About this restaurant

Founded in 2014, Le Vieux has brought French cuisine to the heart of Portland and placed a heavy emphasis on the elegance of presentation. One look at the menu will also show you that Le Vieux has almost everything lovers of French food could ask for. There’s the braised rabbit, for one. The lamb mixed grill, roasted steelhead and Moroccan beef brisket are equally sumptuous. Being a French restaurant, you can count on a number of amazing vintages and some to-die-for desserts like warm brioche doughnuts or a chocolate layer cake served with peppermint ice cream. Even the cheese plate at Le Vieux is incredible.

We went to Le Vieux for dinner last Wednesday for the Portland Dining month, and enjoyed the meals very much! We did feel that the portions we were served of the salads and the entrees were somewhat on the small side, and wondered if that was because of the $29 special for the month. The hostess was great and we found out from her more about the restaurant which was interesting, then we came home and read more on-line about how it began. No bread was served, probably OK, so don't expect extras like that before your meal. It took longer than expected to get our food, but I think that is because there is one chef to put out all the delicious meals. Overall, nice!

The four of us dined here during Portland's annual Resturant week and enjoyed the three course options of lamb and tangine chicken-cauliflower leek soup was excellent and service was attentive but wasn't really a memorable experience. We would stop by again if in the neighborhood but wouldn't choose it for a special event. Come here for good food and a nice atmosphere - you will have an enjoyable evening.

Tried as one of March Dining Month new place to go. Everything was fantastic and the regular menu looked just as good. We asked for help matching the wine and were more than happy with pairing. We will be back!

Food was fantastic, however one of our dinners arrived about 15 minutes after the others due to an error in the kitchen. It was first reported to be coming out in 2 minutes but that didn't happen. This caused us to be late for a theater date and made it a rush to finish desert and bolt. One of the servers was unapologetic, blaming it on the kitchen and the other just avoided us. The management did nothing to make up for the error. A multitude of things could have been done to bridge the gap, they could have asked if the unserved diner wanted the incorrectly cooked meal or something to bridge the wait rather than just leaving them with an empty spot and our dinners getting cold. Or comped a small menu item like the appetizer. Customer service is important when there is so much competition in this town. Perhaps they will become better organized or learn to value a diners time in the near future.

The menu was interesting and we spent three and a half hours enjoying appetizers, salads, entrees and dessert. The wines were very good and moderately priced. We will return.

The menu sounded great and based on several reviews we wanted to give it a try. My husband and I tried each item on the dining month menu. Overall, the meal lacked flavor as we both kept looking for a salt shaker. The lamb served "2 ways" was dry and really "was nothing new". The chicken entrée presentation was good, but the flavor and texture (dry and chewy) did not live up to it. The dessert was a basic chocolate cookie filled with mint ice cream. It needed to be tempered as it was hard as a rock when we received it.

Great setting, with dinner served until after 9 pm. Knowledgeable and passionate staff. After a slow starter we had outstanding main dishes, the steelhead and the cassoulet. Wine list lacks a 'house wine' but the Vacqueyras wine served was very good. Nice, relaxing atmosphere.

We had a wonderful dinner here. Service was friendly and very responsive. Our party of three had three dishes: half a roster chicken, steelhead, and cassoulet. Also were excellent - rich and flavorful, good-sized portions, and perfectly cooked. Appetizers (pickles and cheeses) were also excellent. Overall a delightful country French culinary experience. Try to get in soon. It's a shame, but they will be going out of business in late March.

Most enjoyable! The cauliflower appetizer was lightly fried, crisp on the outside and just crunchy enough on the inside. The Bouillabaisse entree had a rich savory broth that complemented the fresh Pacific Northwest fish and shellfish, and the cassoulet really showcased the duck confit. Friendly and helpful front-house staff and a very competent team in the kitchen. It's on our "go back" list.
