A word from Shuhei
Japanese cuisine is easily one of the healthiest on Earth, with its concentration on fresh fish, seafood, meats, vegetables and rice. The zesty sauces and delicate flavors of fresh foods compliment each other beautifully, and the methods of presentation turn even simple meals into ornate, eye-pleasing events. The Japanese love of beauty and simplicity turns slices of fish into miniature artworks, turning the platter into paint palettes for the artistry of the chef. Here, at Shuhei, traditional ways of creating dishes and preparing foods are far from lost. Authentic, high-quality and extensive Japanese fare is the highlight of the restaurant complete with affordable prices, relaxing atmosphere, kimono-clad waitresses who go the extra mile to make you smile and "the best sushi this side of Tokyo" according to ZAGAT Survey 2008! • "Best Japanese restaurant in the Cleveland area by far. We've been coming here for years and expect to for years to come! Tried the soft shell crab entrée and the scampi tempura this time - both were fab! Sushi is always top notch. Highly recommend Shuhei!"

  • "Best sushi but really a fabulous kitchen best kitchen period for those non sushi diners too. Everything is made to perfection and though I am a huge sushi lover I often get tempted by scamppi bean dish, lamb chop, best tempura and his apps. Ribs!!! Beef negamki or dumplings or frog legs. This is one of best kitchens in city bar none. "

  • "Our memorable dinner began with a greeting from our server, Chi. She was very pleasant, knowledgeable and efficient. Our dinner was served beautifully and was very, very good. We will return again and again."

  • "We hadn't been to Shuhei for dinner in a few years and were pleased to find that the food is still excellent and the restaurant continues to be busy. Shuhei's has the best sushi in town!"

  • "First time here, friends have recommended it. Extensive menu, even for people who do not eat fish or sushi. Delicious food. Service is slow, so if you are in a hurry make sure to let your server know. Will for sure be back soon."

  • "We made reservations for Valentines day. We were seated and waited quite a while for our dinner, which is somewhat understandable for such a busy night and for food that is made to order. Right when we couldn't take it anymore and were about to get upset, our waitress came out with our amazing sushi. Wow!! It was well worth the wait and will definitely be back again and again. Miami heat and firecracker are the rolls that I ordered and I was thoroughly impressed. Definitely recommend!!"

  • "Restaurant is tucked away behind an office building on Chagrin Blvd. but has been discovered by many... even with a reservation we waited 10-15 minutes in the very small, packed & cold waiting area. Restaurant doesn't have the best ambiance but makes up for it with the food. Salmon nigiri was so fresh and delicious! Other rolls were just as good. Good wine by the glass options. We will definitely be back!"

  • "It was V Day, so make the necessary commentary. We had a 5:30 res, which is when they open. We ended up getting seated in the "Club Room", which from my perspective is fancy terminology for "not the main dining area". Three ladies covered the room as a team. As the room filled, service took a turn for the worse. My tea was cold, or not refilled, and to my dismay, the food order was not 100% correct. We decided to chalk it up to Holiday non-preparedness and finished dinner and left. I was disappointed only becuase I know what kind of high level these folks can operate and it was just not there this time around. The place was full as to be expected on V Day, I hope the main dining room patrons got a taste of the high life. Till next time.."

  • "Shuhei has been a constant and consistant winner for those who like Japanese cuisine. Do not expect a trendy here today and gone tomorrow type of dining spot but a fixture for fine Japanese dining for many years. That being said they have refreshed the interior and serve excellent quality sushi, lovely ramen and a menu that offers many choices keeps us coming back often."

  • "I chose this sushi restaurant because of the rating. What a disappointment. First of all the sushi is below average and the menu does not read well. The restaurant decor is tired. Even though many people are standing around, the service is very poor. The ambiance is very boring. No music, no greeting or exchange with servers or sushi chefs. To top it off, the prices are high. WIll not go back."

  • "We were a party of nine and we had a private room which was wonderful. The server was very attentive and patient with our party as we tried to figure out what to order. All of the food was well presented, hot and delicious."

  • "Shuhei is a favorite for authentic, fresh sushi and maki rolls. It is typical busy but, the staff is very efficient and service is good. I would caution if you call in an order during dinner time, the hold time may be long. All in all though, it is a great restaurant for quality food. I usually order out but dining in is good as well. It's a comfortable ambiance, the bulk of the price is really for the food quality...which is outstanding!"

  • "I really enjoyed Shuhei. Food and service were great, and the restaurant was quiet so we could actually hear each other talk. I will definitely be back."

  • "This restaurant is consistent in the quality of the sushi -- always good and the fish is fresh. The sushi chefs can get busy at times and this slows down the delivery of your order to the table. Overall good eperience."

  • "Shuhei is Cleveland own hidden gem! It's back behind an office building, unassuming. It's the best Japanese food around. Must go!"

  • "This was our second visit to Shuhei. It was better the second time and we loved the first time we went. Was a busy friday night and the staff was friendly and accomodating. Our server explained everything in detail and she was very nice. It is nice to go to a restaurant where everything is not a la carte. Food was well priced and not overcooked ( I had tempura chicken and my wife had the fish on skewers(can't spell the Japanese name for it) and daughter had the salmon. Cooked just right and all had a good time. We had a sake flight for drinks and all had a good time."

  • "This seems to be the most Authentic Japanese on the Far East Side, with some "fusion" entrees to boot. Tempura was crispy and not oily. Thank you. Sushi was fresh. Beer was cold."

  • "Went for a nice quiet dinner with my wife...first time there. And to my surprise..it was a nice quiet dinner! It is so unusual today to find a restaurant that has excellent food and service and you can hear the person talking to you that is sitting next to you. There seems to be a fascination with noise in restaurants now to make them feel so vibrant. But to so many that my wife and I have talked to that noise is what deters them from eating out less then they would have. Excellent choice of sushi..very good. And we had the Hot Pot...huge for the price you pay. Extremely well priced for what they offer. My new one of best in the city."

  • "We have been going to Shuhei for years and the food and service has always been outstanding.I was a little disappointed when we failed to see Michelle. She is an excellent server and she goes out of her way to say hi to regular customers. She is a big reason we have continued to dine here for so long. I hope it was just a very rare Saturday night off."

  • "I've been dining here since 1996 - cons - same interior decor from 1996. pros - everything else. Do yourself a favor and eat here. Skip the cream cheese, mayo drenched hillbilly futomaki and get real sashimi -"

  • "Great Sushi; great service at a locally owned establishment."
    Dined on 5/6/2013
  • "Having lived on the East Coast and abroad for years, when we moved back to Cleveland we searched and searched for great sushi. My opinion: most of the sushi restaurants in town are just not great. Too much rice. Small pieces of bland fish. Too much sauce and flourish. Shuhei is, hands down, the best sushi I've had here. The price is steep, but it's worth it for sashimi that melts in your mouth, and rolls that really are special and focus on the fish. We try to eat here at least 1x/month, and probably get takeout another 1x/month. The location is a little odd - back underneath & behind an office building - but from the full parking lot and constant in and out of takeout pick uppers, it's clear others agree that Shuhei is outstanding."
