A word from Shun Lee West
Conveniently located across from Lincoln Center and a startling revelation in shiny black lacquer, Shun Lee exudes Asian chic with grand authority.
For haute Chinese cuisine, it’s among New York City’s best. Regional offerings include crispy Grand Marnier prawns with honey walnuts (Canton), braised sea bass in hot bean sauce (Hunan) and shredded beef with leeks and hot peppers (Szechwan). Specialties include beggar’s chicken baked in lotus leaves and clay (requires one day’s notice), Hunan tripe, sweetbreads with black mushrooms and of course, Beijing Duck.

One of the best restaurants dedicated to Chinese cuisine, this establishment stands head-and-shoulders above the others. The dishes are wonderfully prepared and beautifully presented, with great service and a full bar, while the room is a wonderland of dragons.

The soup dumplings we had as an appetizer were very good. The lamb wrap was also delicious. However, the fire cracker prawns and scallops were disappointing. They were supposed to be spicy but they weren't and the scallops did not taste good at all. The waiter tried to make it up to us by bringing us fresh pineapple on the house.

Shun Lee delivers consistently delicious Chinese food. It is several steps above ordinary Chinese food restaurants. We had the delicious Beijing duck (Peking duck), juicy soup dumplings, a wonderful jumbo shrimp in garlic sauce, and a few other tasty dishes. I highly recommend this restaurant.

Pre Lincoln Center. The food wasn't hot. The tea wasn't hot. Expensive Chinese (I knew that since I've been before), and it just wasn't that exceptional.

Excellent quality Chinese food with upscale seating, each dish beautiful presented and served, they were sensitive to our 7:30 tickets for Lincoln Center across the street and arrival of our guests. Will make it a pre-Lincoln Center ritual.

Right across the street from Lincoln Center, so very convenient for us on a rainy evening. Not at all crowded at 6. Service was pretty fast and the food was good. The duck was a little dry, but the prawns in black bean sauce were very rich and tasted a bit like lobster. Lots of food.

Shun Lee is reliably good. The staff is welcoming and will always get you out in time for your show. It is an elegant Chinese restaurant and quiet enough that you can converse. Dishes are more interesting than a local Chinese restaurant. But it is so pricey. Hot and sour soup for one person is around $9!

Went to dinner there this past Thursday night. One of the group has an MSG allergy and they were pretty accommodating with our request to prepare food without. Only two appetizers were available without MSG. The way they serve the food is very nice but the reason I wouldn't go back is I think the food is quite bland and over priced.

It was unbelievably bad, from tiny very expensive dim sum, to what was supposed to be a whole roast duck but turned out to be a plate for each person with one overcooked leg and two doughy pancakes with a stingy serving of overcooked duck and scallions. The only thing generous was a bowl of hoisin sauce -- far more than required for such a tiny serving. The four of us are New Yorkers who have had a variety of "Chinese" for all of our lives, and this was by far the worst Chinese meal any of us had ever had. Throw in very high prices, and four commercial fortune cookies with the check, and it was as bad a meal as any of us have had in decades.

I remember Shun Lee from the 1980s. We used to order our special dishes -- whole fish, chicken wrapped in lettuce -- off the menu. The food was out of this world. 14 years later I am disappointed with the food. Bland. Without character. No pride. What has happened in the kitchen?

The dining room was over crowded with tables and diners - and waiters having to squeeze past us because the aisles were so narrow. The service was sloppy and slow, the waiter overwhelmed. And some of the food was not up to par, especially the Peking duck: unlike in the past the skin was tough not flaky and the pancakes were not well made. Our crunchies didn't arrive until the appetizers came and that was a very long time. (Although when I said the crunchies should have come when we arrived, the waiter beautifully apologized.) Yes it was SAturday night, but that's no excuse for a restaurant of this reputation.

Shun Lee West holds a special place in our hearts; we were there to celebrate our 20th wedding anniversary recently since it was the place where my husband and I had our first date and also got engaged. So it definitely was the only place to go to mark our special milestone! We loved it as always and will always remember it fondly and dearly. The service was excellent, the waitstaff was attentive, the food was as always, great! The whole beijing duck is the highlight and we have had it each time we've gone; it's not to be missed!

Overpriced for the fare, which is good but not too special. The waiter was very aggressive. He was overly friendly to the point of annoyance and coming off as weird. There was a kid kicking the booth really hard from his seat. We had to get up to ask him to stop kicking because it was really jolting (we were sitting on the other side of the booth) but he didn't stop and the restaurant didn't step in. Hard to eat when your chair is being kicked.

My name was not on the list for the evening. I sent a copy of my receipt from Open table once we were seated. He came by to apologize later. The decor is stunning. Long waits for appetizers, entrees, dessert. Waiter affable. Happy to be able to have a conversation with my date. Food mixed. My fish not flavorful, white on white does not make for a tasty meal. Ribs were excellent. We will return.

My mother and I are return diners. We ordered the Peking duck, jumbo prawns simmered in garlic with a nice spicy kick as well as the szechuan eggplant. All was awesome! The sauce served with the Peking duck creeps was incredibly salty but that was to be expected so I chose not to use it with my meal and still loved the dish none the less!

The food is consistently excellent, the service extremely attentive (but never on top of you) and the ambiance including low noise level excellent. What's not to like? We are not from New York, but we've been going to Shun Lee (back when there was only this one) when we were in town for many years. It is a sentimental favorite because a late aunt and uncle first took us there. We continue to go back because of the variety of well-seasoned and delicious choices available. Don't miss the dumplings, especially the soupy ones, for which they're rightly famous. The service is super attentive. We got our food quickly, but didn't feel we were being rushed out.
