About this restaurant

Situated in downtown LA in the basement of what was once a bank, Peking Tavern serves creative Chinese fare. This gastropub has an industrial-style setting. Owners Andrew Wong and Andrew Chiu wanted patrons to have a relaxing place to unwind and enjoy Beijing street food along with a refreshing drink. An appetizer of blanched kale with shallot sauce or a lotus root salad are popular choices at Peking Tavern. Guests can dine on a plate of handmade pork and crab dumplings, beef soup with hand-pulled noodles and Chinese sauerkraut or a scallion pancake filled with sliced pork belly. Gluten-free and vegetarian dishes can also be found on the menu. Peking Tavern was voted Best of DTLA 2016 winner for Chinese food. It features a full bar that offers cocktails and more. This gastropub has a happy hour and hosts events throughout the year like Ping Pong Sundays.

Our office wanted a Chinese place close to our office in Downtown LA to entertain a visitor and we were delight to find Peking Tavern. We trusted the reviews and booked a table. The reservation process online was easy to administer and the table was ready for us by arrival. The food itself was amazing. The portions were small for the price (i.e. 6 dumplings/order) though. We tried a variety of dishes and none disappointed. Our gripe was about quickly the food was ready. For a party of 8 and perhaps 10-12 dishes, it took 90 minutes to get everything out. The first dish took 20 minutes to come out and it was the seafood dumplings. The last dish was the veggie dumplings, almost 90 minutes after ordering, to which the server told us it takes the longest to prepare (doesn't make sense). It was unacceptable and no good explanation was given. It embarrassed us. We won't be going back anytime soon. We hope that the speed of service is something that is not normal. The food is terrific but the wait wasn't worth it.

Unusual, but cool-unusual. The lady making the dumplings at the front is fun to watch. I wish they had more food options; however, it is a gastro-pub, so they have a limited menu. The scallion pancakes were delicious. Highly recommend those.

We ate at the bar and was easily served food and drinks there. The fried chicken was delicious! Very good menu selections. The only thing that caught was my attention the most, aside from the delicious fried chicken, was the lack of music. Everything else was spot on. The cool bank vault door was neat!

From the street to downstairs, found a neighborhood gem with Excellent Food and friendly crowd. Was a little hard to find because it's downstairs but worth it.

crab dumplings had no flavor. beef rolls also had no flavor. ordered potstickers hoping for at least pan fried flavor--nope. servers kept forgetting everything. there are so many great dumpling spots in LA. this spot needs to get it together.

Between the interesting cocktail menu, the great food, and the always smiling staff, this is my favorite spot in Dtla. The spicy mango margarita (actually called something else that I can't remember) is my new favorite drink, the fri chicken is amazing as is the pork and crab dumpling, and all of the little salad dishes are great for starters. So enjoyable.

This was the 2nd time I have been to this place. Such a great experience both times. The food is amazing. The menu is not big but the items they have on their menu are done to a perfection. Really a great experience and everything I have had is mouth watering. Great for groups and to share a bunch of items. I would recommend this for a date night, or even a group gathering. The bar scene is really nice and you can easily eat there or the communal tables. I highly recommend Pecking Tavern and cannot say enough great things about both of my experiences here.
