Diner Reviews
  • "The sushi was amazing. They had everything and it was fresh. Awesome Sake selection too."

  • "I love the lunches, the patio in the summertime, the daily specials and exceptional service. I make a point of bringing out-of-town guests here for dinner and to experience the extensive sake menu! I've been here countless times and it's always been consistently delicious. So, thanks for being so great! :)"

  • "We really like Shuraku - great food, pretty reasonable prices, central location downtown, and very friendly -- and funny -- servers. The old Kitto at this location was great; the refurbished, more upscale version not so much; but Shuraku is excellent -- one of our favs."

  • "We booked here to get a good head start at the Commodore. First time and really impressed. Waiter was friendly and helpful, perfect level of service. Atmosphere was upbeat and jazzy, food tremendous, and price was great. Will be back."

  • "The sushi was excellent, both the signature rolls as well as the plain ol' sashimi and tuna rolls we got for an appetizer. The server was also very helpful when it came to picking out some sake for a first timer. Overall a pleasing experience and a great place for sushi on Granville street."

  • "Loved the food, service and energy! Great for us old girlfriends to catch up and have great food"
    Dined on 3/28/2014
  • "Sushi was fresh. All food ordered were very good. The male host was not friendly or welcoming. Did not like sitting at the table facing the ice machine inside the entrance to the kitchen that has no door nor drape. The waitress was very friendly and recommended a good hot sake."
    Dined on 3/21/2014
  • "On rainy days in Vancouver, try this hot stone curry bowl, you can choose between chicken or pork cutlet. Served in a heavy hot stone, and priced under $10, it is an incredible deal for downtown diners. Be there before 12:15pm as they do fill up quick for lunch. A bit noisy for conversation because the restaurant is always full."
    Dined on 3/4/2014
  • "Service was slow and we think they forgot our meal for a while. Food was good and with some interesting dishes."

  • "My husband and I stopped in for dinner last Friday. The ambience: modern, stylish. The waitresses: pleasing. The food: interesting and with high visual appeal but relatively ordinary taste. We had the worst agidashi tofu we've ever had anywhere...soft & gooey...and the special rolls we tried were attractive but worth about 30% less than what we paid for them. That said, the place was full so clearly lots of people are fine with paying more for the location and decor."

  • "Friendly, helpful service. Great fresh inventive rolls. Fantastic sushi. An awesome "hot side" kitchen that pumps out delicious bar snacks and succulent grilled fish. On top of that - as the name states - a focus on great sake. And at last! A Japanese restaurant that has chocolate cake available for dessert! It's kinda like heaven. I eat lots and lots of Japanese food all over the globe. This is one of my absolute favorite restaurants anywhere! Strongly recommend."

  • "Shuraku is phenomenal! I always think of going somewhere else but the service and food quality here is unbeatable. I can't enjoy sushi anywhere else after eating here. The staff is great and friendly and the food is exceptional. The fish is so fresh and well prepared. I would recommend this restaurant to anyone. Also, they have gluten free soy sauce which is great and tough to find. I have been going here for over 2 years now and I have nothing but wonderful things to say about Shuraku."

  • "This was the first time I've seen Japanese curry with rice on a menu and it was very tasty and fairly mild. I found the chicken karaage that came with it not to my taste as I don't like deep-fried foods, but there was an alternative choice of pork cutlet. My friend had a huge bento box which included all the regular things plus a sashimi salad. Our server was wonderful and really was a help in choosing the wine. I can't wait to go again!"

  • "In a city full of sushi this one stands out. The food is first rate, high quality and very flavourful. Highly recommended!"
    Dined on 3/8/2014
  • "The stuffed chili was good. The rest was not inspiring. Edame was tasteless. Sashimi was over priced and served without ginger. Noodles lacked full flavor. Crab nigiri was very good. Service was ho hum! The seating was too cold and hard to feel comfortable. Noise level was okay. Ambiance was totally missing. Good beer."

  • "We have chosen Shuraku many times, often when going to shows at the Commodore, Vogue or Orpheum. Every time I wonder why I don't come more often. The daily fresh sheet always has some unique specials to complement the extensive main menu. Interesting sake and wine selections. The service is always very very good, even when the place is hopping."

  • "A group of four women met here before an event at the Orpheum. A convenient location, near to SkyTrain and the Orpheum. The service was good, although when we arrived in 2 separate groups, we were shown to the table but nobody took our coats. We hung them up ourselves on a rack at the back of the restaurant. Each of us had a delicious salad and then various Japanese dishes -- all were tasty. We sat in a booth with a straight wood back, which was good for chatting but not so comfortable for lingering a long while. I would definitely go back, as this was good value and a great location."

  • "Everything we ordered was delicious, fresh and reasonably priced. Our server was very helpful and made sure the timing was right when we needed to add another dish to our repertoire of yummy sushi. The salmon belly was like butter and all the rolls were a delight. There are mixed reviews on this place, but we'd go back in a heartbeat. For 4 of us, we ate and drank as much tea as we wanted for under $81. Seriously - you can't do that in the States."

  • "Great place for excellent and very reasonably priced tapas!"

  • "If you want to experience Vancouver's famous Izakaya scene, but do not like the typical noise in Izakayas, Shuraku is your choice. Very good location on Granville and Robson, very good selection of local and import Sake, very good sashimi too."
    Dined on 2/17/2014
  • "LOVE that they serve wild salmon here. Always go with Lunchbox A. You really get 16$ worth of fish and meat as opposed to half the bento box being rice. The california rolls are made with minimal rice too. Their 8$ specials are such a deal too! :) Went back 2 days in a row :)"

  • "Great Japanese menu. Always friendly and actually open later then most. Wonderful place whether you're just walking by or celebrating an occasion."

  • "I've been coming here for the last few years and its been consistently very good. The service is always friendly and the food as good as ever."

  • "Nice busy sushi bar downtown, smaller servings but packed with flavour. Their Tuna Sashimi was melt in your mouth, something I haven't had in Vancouver for a while. Service at lunch was typical of Vancouver; busy at the start, bit lacking at the end. Overall I would recommend to visit and try a combination of sushi and sashimi offerings."

  • "Chicken karaage was my favourite. The tofu avocado salad is HUGE and tasted amazing, with lots of avocado and tofu pieces. However, sushi rolls were small and pricey. The Volcano roll was over $9 and we got 6 small pieces."
    Dined on 1/10/2014
  • "The food and service is exceptional at this almost-too-centrally-located gem. A real and unexpected treat on the otherwise irritating Granville Street strip."
    Dined on 1/11/2014
  • "Albeit unusual, RIBS in a Japanese restaurant, these were spectacular!! The spicy salmon tartar was also notable, amazing flavours and texture and incredibly fresh fish."
    Dined on 1/3/2014
  • "The food and service were alright, nothing incredible. We ordered a few rolls, chicken nanban, chicken ramen, beef tataki, and the salmon tatare. Dined with my mother and her friend, the only thing we would come back for is the salmon tatare, everything else is just mediocre and too pricey for the amount or quality of food. Service is timely but lacking any sincerity or personality. I did really like the atmosphere though, the decor and lighting were nice. I'm sure this is a good place to enjoy drinks with friends, not a place to concentrate on the food."

  • "My girlfriend and I are vegetarian, and we ended up trying a good portion of the meat-free options, and they were all fabulous. The presentation of the dishes at this restaurant is extremely impressive, and look more expensive than their price. Our waiter was very attentive and extremely friendly. Overall, a fantastic Christmas dinner!"

  • "So, as one of the few places open on Christmas Eve, I quickly made a group reservation for dinner online. Our server, Jeff, was friendly and attentive when we needed. The restaurant is quite small, and we were seated in a corner, but when we needed extra room, he was happy to accommodate us by attaching another table. The food was well presented, although some dishes like the donburi were pretty average. Try out the beef tataki though, it's beautiful. Shuraku, like it's namesake carries a dizzying variety of sakes on their menu. For someone new like myself, I recommend you ask your server which one to try with your meal. Overall, I'll definitely come back another day to try out the rest of the menu."

  • "The servers were absolute pros. Our server spoke four languages and managed to switch quickly between all to help everyone get what they wanted! She was incredibly patient. Our food came very quickly. It's great for sharing. Recommend!"

  • "I booked Shuraku on the same day (3pm) for a 7pm dinner with a group of 9 friends. Two additional members joined our group and we spent a lot of great time catching up. I was continually impressed by how accommodating the restaurant was in hosting our large group and provided very prompt and courteous service. No additional gratuity was charged for the group. The food was excellent with stunning presentation and very central location. Excellent venue for a group."

  • "This sushi bar opens till late and that's a big plus. Also another big plus is it's location - it's located right in the heart of downtown vancouver, which makes it really convenient. If you go on a weekend and arrive quite late, there is a good chance you won't get the fish or seafood that you want as it might get sold out. Overall, a great sushi bar."

  • "Thank goodness we had a reservation because there was a small line building at the door. The restaurant had a trendy ambiance like many of the izakayas in Vancouver. The service was very good: prompt, polite, helpful, and friendly. The food was very good and for a reasonable price; as were the drinks. I'd definitely come back!"

  • "Across the street from the Orpheum in Vancouver...great location prior to a show. We were seated close to a group of young people who were loud but we enjoyed ourselves and the food and service compensated our experience."
    Dined on 12/14/2013
  • "This place has great food but gets turns pricey during dinner time as it turns into a high end izakaya. That's why their lunch menu is great - very reasonable price for great food. It's a staple restaurant for our office, we've been here many times and hasn't been disappointed yet (for lunch, at least). The curry bowl and godzilla don are the popular favorites, and I personally really like the farmer don too. Chicken nanban is great too...aah the list goes on."
    Dined on 12/13/2013
  • "Plan for at least $40-60 per person for a small dinner with drinks. Food is well prepared, but for the amount of staff the service was not that great. This is an excellent spot for sake, definitely worth a try."

  • "For my second visit to Shuraku for lunch time fair I chose to use OpenTable. Downtown Vancouver is notoriously difficult at lunch times trying to get into places -- everyone eats out. But Shuraku is always lined up out the door. The food was very tasty and worth finding time to visit. The ambience would be even better if you could have a late lunch and get there when the line up is only one or two people. The menu is focused and that is appreciated because it appeared to translate to higher quality. (The lunch was great) Again, if you are looking for a quiet lunch, then try to come here after the noon to two rush."

  • "This was the second time we have been to Shurako and we will return. The food was excellent and imaginative. I'm sorry that I can't recall the name of our server because he deserves to be recognized by name for his courteous, friendly and considerate service. As we left, my partner, not someone easily impressed by restaurants, commented - "Thank you for suggesting that we came again. I really like it there.""
