Diner Reviews
  • "Went for dinner Friday night. Everything was delicious as usual. Returned for lunch on Saturday and sat at the bar. We were impressed with the cocktails being prepared. Had the "Spice is nice" Margarita with our fish tacos---again enjoyed everything! Can't wait to return to Los Olivos!"

  • "Outstanding food. Especially the Brussels Sprouts. Daily slider appetizer was prepared just right to allow all the flavors to come out. Service was friendly and after a slightly slow start, very efficient and knowledgeable. Fish dish was fresh and perfectly prepared. Lamb was rich, and more than ample. Wine by the Carafe is a good idea, but quality of wine in the heart of Central Coast wine country could have been better. Bottle selection was adequate. "

  • "Group of 5 including 2 kids. Had great service with an excellent menu and terrific specials. The atmosphere was fun and lively, the food fantastic and the wine list was very nice. Overall, a great restaurant that I would return to and recommend to my friends."

  • "We loved this place, stopped on our way to Santa Barabara and were so glad we did! We had the sliders ~ amazing, the beet soup ~ ridiculously good, the tataki ~ wasabi sauce made it, and the steak ~ grilled to perfection. Loved everything about it, particularly the wonderful local wine selection. Would definitely go again!"

  • "The dinner prices are quite exorbitant for the level of service and quality of the food. The cooking techniques are there but the flavors are not on point (for the price). It is perfectly decent food. Service is a bit awkward, mostly due to personalities. The servers wear jeans. If I pay nearly $40 for an entree I'm going to dress nice to go and probably so should the waitstaff. I get the theme but it is strange."

  • "Best Brussel sprouts in the world....deep friend with capers and vinegar! Better than Wine Cask in Santa Barbara! Also the specialty thick bacon...get it as a side order for only $4. Sprouts and bacon make a great dinner!"

  • "Would definitely recommend. Unique name refers to the buildings origins. Food was really outstanding and thoughtfully presented. Our favorite of the evening was the brussel sprouts. Very good wine list featuring regional wines. Hard to go wrong with this great little find!"

  • "When wine tasting in the Santa Ynez valley we always come to Sides for dinner. Every meal has been excellent, and now that they have our favorite meal back on the menu, it's even better! Do not miss the Diver Scallops on Pork Belly. They are to die for!"

  • "If it's a Brothers Restaurant , it's great. I like Sides Shoes and Hardware more than their other restaurant, The Red Barn. We get to this region once a year and Sides is always on our itinerary. This is dining at it's best outside of Europe"

  • "We have dined here before - but, this was an exceptional evening.. Food was fabulous - service was exclellent - had a great corner table. Best overall experience at this restaurant yet!"

  • "Every diner in our party of nine was thrilled with their dinner on Saturday night... Cooked to perfection with creative accompaniments. Wish I could pick up this restaurant and take it home to the Silicon Valley. Hanger steak and pork sliders were our out of this world."

  • "This restaurant is so fabulous that I measure all other eateries against it. The BEST food and friendly but excellent service. This is probably the only restaurant where I clean my plate every time - every last bite. I have never been disappointed in any entrée I have ordered and every guest I bring raves about the food, service and ambience. The chef overheard us trying to decide how the delicious Brussel sprouts appetizer is prepared and sent the waitress to correct and tell us the exact preparation. How fabulous is that?"

  • "My wife and I celebrate our birthdays as well as my daughter and son-in-law's together every year with a long weekend getaway. This year was Los Olivos/Ballard/Solvang and we were not disappointed. The food at Sides, where we had previously dined last June was excellent, as expected."

  • "Innovative food, thoughtful wine list and enthusiastic service.,what is not to love! We have lunch or dinner every time we are in the area....the fried chicken is magic. It is brined for 24 hours soaked in butter milk for another 24 and then cooked. Truly amazing!"

  • "Had a nice meal and the staff was nice and VERY helpful when my Daughter dropped a glass and it broke BUT and the end of the meal (after I had to take my Daughter back home to spare the other patrons from her being cranky) the issue happened. My Wife and my Sister stayed behind to finish their glasses of wine and were told to leave because guests were waiting for the table. How would you handle the situation if you were Sides? I would have offered them a seat at the bar and possibly topped off their glasses? Nope. This ruined it for us sadly."

  • "What a great find in an unexpected place! A former hardware and shoe store converted to dining excellence. My wife had the wild mushroom ravioli and I had the filet--probably the best we have ever had. Our waitress was excellent. We asked for two Manhattans and they poured Maker's Mark rather than well bourbon since they had run out of the latter. Fantastic place and well worth a visit."

  • "Crazy good - this is a must! The food not only tastes amazing but looks gorgeous and is oh so fresh. The wait staff is friendly and knowledgeable. I drive over an hour to eat at Sides Hardware & Shoes several times a year and it is ALWAYS worth it. Just do it!"

  • "This was our 4th time eating at Sides. This time we took 2 other couples who had never been. Although the menu didn't include our favorite dish there, we all found outstanding substitutes. The lamb was tender and had a great sauce. My wife has the salmon that she said was excellent. We also had the calamari appetizer (we always order this), the bacon cheeseburger (wasn't on the dinner menu but our server recommended it and our friend said it was one of the best burgers he had ever had), as well as a few others that were also good. The chef came to the table to introduce himself and thanked us for coming, which was a nice touch."

  • "We have been fans of The Brothers restaurants since 2000. Sides is a great addition. Excellent service delicious food and warm, cosy atmosphere."

  • "Hi folks - this is an adorable and quiet (weekday) spot and my wife and I had a very romantic dinner - but the scottish salmon was just about rare inside - had to send it back and asked to have it seared again but not sure the chef got the message - it was re-plated but still was a bit rare. Oh well. To their credit the fried chicken that my better half enjoyed was very very good. we'll go back for sure, but my first move will be to cut the salmon in half and make sure its done. Save up too because it is goes a bit north price-wise."

  • "Found the menu too limiting and way too much pork and pork products."

  • "Just experienced dinner here on a Sat night. Not a super busy weekend in the area as it is the end of crush season for the wine country. Still the place was full at 8:45 for our seating. The service was very polite and timely, felt we had her attention and very pleased with service. The menu is limited and that's ok for a place that is focusing on super specialties and such, but the dinners were just so so. The brussel sprout appetizer was well worth it! unique and very large portion for two. Salmon was over cooked. The prices were upper end. Both of us left kinda thinking we should have stopped at the steak house we passed on the way into the little town to find this place. No booths, open floor table seating, not too romantic."

  • "Went with great expectations, rather disappointed. Nothing special about the menu - not a lot of selection and kind of just comfort food. Service seemed rushed. Is this the best this area can support?"

  • "Sides is one of our favorite restaurants! It is located in the cozy town of Los Olivos but could compete with any big city restaurant. The food is always outstanding. Flavor, freshness and variety are just a few things that Sides Hardware and Shoes offers."

  • "We have been to Sides once before and loved it! We couldn't have imagined an even better experience this time around. The burger, fried chicken, brussell sprouts, and polenta were all superb. We also enjoyed the wine on tap so much that we went to the tasting room in Los Olivos the next day to buy a couple of bottles. Look forward to trying their new place in Santa Ynez opening in November!"

  • "We really enjoyed our dinner. We were in the area, and had seen the place before but it was booked. We came back with a reservation, and were seated immediately. The service is very attentive and professional. The menu is not large, but has good variety and very unusual combinations. With 4 people we selected enough different thing to sample and enjoy all of it. Next time we are in the area, we will definitely go back!"

  • "We really enjoyed our visit to Sides. The host and staff were very accommodating, allowing us to move our reservation 'up' a bit through a combination of appetizers at the bar and a table becoming available. The roasted brussel sprout appetizer, which came highly recommended by locals, was unbelievable - vinegar, salt, pepper, and well roasted (and we don't often eat Brussel sprouts!). Great preparation on both the lamb and sirloin main courses. Ice cream dessert was excellent. Only complaint was we ate too much!"

  • "My girlfriend and I arrived early enough where there were few diners in the restaurant. Despite the lack of crowd, the service was very slow and others that came in after us seemed to be receiving faster service. The server appeared aloof/disinterested about our inquiry of when our food would be out."

  • "We are huge fans of Brothers and were regulars Matteis' Tavern. That said, it pains me to have any negative comment because we have NEVER had a bad meal/experience in all the years of dining. This weekend we had a great table and friendly server. We had brussel sprouts and tomato soup (2 cups) to start...SO GOOD!. The slip up was when I ordered salmon and hubby trout. My salmon was seriously over salted and the potato cake was burnt (BLACK). I dont like to send food back so I ate most of it but didn't enjoy it and mentioned to the server at end of dinner. Hubby's trout skin soggy and fish not seasoned well. Exec Chef came by apologized comp'd my meal and sent a dessert...not necessary but he was sincere and we will return."
