Diner Reviews
  • "The place makes good on its title. Soft shell crab was a gem of a dish; king crab legs were good but Boston has one up on them. Lobster was excellent and overall experience above satisfactory."

  • "Being from MD, we were surprised to find a seafood friendly spot of quality in Chicago. Additionally, our server Eric was so attentive and flowing with what we look for in a restaurant, "anticipatory customer service". Worth a revisit during our next trip!"

  • "I had a conference in the area and took a group of business associates to dinner @ Shaw's. It had been a couple of years since I last dined there. I was happy to see the food quality was still there and everyone enjoyed their meals."

  • "I have been here many times and taking out of town family out for fun. You can't go wrong here. I am as picky about the atmosphere as the food. Oysters....great as always. Clam chowder....excellent. We also had the Tuna Tartar and spicy tuna roll sushi. One person in our group With Pouilly- Fuisse bottle of French chardonnay. It was all amazing. So that should tell you about the atmosphere.....retro which in my mind is the best."

  • "The food, as always, was outstanding. Some service issues however: 1. The host kept trying to put couples (like ourselves) in a cramped table with a large party next door (he didn't say no when I asked for another table but he did give me "the face") 2. We told the waiter my husband needed gluten free foods. He ordered a salad and it came full of croutons-we sent it back without any problems."

  • "This place is just plain awesome. You enter to a jazz classy surrounding with friendly hostess that appoint you a electronic device that buzz when your reservation is ready if any delay. You can go have a drink to the bar with a tv or 2 if you wanna watch a ball game Then when its ready they bring you to the tables side again with red comfy leather seats. The room has romantic/old school look and feel. Music is also nice. food and waiting was also prompt and omg was it good. This open table last minute reservation was superb and it made our day. One of the best clam chowder we've had and the big crab legs were excellent and already half opened so i didnt even have to use the clamps. Expensive but not out of reach at all. Well worth it!"

  • "We are "old timers" at Shaw's & have been going there since the '80's. The fresh fish selections are really fresh. The halibut and salmon were perfectly cooked. The sides are always good. I just wish I had room for dessert!"

  • "I live out of town, but try and go to Shaw's for Sunday brunch when given the opportunity. We always start with a Bloody Mary and "doctor" it up ourselves at the bar. The food was as good this time as it's ever been, especially enjoying the cold seafood bar with shrimp, crab legs and sushi. The breakfast bacon was amazing along with other breakfast items...I wasn't even able to make it to the waffle and omelet bar. I finished with steamed crab legs, a slice of beef tenderloin, and an amazing cup of lobster bisque. My only complaint at all was our table was at the entrance of a room, and thus very busy with customers and servers jostling by the table...try and get a table if possible back in the room. All in all, a great experience!"

  • "Expensive but worth every penny! We will definitely go back the next time were in Chicago."

  • "The seafood was great. As good as any that I've eaten on any coast. I had grilled halibut and my wife had crab cakes. I will definitely go back. It is a little noisy and crowded, therefore I would not call it an intimate dining experience. But sit back and enjoy the food along with your fellow diners."

  • "We had a delicious, fresh dinner here. Lovely wines, all varieties of fish and seafood, prepped in a variety of manners: raw, broiled, baked or sauted. variety of sauces and dips. relaxed timing and lots of good fun!"

  • "Needed a place to have dinner with my daughter to celebrate a successful summer internship in Chicago. I found Shaws Crab House on Trip Advisor and was so very glad I chose it ! Our dinner was fabulous and our waitress was wonderful!!! Will definitely return if I am ever in Chicago again! We both had a combination dinner of Fillet, Shrimp & Scallops. The fillet melted in our mouths and both the shrimp & scallops were delicious!"

  • "We had a great dinner at Shaw's, the food was very good, particularly the lobster bisque. The seating was a little tight between tables, which is our only complaint about the experience. Our server was fantastic and very helpful. We will definitely come back."

  • "We are New England residents and are never sure we can get good seafood "inland" The seafood rivaled anything we can get along the water in Massachusetts. I chose the Surf and Surf - 8 oz lobster tail and Red Crab legs Fresh, sweet and more food than I could eat. So happy Shaw's war recommended to us."

  • "it is a very classic USA restaurant of good leve: very busy with many customers, solid appearence and pretty good food (the clamchowder, that I like anyhow, was extremely good as well as the tuna fish, among the rest). The service is reasonable, but the waiter was more a kind of routine person without any idea about the wine questions I was asing him. A comment, more for opentable than about the restaurant: your price indications are by far underestimating the actual cost: we paid 215 $ for 2 starters, 2 entrées (no crabs nor lobsters), and a bottle of medium wine; not close to the $$$ note."

  • "My husband and I went here for our last night in Chicago while on vacation. We ordered the crab spring rolls, which were tasty. I had the Surf and Surf (lobster tail and Alaskan king crab legs). The restaurant even cracked my crab legs for me since I have issues with my hand - I thought that was a nice touch. My husband had the Surf and Turf (Filet mignon and lobster tail). Dinner was outstanding. Sides are a la carte - we had the mashed potatoes and baked potato. For dessert, I had the peach cobbler which was very nice. At the end we left stuffed but it was good. Please note it's a pricey meal. Dinner cost us north of $200."

  • "Food was outstanding as always. Clam chowder is my favorite. My halibut was cooked with a delicious sauce. Our waitress was attentive but not annoying. Dessert was complimentary. A nice touch after a delicious meal. I love to come here when we visit Chicago. It never disappoints whether there are two of us or ten."

  • "Food was nothing special for what it cost. Soft shelled crab was a bit chewy."

  • "I had large group and Shaw's handled it expertly. Appetizer trays of hot and cold seafood items were superb, from the oysters Rockefeller to the lobsters that topped off the presentation. Very attentive and prompt young waiter added to the experience. We all had various fish entrees and everyone was pleased."

  • "When I visit Chicago, my friends like to meet me here for lunch. This was my third visit in 2014, and the staff has two strikes. I ordered the breadcrumb and parmesan encrusted wall-eye. I would never order this again. It was grilled/sauteed, but there was no carmelization. No color equals no flavor. In June, I had the Copper River salmon-superb! Last January, I ordered another well-eye preparation which suffered from the same problem Living in Boston, i crave good fresh-water fish, and nothing tops a wall-eye. Unfortunately, the cooks here do not know how to properly prepare one."

  • "We enjoyed a very pleasant meal at Shaw's. My wife's scallops were excellent. My walleye was fine, but not as good as the scallops. The lobster bisque was only average. My wife enjoyed the crabcake appetizer, but found it perhaps too filling. Altogether, we would rate our dining experience at Shaw's as 8.5 out of 10. We'll definitely keep Shaw's on our list of standby restaurants in Chiciag."

  • "What a classic seafood place! Outstanding food, service and wine list. We shRed oysters, crab cakes and all the soups. Each was excellent. I had the grouper, which was fresh and well prepared. Sides were creamed spinach and corn pudding. Great overall place."

  • "We went an hour before our dinner reservation in order to take advantage of the 50% off oysters at the Oyster Bar. Very lively, bright and energetic ambiance in the Oyster Bar. Not all oysters are 50% off - they pre-select two types of oysters for the special, usually one east coast and one west coast. The oysters come on a bed of ice and were really tasty! When we crossed over to the dining room, the ambiance was definitely different - very classic steakhouse feel, dark/candlelit lighting and servers in formal dress. Service was very attentive and the food was great."

  • "The Oyster Bar has a lively ambience. Take an oyster sample platter or some other starter at the bar and then move to the restaurant for the entrees. Or just hang out in the bar for the whole dinner. Any choice is a good one. Staff is friendly and knowledgable. Nice experience for a more special evening."

  • "My girlfriend and I made dinner reservations for 7 pm and when we arrived we had a short wait for our table so we sat at the oyster bar for a cocktail- we never left! The room was full of energy and had a small band playing. We dined at the bar and had a fantastic time. Server was exceptional and the food-- fantastic. We sampled many different seafood dishes and I can honestly say probably the best steak ive ever had!"

  • "We dined at Shaw's on Sunday night (8/10) -- I was part of group of six. This is the first time that this group had gotten together in over 20 years so we had a lot to talk about. We never felt rushed -- the waitress was patient and made some great recommendations. All of us were happy with our food and service. It was a great night."

  • "Lake Superior Walleye with garlic-parmesan crust and cooked tomatoes sounded interesting and was recommended by our waiter. Under-cooked fish with basically no flavor. Walleye at a small-town bar fish fry has tasted better. I could not detect any garlic or parmesan. The tomatoes added nothing. Just cooked and sliced. Two nights later I had salmon at a local restaurant. Fabulous sauce and great taste at half the price. At least this means that my taste buds have not died. Food still tastes good when it's prepared properly."

  • "My son is a gourmet and has worked as a chef. He declared Shaw's the best Sunday brunch buffet he's ever had. He apologized to our waiter because we spent over two hours at our table and the waiter said they've had people spend five hours at brunch!"
