Diner Reviews
  • "When we eat at a restaurant for two and have 2 entrees, 2 drinks, and an appetizer i don't usually spend a $ amount equal to my monthly college loan payments. i understand the view and ambiance is incredible but if im paying $200 for decent food its a little upsetting. The appearance on th food was great, order kung pao and it looked delicious. Took my first bite and I thought it was a Pf changs frozen dinner. Anyways, it would,be optimal to grab a drink there and take in the Hancock."

  • "First of all, I am a SHANGHAINESE who's born and grew up in Shanghai. After two years living in Chicago, finishing grad school and a few month of work, I brought my girlfriend, who's also from Shanghai, to this place for her birthday. I didn't believe I will be served traditional Chinese food, and I wasn't wrong. The food is not ordinary food that you can get from Chinatown for one-fourth of the check. We had foie gras duck dumpling, peking duck salad (not a real peking duck though), lamb rack, and sea bass. Every dish is AWESOME. The portion is big enough to feed more than one, and they are delicious. Together with two signature cocktails and service is less than $200 and we are very happy about it. Definitely recommended."

  • "The Peninsula is the pinnacle of hospitality and graciousness. From the moment you arrive everyone is keyed into offering top-line service. On my niece's 21st birthday we celebrated at the Shanghai Terrace first with stellar cocktails accompanied by bar snacks- wasabi peas, pretzels, nuts, and crackers. They have an imaginative refreshing beverage list with virgin versions also. The bellman brought up our presents and cake to the restaurant. The valet loaded a wheel-chair into the trunk helping everyone out of our vehicle. The doormen held both doors open. We loved having time out on the Terrace in the sun and dining inside on the best Chinese Food. We started with a variety of delectable dim sun. Their home made hot sauce was wonderful."

  • "We went to dinner at the Shanghai Terrace with a group of 4. The menu was very deep and varied. The dim sum choices were numerous. We tried several and shared....the portions were perfect for sharing with a group of 4. Service was a bit slow at times but that was forgiven by our group as this is a place for a leisurely dinner."

  • "Overall it was an amazing experience dining at Shanghai Terrace. The food was delicious and really liked the ambience. The service spectacular. Even my 2 year old was loving it. He got so many gifts to take home. Would highly recommend this place for a great dining experience."

  • "The dining room is long and narrow. A very large party in the adjacent room--separated by wooden screens--was quite loud. The volume was too loud simply because of the number of people and open design---not because the party was inappropriate. The terrace seemed nice. We enjoyed the foie gras and duck buns, the fried rice, sea bass, and the beef brisket casserole. The Shanghai noodles were ok, but too spicy for our taste. We did not anticipate the peppers listed on the menu to be jalapenos. Service was confusing. We had at least four different people offer water, order taking, etc. As a result, we received the wrong casserole dish at first. Overall, we enjoyed the dinner. However, guests have to created their own ambiance."

  • "Interesting euro twist on Classic Chinese dishes. Excellent service though the indoor seating is a bit odd. Felt like I was in the foyer of the restaurant. Only place in Chicago that I know of that sells Beijing duck(not roast or BBQ duck). Will try the three dishes next time( duck prix fixe), but wanted to pick n choose from menu."

  • "The cocktails and food were wonderful and very creative. They gave us a free dessert for our anniversary as well!"

  • "This is the most unique Chinese restaurant that I have ever been to. It is located on the top of the Peninsula Hotel Chicago with an outside garden. The inside decor is all from China. Right from the beginning I was greeted very politely by the host who brought me to my table. The tableware was very elegant and the food was well prepared."

  • "If you eat Chineese in San Francisco, Vegas or most anywhere you would know that Peaking duck is not worth $144.00 for two. They don't and with a limited menu only go there for the garden and not the food or value."

  • "The dim sum was wonderful! The service was attentive. It was a cold and rainy evening so we were inside. I'd love to try a meal on the terrace next time!"

  • "The service alone could have catapulted Shanghai Terrace into 5 star range. Very attentive staff, polite and helpful hosts. The food itself was excellent. High quality, delicious and perfectly seasoned. I especially enjoyed the Kung Pao Chicken and the Chinese Fried Yam Fritters at our table, but everything was really great!"

  • "Okay, you can't get much better than this on a lovely Sat. afternoon in Chicago -- the dim sum was to die for, the wait staff -- impeccable, the drinks -- yum, yum. We were looking for a place to eat outdoors & this got us off the noisy streets -- all with a view of the neighboring buildings and sky."

  • "This was our second visit to Shanghai Terrace. Our first experience was over the top delicious, and we were not at all disappointed the second time around. The food was exceptional, the service was spot on, efficient and courteous. Our waiter gave us good recommendations when we asked for them. We will return as soon as we can!"

  • "I've been dining on and off at Shanghai Terrace for several years. The food used to be superb. It's still very good but not as good as it used to be. The service is good but not as quick or excellent as it used to be. However, Shanghai Terrace is still far better than most restaurants you will find. The appetizers were not very good. We had the mussels which were chewy and not fresh. The vegetarian goose was mediocre at best. The pan fired Chilean sea bass was very good but not as fresh as one would hope at these prices. The kung pao tofu was over steamed but flavorful, yet the accompanying vegetables were undercooked and tough. The deserts were outstanding--no reservations here. "

  • "I chose Shanghai Terrace as my special birthday dinner spot. Service was flawless. We had not said anything about my birthday, but the service team must have overheard us, and they brought a beautiful chocolate, mousse cake, with Chinese words made with chocolate on the plate that probably said Happy Birthday. It was delicious, and again the service was amazing. The food. We ordered: Spicy Beef Pot Stickers, Golden Shrimp, Peking Duck (served family style to us before other entrees,) Prawn Kung Pao, Rack of Lamb, Shredded Beef Stir-Fry, and Seasonal Vegetables. We shared everything, loved everything, and all agreed that it was without question the best Chinese food we have ever had. Totally memorable!"

  • "This is our favorite Chinese restaurant. We at here about a year ago and ordered similar dishes since we liked it so well. The golden shrimp is very light and flavorful. Also, we ordered the crispy duck, shanghai fried noodle, and seasonal jade vegetables. All of the entrees were extremely high quality and well prepared. We wished we knew of a similar high quality Chinese restaurant at home. Finally, the service is very attentive but not intrusive. As a Peninsula hotel restaurant it fits very well into their offerings of high quality food and service. We plan to return again."

  • "Shanghai Terrace is one of my favorite restaurants. High-end Asian cuisine in authentic decor housed in the elegant Peninsula Hotel. They accommodated my hearing disability that I identified in my OpenTable reservation including a quieter table and a server who knew to both look at me to lipread and to be patient to repeat. Peking Duck was excellent as was the kung pao prawns and tofu dishes. The dinner was a wonderful setting to meet up for a 34-year old high school reunion between old friends. Shanghai Terrace was perfect. "

  • "Overall my experience was what I wanted out of a restaurant at the Peninsula Hotel. Extremely courteous staff that almost knew what you needed before you asked, fantastic recommendations for food and drinks by our server, and the rught amount of intimacy withoutfeeling ssecluded. Unfortunately I felt there was only so much you could do with Chinese Food to make me want to label Shanghai Terrace a "must dine at" restaurant. I would definitely come back for the outdoor patio, but probably only for a special occasion. I believe the staff with their impeccable quality of service was what really stood out for me."

  • "My husband and I loved our dinner at Shanghai Terrace. The food was excellent, the wait staff extremely attentive and helpful. The portions were generous and not too pricey. We will certainly dine here again if we ever make it back to Chicago."

  • "Shanghai Terrace is on a par with the best restaurants I experienced in Shanghai. The food is exquisitely prepared and the menu is a carefully and expertly curated selection of fascinating options. The service is flawless. Great place for friends and for business colleagues to enjoy and converse."

  • "Good food, service, ambience, creative menu and high end pricing but worth it. However they told us they validate parking which we assume meant no cost. We were surprise to be hit with a $32 fee for an hour and one half parking. It turns out the "validation" is a $10 discount. After spending $180 on dinner and drinks I did not expect to have to pay $32 for parking. If I knew I would have parked at one of the meter spaces for $4."

  • "Shanghai Terrace is the perfect, relaxed setting for a romantic dinner. Everything that we had chosen to eat that night was cooked to perfection. My partner who is not a seafood eater or in particular a shrimp eater went crazy over the Golden Shrimp and my Kung Pao Prawns. The food is just enough to make you comfortably full and to make the experience very pleasant. The servers were more than ready - they knew exactly when we needed something and more times than not we didn't even need to say what what we needed because they came with it in hand. For instance, my partner was eating his marinated chicken but he could continue with the chopsticks but before I could turn around and ask a server for silverware they were already at our table."

  • "Being an interior designer, I appreciated the decor and lighting though the ceiling fixtures were not in keeping with the interior. We enjoyed the service and presentation - it was a long dinner after a long day of meetings, but nice. My client loved her entree, I liked mine, but wasn't wowed with it. Skip the brulee and stick with the main courses."

  • "I can't believe the raves this restaurant is getting on Open Table. Seriously, save the $300+ you will probably spend at this mediocre tourist trap and order Chinese from your local neighborhood haunt. It's bound to be better than what ER experienced. Seriously. Just bad."

  • "My boyfriend and I wanted to splurge for Valentine's Day. I had to contact the host twice to let him know we were running behind, and offered to give up our reservation if necessary, but they held a table for us, which we greatly appreciated. My boyfriend had the three course peking duck and I had a lobster soup and veggie entrée. Everything was well prepared and unique. But what made this worth the price tag was the service: discreet and unassuming but there wasn't a moment when someone wasn't a few feet away to tend to our every need. It is the spa version of a dining experience. We will definitely return."
