Reservation Note : Our Chef's Tasting Course starting at $100 per person is available with more than 24 hours advanced reservation only. When making your reservation, please specify your desired price range and any dietary restrictions or food allergies you may have.
For a party of 5 or more of Chef's Course reservation, your reservation is not confirmed until we contact you. Please inquire within for more information.
For parties of up to 4 people, please indicate with your reservation if you would like to sit at the Chef's Counter.
Even if there is no opening on OpenTable, we may be able to accommodate your seating.

  • "Shinbay never disappoints. This was our third visit this winter season. As usual we choose the Omakase menu and left it up the chief to select our dinner. First course was Fluke in a terrific Hot Oil Carpaccio. Next we had the Tsukuri Six(Seafood Bites), all expertly prepared. The Tuna Tartar is to die for and the other bites were scrumptious. Third course was Asari Clams with Japanese Mushrooms in a delicious mild broth. Fourth course was Washugyu Beef, Asparagus tips, Enoki mushroom that you sear on a hot plate. Finally we finished with a wonderful assortment of sushi. "We will be back!""

  • "We ordered the 5 course dinner. We were also given dessert (custard with seasonal berries... It was really good). So out of the 6 courses, all of them were incredible except for one. It was 3rd course. We received a really big bowl of lots of exotic mushrooms in a broth. The broth was really good. But the course was so big in this kind of dining experience. We enjoy mushrooms very much, but it was difficult to eat that much in one setting. That being said, every other course was perfect. So tasty and was presented beautifully!"

  • "We had the $100 chef's menu and found the dishes to be delicious, fresh and delightful. We enjoyed each course which the chef created especially for us and our server expained each dish in detail. We loved it and celebrated a birthday on the day we were there. We enjoyed some rare fish from Japan, a wonderful clam and Japanese mushroom (7 different varieties) dish cooked in saki and a delcious beef that we grilled ourselves. Recommend this restaurant to anyone wanting a unique experience and love to try new things."

  • "Chef Shinji Kurita is an artist! My wife and I went to Shinbay for the first time. We opted for the 5 course Chef's Course at the Chef's Counter. I would highly encourage everyone to do the same! The food was both beautiful and delicious! Each course was unique and wonderfully prepared. When we went on a Wednesday night, the restaurant was very peaceful and very comfortable. The staff were attentive without hovering and couldn't have been more gracious. One a scale from 1 to 5 starts, I would give it SIX!"

  • "It was a special evening, our 32 anniversary and we decided on ShinBay for dinner. We had the pleasure of dining at Chef's other restaurant at South Mountain but we had not been to this new location. We made reservations in advance for the counter so we could watch some of the preparation. We were contacted a few days before to confirm and to set our dinner choice. We decided on the 6 course tasting menu. We were not disappointed !! Each plate was better than the one before it, and the first plate was wonderful. Each bite is a culinary masterpiece visually plus in taste and execution. I can't wait to return again, and again."

  • "Best Japanese dining experience we've had. Located 'around back' with a small simple sign adds to the mystique of this great find for foodies. We had the 6 course tasting menu, each impeccably prepared, presented and served. The small dining area moves the staff hustle bustle into the kitchen and prep areas, giving you a real elegant and gracious feel. The detail in the presentation was impressive as were the distinctive variations of the dishes."

  • "Very good quality Japanese food. However, the quantity was too little for dinner and its price. Four of us had the $80 course for dinner, and when we finished, we were only half full. Not a good place to eat for family/friend's gathering or regular dinner. Suggest you increase the amount, or maybe include a rice/noodle dish."

  • "I had a fantastic dinner here this week. Food is artfully presented and tasted very very good. I sat at the chef's bar and since I was dining alone chatted with one of the young chefs while watching the master chef prepare much of the food. First dish was a trio of seafood dishes - tuna tartare, an oyster with tasty sauce, and whole fried shrimp. Second was Wagyu beef slices grilled at the table with dipping sauce. Third was 5 beautiful pieces of Nigiri - gorgeous - I felt like applauding. Prix Fixe - I had the three course which was delicious. There was a bonus dessert course of a custard-like dish with fruits that was also very good. It is not cheap but for the unusual quality and beautiful presentation, I thought it was fairly priced."

It was every thing we wanted, in fact we wanted more it was so good! The fish is beyond any other sushi foud in the city. Only the best, choicest selections of superb quality fish. Unbelievably delicious and fresh. What we truly loved is teh ambiance. It is getting harder and harder to find a quiet place to dine these days. Shin bay is elegant, refined. You can actually have a conversation without thumping loud annoying music. We loved our experience and we will be back often."

  • "Unfortunately the night we booked (and making the reservation sounded as if the restaurant would be packed) we were 2 of 6 people there for the whole night (a weekday) so admittedly we got zero atmosphere. We had been told over the phone to expect a slow, leisurely paced meal, but probably due to the lack of clientele - we were in and out in an hour and felt rushed. The food is beautifully presented, the service very good and most of the dishes of very high quality, some of the adventurous East/West, traditional/nouveau felt a little stretched."

There are only three dining options, all omakase just differing in the number of courses. Be aware that if you want the five-course option, they need 24 hour notice. This is the only downside of the restaurant. We would definitely return."

  • "This is a serious restaurant. Very exquisite, attention-to-detail in all aspects of the dining experience. I recommend the chef's counter tasting menus, where you can see the chefs at work. Despite the touchy nature of the cuisine, the staff is very pleasant and welcoming. They limit the number of diners per evening, which enables the pacing to be 100% perfect. This is all about exquisite, sophisticated tastes, although the centerpiece of the meals will consider some more homely options, such as soups, giant crustaceans you can cook yourself, waygu beef, etc. The sushi course and finally an egg custard and berries top off the evening. Ambiance here is great, and I LOVE LOVE the classical music."

  • "This was our third visit overall and our second this year and Shinbay continues to amaze us. Three of us dined on the $100 price fix chief's choice. We started with halibut sashimi in a ponzu and oil infused marinade that was melt in your mouth good. Then the 6 piece seafood platter with each piece a work of art. This was followed up with the Nigerian giant shrimp delicately prepared and served back in their shells. Next we had the wagu beef that you sear yourself. Finally the chief gave us a 5 piece nigiri platter with perhaps the best toro I have ever eaten. Dessert was their light and delicious fruit and custard. A five star meal worth every penny and we cant wait to return"

  • "Shin Bay was fabulous; the best Japanese food ever. I wanted to comment on the options so people can better know what to expect. We had five people: 3 had the 3 course and 2 had the 4 course. For those two 4th course dishes, we had one of each of the two 4th course options. The restaurant served the 4th course so that all of us could have some with one dish first and one 3rd, I think. The 3 course option isn't a ton of food and the 4th course was so good that I would recommend doing 4 if you can. Someone in another review I saw somewhere mentioned amuse bouche, but there were not any as part of our meal. Enjoy!"

  • "Shin Bay is not for everyone, but wow is it good. If big portions are important, or if you want a sushi roll, go somewhere else. But, if you want a nice seasonal selection of really good raw fish and you are OK with leaving the choice to the chef, then Shin Bay is wonderful. My advice is to select the $100 or $130 meals and make reservations 24 hours or more in advance."
