A word from Shanik
Shanik is a modern Indian restaurant that serves our personal Indian cuisine which is creative and daring, yet comforting. We invite our customers into a version of India that is not intimidating, cliché, or a rehashing of what is traditionally marketed as Indian. Our restaurant is the same version of Indian that Meeru is: North American in lifestyle and attitude, while rooted in Indian heritage and cuisine. We take pride in making our own yogurt, paneer and ghee, as well as; sifting, grinding, and roasting our spices in-house. Our open kitchen is designed specifically so our diners can experience the warmth of our cooks, and signifies a sharing of heats.Continued

Diner Reviews
  • "The food was very good, but at three times the price of a typical Indian restaurant, I was not impressed. The service was okay, but we kept having to remind the waiter to bring the next glass of the wine flight. "

  • "Well prepared and conceived contemporary Indian food. Nice decor. Thoughtful service."

  • "Great atmosphere and deco! The service was alright. The menu is unique for and Indian restaurant. Food was good, lamb perfectly cooked, but I felt it all lacked some flavor. Overall, I had a great time though and would def recommend it to friends and go back to try some other dishes! "

  • "Little expensive but good food. The funny thing is i paid way less in kastoori and the food was awesome plus way bigger portion. I wouldn't recommend it if you want to have your belly full with less money and awesome food. go to kastoori."

  • "Based on her experience with those places who go heavy on the cream, my wife has not been a fan of Indian food . However she was willing to give Shanik a try and was delighted by the experience as were our friends, who have tried lots of different Indian places as one of them is a vegetarian. For our diner everything other than the salmon dish was perfect. The sauce with the salmon dish was amazing, and it was great pity that the salmon itself was very dry, probably overcooked Coho. I love rice pudding and have tried it all over the world and this one was exceptional. Our friends have tried Gulab Jamun in many places and rated this the best ever."

  • "I made a reservation at Shanik for my birthday....just my wife and I on a Friday evening. We sampled the lamb popsicles and I could have eaten two more orders.....the meat fell right off the bone! The wait staff was chill but prompt and knowledgable."

  • "Decided to try Shanik for Seattle Restaurant Week, as I'd heard positive things. The entrees (and chai) were good, and the decor was lovely. Appetizers and desserts were so-so. We didn't see our server for a full 30 minutes after finishing our entrees, and we hadn't even ordered dessert yet. We were there nearly two hours, most of that waiting (to order, for our next course, for our check, etc.). I can't help but wonder whether we were treated that way because we ordered off the SRW menu; I also wonder whether we received normal-size portions or if they were smaller for SRW (if normal, I'm sure glad we didn't pay full price ... $6 for a golf-ball-size gulab jamun?!). Sadly, I'll probably never know, because I don't plan to return."

  • "A breath of fresh air in a neighborhood invaded by steel beams and flat concrete. The restaurant itself is pleasant, large sunny windows, the service prompt and sweet, and the food/beverage offerings well balanced. Having long lived in Asia, we found all the dishes very fresh, exploding with flavor but, here and there, a bit timid nevertheless. Our request for "some very hot spices or condiments" resulted in a little scoop of green chillies (which we did use gratefully!!!). Perhaps there was a "very spicy" dish on the menu, and we failed to notice it. We'll happily go back (loved the insect sauce), for the freshness of ingredients is inescapable. Shanik is on to something very fine, and should keeps going ever more adventurously."

  • "I am a real fan of Indian food. This is the best Indian restaurant I've ever been to outside of India. The spices bring out the flavors of the food, rather than, as in many Indian restaurants, covering up the flavors."

  • "We are more used to eating in Vancouver at Vij's, which is excellent, and thought this would be similar. It is not as good overall, and uneven: one dish we had this time was interesting and well executed. The other was not well thought out, and quite disappointing. On a previous visit, we had a similar experience, and the naan tasted as if it had come from a package. Pretty place with good service, but they need to make sure all their dishes are well done."

  • "Tired of the same old Indian restaurant selections of cauliflower peas and potatoes? Interested in tantalizing your taste buds with an infusion of cumin, cardamon, quinoa and kale? Then, get yourself to Shanik. This is a hot spot in the South Lake Union neighborhood that Paul Allen has infused with mega bucks to attract Amazon and other high techies with mega bucks to spend on dining. But us regular Seattleites can benefit as well from a periodic visit to Shanik. It's pricey but that's what leftovers are all about!"

  • "An amazing restaurant! The food is unlike anything I've had anywhere else (except Vig's in Vancouver Canada, which is owned by husband of the person who owns Shanik). It's a great place to go with a bunch of people and just share many plates! The service is super friendly as well!!"

  • "The food is good but not outstanding. Very expensive for what you get - the $16 vegetable curry had 4 pieces of cauliflower, 2 pieces of jackfruit and probably one leaf of kale. Saag paneer ($24) had 4 dice size pieces of paneer and a very strange texture. The daal that came with it was very good. They should offer it as an appetizer. Also had the lamb lollypops which were very tasty but lacked lamb flavor. Had to flag the server down and request rice and raita several times. Table next to us was taking flash photography with a professional camera all through dinner which was very annoying. It would have been nice if the restaurant had stepped in or checked on us. I was hoping for a restaurant like Rassika in DC, but this is not that."

  • "Shanik is where I would go treat my guests if they enjoy Indian food. They elevate regular Indian food to a different level. Shanik's menu is small so they can better control the food quality. The only issue is that after having eaten there 6 times, I feel like I can stop going for a while now since there are no new dishes to try and I have no interest eating the same things over and over again. In comparison to its sister restaurant in Vancouver (Vij's), Shanik still lacks the variety of specialty dishes and the restaurant itself lacks a personable owner/host to establish that personal touch. As good as they already are, I still do not consider the food memorable. That being said, it is definitely worth a try at least once or twice."

  • "Just a really great place. Some of the cuisine is not "authentic" but still delicious. Half the menu is vegetarian, which make it a lovely choice for eating healthy while going out to a very nice place for a special meal. I'll be bringing lots of friends back here."

  • "I went to Shanik with a lot of expectation, especially after having been to Vijs so many times and was very disappointed. The food was lower than standard level, lot of garam masala and all the courses seem to have the same garam flavor masala taste. the dishes seemed different but wasn't impressed with any. I am so truely In love with Vijs since they have a different non Indian unique cuisine and the flavours are awesome. Even the cocktails are so different and catching. definitely, Shabik is not up to Vijs standard and wouldn't recommend this place to anyone."

  • "Not your traditional Indian cuisine... more of an Indian-fusion approach. The service was great, but the food and drinks were considerably overpriced. No parking."

  • "As busy parents of 3 little ones, my husband & I enjoyed a date night dinner and the relaxed vibe at Shanik last Saturday night. Great service and food is well-prepared and presented. Loved the complimentary housemade chai...my favorite part of the night! Will definitely go back again and will recommend to others."

  • "Shanik offered a wonderful range of incredibly flavorful options. The staff was very helpful and knowledgable about specifics of the menu. Our group of four had some diet restrictions and the staff was very helpful in letting us know what we could and could not order as well as what substitutes could be made. We completely over ordered and were warned that we had done so. We were very happy to take home left overs. I will definitely be returning and am so thankful they take reservations."

  • "Flavors were clean and delicious. We did well to snack before coming, but even so, we left still hungry. The excellent server supplied ample (and fresh) naan as we requested it, but that will only take you so far. To be fair we ordered off the Dine Around Seattle menu, which may be differently sized than off the regualr menu, but still~"

  • "We dine out often and I can't recall the last time I was more disappointed by the service during dinner. When we first arrived, our reservation wasn't ready and so we went to sit at the bar and wait for the table and the rest of our party who were running late. About 6 or so minutes later our friends wander into the bar telling us that they were told at the front that they were the first to arrive. The bartender came and brought waters but we didn't see him again before our table came up. Things didn't improve. Initially, waiter was too available and then not available enough, even forgetting to bring my second glass of wine from the flight I ordered, Sadly, we probably will just go to Roti next time, better service and half the price."

  • "parked outside. We had been looking forward to this trip ever since Vij told us his wife opened a clone in Seattle. Given Vij's standard, we are left a little disappointed. Lunch was good, but the food did not carry the excitement of Vij's. I guess the place needs Vij's watchful eye, at least until it acquires its own rhythm."

  • "I went in with a group of 4 for dine around. We ordered the dine around menu and then a myriad of additional dishes. The wait staff was spot on. The all female crew in the kitchen was impressive and inspiring. My group consisted of current and former Art Institute of Seattle culinary students. We were graciously offered a tour of the kitchen. Phenomenal evening!"

  • "Not a typical Indian restaurant! Amazingly good food, you must try the crickets... don't be afraid they are very healthy and the flatbread style preparation is absolutely delicious!"

  • "I love Vijs in Vancouver, BC and have been wanting to try Shanik. 5 of us dined during the Dine Around Seattle March promo. The food was excellent and a great value with the additional $15 wine flight pairing with each course. The cricket appetizer was tasty, and I appreciate the menu creativity. The cauliflower curry was terrific. Service was pleasant and efficient. Also, really LOVE the round tables; it makes group dining very convivial when can all converse together rather than just with the people next to you."

  • "The food overall is very good...but I continue to go back especially for the lamb rib chop lollipops! They are sensational. I often order this main course as an appetizer when with larger groups to make sure everyone get's a taste! We were recently there with a large party to celebrate a special occasion, 11 people, and the service was really attentive & fantastic. We brought in 6 bottles of wine given the party size and the cork fee was more than usual - $25 / bottle. They will wave a cork fee (1:1) for one of your own bottles if you purchase a bottle of wine. Great wine selection, especially the medium bodied reds, that are excellent choices with spicy flavors. The full bodied reds overpower the spice flavors. Great spot!"

  • "We really appreciated how the staff took care of us. Having different servers through out the meal gave us a connection with the restaurant. Amazing how they knew what was needed. Great food and presentations. Lovely evening, perfect energy surrounding us as we celebrated our 32nd wedding Anniversary. Thanks."

  • "We had one dish that had a terrible after taste, so we didn't eat it and told the waitress, but were charged anyway. Also got the swag paneer with Dahl - it tasted good, but was $25 for basic Indian food that you can get any where. The appetizers were delicious and unique."

  • "i have eaten at Shanik 6-7 times and I have never been disappointed. The selection for people with various dietary issues (I'm gluten free, and I have many friends who are vegetarian) is fantastic. The Staff is very attentive, food is fast and often they are circulating free bites and chai. My only complaint is that the seating if you are just 2 people dining is quite cramped, even if you make a reservation. When I come with groups of 4 or more typically you end up with more privacy."

  • "Have always meant to get here - Dine Around Seattle provided the excuse. And it was well worth it. Food was great, staff very attentive without being overwhelming. Food was GREAT. Some was picey, but you can ask for a complimentary side of Raita (which was wonderful on it's own). The entrees came with Pilaf rice that smelled and tasted wonderful, and divine Nan. I know, it sounds like I'm coo'ing - I am. Sometimes I find Restaurant Week or Dine Around Seattle prompt restaurants to go onthe cheap, rather than see it as a way to invite in new diners. Well Shaik, you did it right!"

  • "The food at Shanik has incredible, complex flavors. Even the spiciest dishes have many layers of flavors as you eat them. The service is excellent and our waitress was very good at explaining the various dishes. There are a couple typical Indian dishes on the menu, but they were done differently than we had had them before. The somosas, for example were were excellent and better than many we have tried. There are also a number of more inventive dishes some of which we tried. Everything was very good."

  • "Everyone in our party of 5 was sorely disappointed with the food. The high quality of ingredients used was evident but the taste of the food was nothing to write home about. We've had much tastier Indian food at a fraction of the cost in Seattle. I have to commend Shanik for the complimentary chai, rice and nan, even though they weren't very good (chai was too sweet, the rice was not light and fluffy, the nan too heavy in texture). The acoustics of the space was horrible and it was a strain trying to hear the person across the table. Our waitress was perfectly attentive, but Shanik was an all-round disappointing dining experience."

  • "Unlike many Indian restaurants, here the spices bring out the flavor of the other ingredients, rather than covering them up."
