About this restaurant

  • Innovative
  • Good for groups
  • Neighborhood gem
Conveniently located at Union Square, Laut was one of the first Malaysian restaurants to receive a Michelin Star in NY. We focus on bringing the best recipes, dishes and flavors from South East Asia for you. Our goal is to preserve the flavor profiles of each dish, while maintaining the integrity of each cuisine. The only way to achieve that is to recreate them from scratch with regionally authentic spices and the freshest ingredients.

Laut, in Bahasa Melayu (Malay Language), translates to Sea. These straits or seas of these coastal cities played a crucial role in the region’s history, navigating traders and travelers from all over the world.

At Laut, we’ll navigate your palates through an adventurous journey of flavors through our cuisine. Our menu ranges from local favorites, street foods, different curries, spicy & sour broths, satays, noodles, bread (roti), and rice dishes.

I went with a friend on Thursday evening for dinner. The food was delicious but the restaurant was very crowded. The service was erratic; I had to wait for more water for about 10 minutes mid-meal. The waitress took a long time to bring us the credit card slips, but was quick to come back and abruptly tell us that "she needed the table." I have waited tables for year; when I served customers in a timely manner, they were able to leave faster so I could seat other customers. I will not be rushing back there even though I really liked the food. I would only recommend going when they are less busy.

It was a flavor extravaganza! Started with the cocktail of the day - coconut with sake. I had the national dish of Malaysia with four unique flavors the most outrageous of which was peanuts with dried anchovy. He had a Tom Yum soup that was deliciously aromatic without being too spicy. Topped it off with the Chinese Pancake (which looks like a reverse waffle or big bubble wrap) with coconut ice cream. We were in the mood for Thai, but decided Malaysian was a good choice. I'm so glad we landed here!

Fantastic restaurant, one of my go-to spots in all of NYC. Incredibly consistent each and every time I go. Best things on the menu are Roti Canai, Massaman Curry, Tom Kha with Shrimp, Pad Thai, Spicy Chili Crab, their fried rice w the egg on top-- for starters ;)
