A word from Shiso Sushi & Grill
Thank You for choosing Shiso sushi and grill, as we know you have many options. Our goal is to provide a great dining experience through our unique cuisine and great friendly service. We at Shiso are passionate about our space, food, and general daily opportunity to serve the public.
Our menu focuses on seasonal ingredients including sourcing from our own chef’s garden. Sonoma is well known for its long growing season and amazing local fish, produce and dairy making it the perfect backdrop for our creative chefs. Our menu is primarily focused on Japanese traditional fare with some influences on other parts of Asian. We were voted best new restaurant is Sonoma in 2006 and received two years in a row nod from the Michelin guide as well as several accolades such as in Sonoma Magazine, Sunset magazine and Napa/Sonoma magazine. We vacated our original location at 522 Broadway in 2009 to focus on a smaller location.

Diner Reviews
  • "This is a wonderful place right in the neighborhood! Thanks for great food and service always enjoy!"

  • "Average miso soup; black cod was dry and fibrous, not like the velvety smooth type you get at other Japanese restaurants. Tempura was the worst - the batter was like the cheap stuff you get on cheap calamari. Yuk!"

  • "Group of 6 locals who enjoy getting together for dinner. It is our third time there and food is, as always, delicious! Wished Shiso would have waived our corkage fee since we purchased 2 bottles..."

  • "Great sushi, I almost fell off my chair. My cousin and I didn't think Sushi would be as good as others had said in their reviews....we were wrong. Mac Daddy has to be one of my all time favorite sushi rolls. This coming from someone who lives in San Francisco and eats sushi at least once a week. I don't want to write this review because it will add to the wait next time I'm at the restaurant (which is in 1 day). Excellent sushi, the servers could NOT be any nicer. Really great restaurant, can't wait for the patio to open (and hopefully they'll run the little miniature golf out of that spot and expand in there. ~ Cheers to great sushi ! Mary"

  • "Really great sushi in an unassuming location in a strip mall. But don't be fooled, the chef serves up fresh and innovative sushi! Their private garden out back is the source of fresh ingredients that enhance their preparations. Order the omakase and let the chef prepare your meal for you - you won't be disappointed!"

  • "Love this restaurant! Exceptional Japanese food. Amazingly fresh and creative sushi!"

  • "We've been here several times and enjoyed it each time. It's not your run-of-the-mill Japanese. The tempura was feather light; the rolls innovative; and my black cod was imaginatively presented and melted in my mouth. The greens were delicious and mostly from their own mini-garden in the back. The wait staff is knowledgeable and attentive without being overbearing. The young lady (Mia) at our table overheard me telling my husband that I could go for another 1/2 glass of wine, not a whole one, and offered to bring me just that. "

  • "Shiso is a phenominal restaurant that is in an understated location within a shopping center. It should be in downtown Sonoma...but then one would not be able to get in. The chef is inspired and serves both traditional Japanese food including super fresh, and now sustainable fish in sushi and non-sushi fashion. It also has meat and choices that the one person in your group who hates Japanese food, will still love. They also have Omakase (chef selection) which they intelligently quantify in $$ (inexpensive to expensive)...which is to die for. All in all, the cuisine is the best blend of high quality food ingrediants, with a blend of foundational traditional Japanese food combined with creatively inspired Japanese evolved!"

  • "The food was great and the presentation, beautiful. The decor was very well done, especially for a very small place. I believe their location hampers the level of business. Also, Sonoma may not be a good place for such sophisticated food. Know they would be busier in Napa or even Santa Rosa. They really are excellent and should be much busier. "

  • "Great sushi place in sonoma, the chef has the kitchen running like a well oiled machine, don't miss the live scallop!"

  • "Love this local place that's hidden in the Lucky's shopping Center. Went to Shiso when it first opened on Broadway and found it again about a year ago. The food is fresh and the staff is lovely. Highly recommend. Try any specialty roll. "

  • "The fish was extremely fresh and there are some very innovative non-sushi options, too!"

  • "The menu was unique and delicious. Plates were great for sharing so we could try lots of different things. The flavors and textures were interesting and definitely innovative. Unfortunately, the service was a little off and left us feeling awkward a lot of the time. Still worth a try for the good food though"

  • "Our 4th visit since Feb and time to write a review! Delighted to have this gem in our backyard. Just a few minutes from the Square, don't be turned away by its shopping center location. Once inside, the ambiance is intimate and comfortable. We look forward to dining al fresco in the coming months-plans are underway to expand and create an outdoor dining space! Service fantastic & friendly. Fish & Food fresh (yes, same fish monger as Morimotos at a fraction of the cost!) creative, superlative, balanced, savory, and well we could go on.... On our most recent visit, loved the special soup of the day a lobster miso, scallop dish, & black cod... Great selection of infused sakes and their home blended tea is pure comfort!"

  • "Although we have always been fans of Japanese cuisine (I lived in Japan for 3 years and my husband traveled there regularly on business), it's been a bit of a challenge to find chefs (of any cuisine) who know how to put together a nutritious meal for us now that we're vegan - i.e. whole food, plant based. The search for a Japanese restaurant in our neighborhood is over! The chef went out of his way to put together a multi-course meal, that he paired with sake selections. It was one of the best meals we've ever had. Excellent!"

  • "Everytime I go here, my first thought is the Spider Roll. But there is so much on the menu I start with other things. Then I feel I would like just a little something more, and it is the spider roll."

  • "We are world traveled including Japan and live local. We took our visiting son and daughter-in with us to Shiso and all 4 of us rated it a 10....top of the mountain for not only excellent service but quality of freshness and taste. It was beautifully presented and such a delight for us to enjoy this gem of an experience right here in Sonoma. We look forward to a return visit."

  • "This is one of our two favorite restaurants as new residents of Sonoma. Sushi is always fresh and pristine. Specials are lovely and imaginative, especially the shirome carpaccio and the bluefin tartare. We especially like to let proprietor, Ed, select and prepare dishes for us - always a treat. Small, but excellent sake selection. I like to judge a restaurant by the small things, as well, and his miso soup is the best that I have had, ever. When we recommend Shiso to friends, it becomes one of their favorites, too. Don't let the shopping mall location deter you, decor is subdued and intimate and candlelit by evening - a very pleasant surprise that qualifies Shiso as a romantic, date restaurant. Relaxed, warm vibe."

  • "Several years ago we tried Shiso on Broadway after moving here from the Monterey area. The food and presentations were not up to the standards we were used to. After Ed moved to Maxwell Village we tried it again and were less than impressed. Move forward a couple of years and we tried it a few days ago. Tried ordering wine and half were not available. The tempura was salty and greasy not light like good tempura. My sushi was OK, but nothing to rave about. Apparently they are going to reinvent themselves into Asian Fusion. Hope it works out for them as I will never return."

  • "I brought my date to Shiso as I had heard a new top Sushi chef from Roka Akur become a partner there. What a great blend of hot prepared faire with incredibly fresh Siuhi presented well. I asked chef Iki to make recomendations and from start to finish each serving was excelent."

  • "Who knew we had such a treasure in our little town of Sonoma. Shiso is beautiful. We had reserved on Open Table and it was a good thing. The restaurant was packed. The only table available was the one with the Reserved sign for us! The menu is very different from a typical Japanese restaurant. Delightful seasonal dishes. Loved everything we ordered. The staff was perfect. Very attentive, but not overbearing. We will be back very soon. And they are open for Lunch!!!! Very exciting."

  • "After a bike ride in the area, we discovered Shiso Sushi purely by chance. Located in a shopping center tucked in an inconspicuous corner we were slightly skeptical. We arrived during happy hour and were immediately impressed with the ambiance, good service, nice menu selection and reasonable prices. I liked the quick service and freshness of the ingredients. My wife also enjoyed the decor. We returned a couple months later and found our first good experience wasn't a fluke and appreciated the same fine experience. Shiso Sushi will be a regular stop when we visit the Sonoma area."

  • "We tried Google Maps for directions (as we were visiting Sonoma) and ended up spending 15 minutes searching on foot for the restaurant in a shopping complex on Sonoma Plaza. Even though the name of the restaurant is on the complex directory, and Google sent us there repeatedly, the restaurant is actually a couple of miles away in a Lucky shopping center. The restaurant staff seemed pretty nonchalant about the mix up, said "we can't do anything about it" with a shrug. Frustrating way to start dinner. Happily, they held our reservation for us, although we were 15 minutes late. Thank for that! After all the hassle, an average sushi dinner."

  • "We sat at the bar and had the chef's special menau. Really fabulous mix of sushi and locally grown vegetables. Good value for the amount and quality of the food - we both left stuffed. Highly recommend."

  • "I grew up in Sonoma and have been skeptical about Shiso ever since I heard about it - but finally broke down and went this weekend. What a surprise! Food was on point, service was friendly and efficient, and the wine pour was generous! We'll definitely be back."

  • "They ran out of their unusual offerings like stuffed squash/zucchini blossoms, fried crab etc. @ 730pm on a Saturday night, how can you run out of product? Waitress was very helpful in talking to the chef about cooking some meat dishes, but his offers were too plain.. There was really no chicken or beef on the dinner menu. Unusual for a Japanese restaurant...then we realized the chef was not Asian..The fish was fresh but was cut too thin compared to what you get in the San Francisco &Peninsula area. Too bad they did not have alot of other non-seafood selections because we do order a lot of food. We are foodies and bring home the left overs. There was only 4 other diners in there, sad for a Sat night."

  • "They have great sushi, creative specials and are always welcome to make a change or special order. Everybody is friendly, the atmosphere is great and pricing is reasonable. They went above and beyond to make our anniversary special by sending us an appetizer plate with heart shape sushi :)"

  • "Shisos is as good as always. Ed is the perfect owner and chef. He and his staff continue to create a new dining experience with new specials and the fish is first class. Continue on Shisos; Sonomans should be standing in line, not walking around the plaza trying to figure out where to eat. Jerry & Arlene Clemens"

  • "After we ordered three appetizers which were really good, we left it to the chef to fill in the rest of our dinner and he didn't disappoint. Creatuve and delicious as how i I would described it. Desserts were really good and we splurged on them. Oh, and corkage fee was $10 per bottle. Highky recommended."

  • "We came here to try out sushi in Sonoma. Normally I would stay in the city. The chef was Japanese, which tells me the food is going to be good, and I was right. We ordered the 19-piece sashimi, salad, a spider roll, and an eel hand roll. All of them were fantastic. The 19-piece came with some exotic fish, like the halibut. Seafood was fresh. I would recommend coming back whenever I'm in the area."
