About this restaurant

  • Neighborhood gem
  • Innovative
  • Romantic
French Louie is a French-American bistro from the owners of Buttermilk Channel. The menu offers a mix of reinterpreted bistro classics and signature dishes. Highlights include east and west coast oysters, three variations on steak frites, and whole grilled fish. The menu always includes multiple vegetarian, vegan, gluten free, and dairy free options. The wine list celebrates the wines of France and America, both traditional and modern, ranging from inexpensive "bistro" wines to some of the most celebrated bottles in the world. The full bar includes a list of seasonal cocktails made from artisan spirits. The dining room is elegant and comfortable, and the fairy-lit garden is open in warmer weather for dining and private events. Open for dinner, lunch, and brunch.

We had brunch there, all three dishes looked great and tasted great and were subtly different from the usual fare without being in any way off-putting. The dining room is really pretty and staff were all courteous.

Cocktails were mixed. My wife ordered the Darling Nicky, whch was a bit much for her but lucky for me: it was delish. The bourbon cocktail I ordered was good, got mellowed and improved as the giant ice cube melted while I was drinking the Darling Nicky. The side of the brussel sprouts we shared for an appetizer was fantastic, sprouts perfectly done without that bitterness so common. The duck breast was off-the-charts fantastic. Top 5 dishes I've ever had. I'll usually go for a steak, and with the two great options on the menu it would have been so easy. So glad I went for the duck!

The person who greeted us at the door was unfriendly and didn't give us a very welcome feeling. The service was slow despite the fact that the restaurant was not full. The food was adequate except for the Escargot with Scallops and Tuna which were excellent. There are so many great options in this neighborhood. I wouldn't put this at the top of my list.

The foie gra came with 4 slices of yummy toast, a mustard seed thingy, some crumb thingies and reduction. Best ever. I'm a beef person, but since I had their kick-A steak last time, I enjoyed their equally scrumptious leg of lamb chop this time.

Although I used to love this restaurant I feel it has degraded a bit. I have been coming for about 2 years now. There were a few things I've always loved on the menu, but lately I felt the food wasn't as tasty as it once was and the portions are getting smaller. The prices have no mt changed to reflect this. This place is pretty expensive to begin with and now that you get less food it's less likely I will keep going. We always order the fried anchovies. Although I can't remember exact how many it used to come with I can tell you that the other night it came with 4. 4 fried anchovies and 2 lemon slices. Along with a bunch of appetizers that my girlfriend and I always share (usually around 4 or 5) we orders the oxtail ragout pappardelle. Same thing here. There was a decent about of meat, but there 3 (I counted) 3 pappardelle noodles. This dish was more of an appetizer size, not an entrée. Wouldn't be a huge deal but this dish was $25. I hate to sound negative, but I just feel like I am not getting a great value for my money. 2 people, 4 appetizers, 1 entree, and one of the least expensive bottles of wine our bill was over $185 with tip. Pretty expensive for what we got. I'm not saying I'll never go back, it just used to be one of my faves in BK but in the future I will be trying other places.

French Louie is one of the best dining options in Brooklyn. Doug (the owner) and his staff have made sure the food is consistently high quality and delicious, but it also is the friendliest dining experience we’ve had during the 7 years we’ve lived in Boerum Hill. The environment is simple, refined and welcoming. We’ve never been disappointed and it is our goto place when friends and family visit us. Great for dinner and brunch. If you haven't tried it’s sister restaurant Buttermilk Channel that is also a must!

Food was good, ambience was cozy, mimosas were tasty.. the only thing is that they close at 3pm to switch to dinner service and we were not made aware of this- we wanted to order another item and were told no. It would have been nice to know..

I love being able to go to a beautiful place and know that the food and service will be amazing each and every time. The reliability and consistency matters and is greatly appreciated! Thank you! The duck is always perfect — you can tell how much your chef cares about everything. I’ve been to FL about 6 times now and it’s basically my new favorite spot.

Hostess was very nice but our server was lacking. Dinner was great but tainted by the service.
