  • A big disappointment!
    Delight
    Dined on 11/22/2014
This was a big disappointment, the peking duck was so dry that I suspect it was cooked to far in advance and reheated! The XO shrimp was skimpy on the sauce and the soup dumplings was served w/o spoons, this was because there were only 2 drops of soup in it! The lovely decor does not compensate for the serious lapse in culinary performance, we went for the food after all. What a huge disappointment! I know of many whole in the wall restaurants in Chinatown that serve much better fare at a fraction of the price!!!

Having grown up in NYC but now living out of town, there are only so many days and so many restaurants old and new we want to visit, that it becomes difficult to get them all into a regular rotation. It struck us that we haven't had REALLY GOOD upscale Chinese food in a few years, so it was a great pleasure to return to Shun Lee Palace and find it still serving it's excellent dishes ( we had Beijing Duck and Orange Beef)with impeccable, friendly service (Kudos to our waiter, Peter, who was amazed at our small frames and large appetites) just wish we lived closer so we could return more often

Our first time to Shun Lee Palace, and the experience was very enjoyable. That said, fans of traditional Peking duck may be disappoint with SLP's version (or maybe not). We went specifically to satisfy a duck craving. SLP's version was good, but not what we expected. We found SLP's "tortilla wrap" instead of paper thin crepes made the dish heavy, and unlike other presentations, the entire dish was "duck meat in tortillas," with sauce. Next time, we'll try a different dish at SLP and look for our Peking Duck elsewhere.

Enjoyed my visit and 1950's Lobster Cantonese! This as a very upscale Asian dining experience. Worth a splurge! Enjoy it..you will return...note the tipping for the Captain and Waiter...Google it if you do not understand? You get a lot of service...use it! And tip accordingly.

We entertained a visiting guest from England, who has always loved Shun Lee as one of her favorite Chinese restaurants anywhere. It also fucntioned as a `clean, well-lighted venue` at which one can dine early, i.e., 5 PM on a Sunday evening (necessary to accommodate an ensuing transAtlantic flight). Service was felicitous as always, and the food also maintained its very high standard, with the peculiar exception of the Peking Duck, which was served without scallions or hoisin sauce on this occasion. This was probably just a random oversight, although the dish as presented was unfortunately then blander than usual. Anyway, we'll be delighted to return.

I have been to this restaurant a few times over the past 10 years. The service this time out was more about up sell and tip. The staff kept pushing more dishes and then after the meal, the various waiters were more interested to see what tip I left. Other waiters who didnt serve us were checkling the final bill The portions were very small and the waiter gave me attitude when I said that my party would like to share 4 dishes, he kept trying to up sell me for more plates. I will not go back.

We have dined here before and liked it. Good food. Peking duck is one of their specialties. I had a half duck and my husband had crispy fried bass. He ate the whole thing and loved it. They serve very traditional Chinese like you remember as a kid years ago. Delicious.

SHUN LEE PALACE has been on 55th street forever. It's comforting that some things remain the same for 30 years. I go to China often and let's be clear that this is NOT typically authentic Chinese. This is the Chinese of your childhood taken to the highest level. We're talking locals from midtown and the upper east side ordering the best spare ribs, egg drop and tomato soup and Peking duck. It doesn't come cheap BUT you get bow tie waiters, comfortable seating and impeccable ingredients. Who would think that egg drop and tomato soup could be so delicious or spareribs ridiculously tender and meaty. They just took the sweetbreads off the menu and that makes me sad because they were the only place doing them. I hope they bring them back!

Myself and a girlfriend were in NYC for a mother-daughter trip with our 10 and 11 year old girls. Given how touristy Times Square is, we expected to pay more for a lackluster meal. The girls wanted Chinese and we came upon Shun Lee Palace. What a wonderful meal! The wait staff was attentive. Service was great and the food was fabulous! We ordered 3 entrees and an appetizer for the 4 of us and ate it all! When I'm back in NY, I'll be back at Shun Lee Palace!

It's rare that one finds a restaurant where nothing...no, not even a single dish...needs to be changes or upgraded. Outstanding Chinese food in a wonderful setting with attentive and expert service. Most notable was the impressively presented Peking Duck and the fresh tasting won ton soup, which included shrimp and greens. I hope you will stay in business forever,

First, as the captain was taking our order, someone from another table yelled over to him and in the middle of my wife ordering,he walked away from the table with no explanation.(RUDE).Then they forgot my wife's soup dumplings .When we told the captain, he brought them out later with no apology. All this for $18 dumplings!. I ordered the Chan-Do chicken which i was told was white meat. i asked twice. It came out dark meat. The captain insisted it was white until i cut into a piece and showed him. I got a dirty look with no apology. I ordered something else which came out 20 min later. All for $29. The restaurant focuses on their take-out biz which is where the $$$ is. What a shame for such a long time favorite. The place is a good miss now!
