense is that the kitchen was overwhelmed even though the restaurant, while busy, was not crazy. I believe also that the restaurant was under-staffed. Hence, our waiter had to wear multiple hats presumably for multiple tables which affected his service as well. Sadly, we will look for other more responsive and appreciative restaurants in the future particularly given the cost.

The food was excellent but the waiter almost ruined the evening. This was a business dinner with a guest and the waiter came to the table and said he needed to "warn" us that main courses take 45 minutes so we should order now (normally I would have expected an offer of drinks and some information about the menu). So we quickly ordered food- and then three of us ordered the same thing (of 4 options) and the waiter stopped us and said that would make the chef upset as they like for people to order different things and share and experience all they have to offer. So I changed my order. Then the fourth person in our party ordered a third main course. And the waiter tried to again to convince us to not have two initial orders be the same thing. Finally, we just said that we were good with our order. To be fair, I understand what the waiter was trying to achieve but he really needs better training. Our guest is a Nobel Laureate and the evening was supposed to be memorable to all of us for that- but thanks to the waiter, he was the memorable personality.

My favorite spot in Decatur. The clam appetizer is truly outstanding!

This was nice, but not outstanding. The food did not blow us away as per Gunshow for example. Our waiter was wonderful and made an excellent wine suggestion. The bread was delicious and the food was nice enough except my husband's salad leaves were so salty he could not eat them. Who makes a salad salty? Weird.

We had excellent service and an excellent meal. We had the house special Trout which was amazing. We split 2 small plates and 2 appetizers. The tomato salad, the arancini, and the homemade ricotta with lemon were soooo delicious.

The service was very good, the food was excellent, but, in my opinion, greatly overpriced. My small tomato salad was $12. It fit on a salad plate, not a full-size salad. And they charge $1 per person for bread service. I've never heard of that in my life. My main complaint is that, despite mentioning it several times to the waiter, nothing was done for my friend's birthday. There was no question that he knew as he wished her a happy birthday as we were leaving.
