Diner Reviews
  • "Overall my experience was what I wanted out of a restaurant at the Peninsula Hotel. Extremely courteous staff that almost knew what you needed before you asked, fantastic recommendations for food and drinks by our server, and the rught amount of intimacy withoutfeeling ssecluded. Unfortunately I felt there was only so much you could do with Chinese Food to make me want to label Shanghai Terrace a "must dine at" restaurant. I would definitely come back for the outdoor patio, but probably only for a special occasion. I believe the staff with their impeccable quality of service was what really stood out for me."

  • "This is the second time we have been there. If I talked about each part that was wonderful, you would get bored. It is expensive and worth it."

  • "My husband and I loved our dinner at Shanghai Terrace. The food was excellent, the wait staff extremely attentive and helpful. The portions were generous and not too pricey. We will certainly dine here again if we ever make it back to Chicago."

  • "Shanghai Terrace is on a par with the best restaurants I experienced in Shanghai. The food is exquisitely prepared and the menu is a carefully and expertly curated selection of fascinating options. The service is flawless. Great place for friends and for business colleagues to enjoy and converse."

  • "Good food, service, ambience, creative menu and high end pricing but worth it. However they told us they validate parking which we assume meant no cost. We were surprise to be hit with a $32 fee for an hour and one half parking. It turns out the "validation" is a $10 discount. After spending $180 on dinner and drinks I did not expect to have to pay $32 for parking. If I knew I would have parked at one of the meter spaces for $4."

  • "Shanghai Terrace is the perfect, relaxed setting for a romantic dinner. Everything that we had chosen to eat that night was cooked to perfection. My partner who is not a seafood eater or in particular a shrimp eater went crazy over the Golden Shrimp and my Kung Pao Prawns. The food is just enough to make you comfortably full and to make the experience very pleasant. The servers were more than ready - they knew exactly when we needed something and more times than not we didn't even need to say what what we needed because they came with it in hand. For instance, my partner was eating his marinated chicken but he could continue with the chopsticks but before I could turn around and ask a server for silverware they were already at our table."

  • "Being an interior designer, I appreciated the decor and lighting though the ceiling fixtures were not in keeping with the interior. We enjoyed the service and presentation - it was a long dinner after a long day of meetings, but nice. My client loved her entree, I liked mine, but wasn't wowed with it. Skip the brulee and stick with the main courses."

  • "Service was outstanding. The food was excellent with an excellent presentation as well. And the mango desert was to die for."

  • "I can't believe the raves this restaurant is getting on Open Table. Seriously, save the $300+ you will probably spend at this mediocre tourist trap and order Chinese from your local neighborhood haunt. It's bound to be better than what ER experienced. Seriously. Just bad."

  • "My boyfriend and I wanted to splurge for Valentine's Day. I had to contact the host twice to let him know we were running behind, and offered to give up our reservation if necessary, but they held a table for us, which we greatly appreciated. My boyfriend had the three course peking duck and I had a lobster soup and veggie entrée. Everything was well prepared and unique. But what made this worth the price tag was the service: discreet and unassuming but there wasn't a moment when someone wasn't a few feet away to tend to our every need. It is the spa version of a dining experience. We will definitely return."

  • "Best Chinese food I have ever eaten. My beef and broccoli may sound mundane but it was perfectly cooked and seasoned filet mignon with Chinese broccoli. My husband thought the kung pao chicken was too dry and too spicy but he loved his hot and sour soup. We did not have dessert. The space is narrow and cozy and the Asian waitresses were wonderful."

  • "Few places have impressed us as much as Shanghai for its mastery of food and service. From Tofu to special desserts, everything that was served was excellent. Indeed, one of the nicest and most pleasant dining experiences that we've ever had. Two appetizers, two main courses, and two desserts took us 2 1/2 hours to consume. A helpful and delightful wait person attended us with professionalism and a warm smile throughout. Flavors were excellent. We could find no fault with this outstanding restaurant."

  • "We loved this place! I don't know that I would recommend bringing children, however they did have a kids menu from one of the other restaurants in the hotel. The food and service are terrific. If you are open to unique foods, you must try this. Get the dim sum so you can share multiple items and don't forget the vegetable dumplings!"

  • "Really enjoyed our meal here, the food was cooked to perfection and the service was excellent. Didn't love the layout of the restaurant, it was a bit open for my taste, but luckily it wasn't too loud."

  • "This is a great restaurant with a really a high class ambience that has chic Chinese decor. Service was prompt and attentive and food was delicious. Food reminded me of REAL Chinese food which was fantastic and reminded me of my mother's home cooking. Not only was Chinese flavor fully integrated within the menu, Shanghai Terrace does a wonderful job with creating fusion items (aka the foie gras dumplings and jasmine creme brulee were amazing). I know I'm writing my review really late (9 months from dining experience), but the fact that I can still remember my dining experience and what I ordered is a true indicator of how great this place is. You will not be disappointed!"

  • "A local favorite of ours in the Peninsula Hotel. Hands down, second to none, the best Chines food in the city. THe crispy duck melts in your mouth and the prawns are amazing. Served beautifully and elegantly by a very well trained and professional staff. EXCELLENT!!!!"

  • "My wife and I went to Chicago for the Thankgiving weekend and experinced the best Chineese food in Chicago!!! The Service was spot on and everything we ordered was simply quite tasty. We will return when go back to Chicago."

  • "Beautiful setting, marvelous Asian food elegantly presented. The server was very helpful in advising us on ordering food for sharing. We enjoyed a leisurely meal and were not rushed.."

  • "Have eaten here many times. Beautifully prepared and presented Chinese food. Attentive waitstaff but on this occasion a bit tentative. In the summer the outside terrace is a wonderful place to eat. On this occasion it was an ice-skating rink."

  • "The food at Shanghai Terrace is probably the best chinese food in Chicago, although very expensive it is definitely worth it.The unusual setting does remind you of a pre world war 2 supper club in Shanghai. The service is also remarkable and also a reminder of the Pennisula hotels legendary reputation as one of the great hotels of the world."

  • "We have eaten here before and have enjoyed it each time. This time however, was a little less enjoyable. The Peking Duck, which we typically have there, was a little different and served differently and not as enjoyable as before."

  • "Truly great service... They kept an eye on you the whole time so the minute it seemed you needed anything they were there. They took your coats/bags, offered to call the valet for your car before you left the restaurant, etc. Absolutely LOVED the atmosphere...quiet with nice music....almost zen/spa like. Food was good but atmosphere/service was really what would bring us back. We had a 5pm reservation so we were the only ones there, which we loved. Definitely pricey & I'm not a Chinese food expert so it's hard to say if this was the best Chinese you'll ever have but we did enjoy the food. Overall I'd definitely give the entire experience an A+."

  • "This is one our second time dining here when we've had out-of-town guests. It's convenient to the hotel where they stay. The food is over-priced and skimpy so it's necessary to order 3-4 appetizers and 4 entrees for a party of 4."

  • "Ate at Shanghai Terrace for a special occasion (35th wedding anniversary). Everything about it was outstanding. The Wok-Seared Lobster and Kung Pao Prawns were excellent, as were the Spring Rolls and Lobster Hot and Sour Soup. The service was attentive but not intrusive, and very professional. The restaurant itself is beautiful. We will return when we visit Chicago again."

  • "What a great treat to dine at Shanghai Terrace. Fall has set in so no outdoor terrace. But inside was cozy with terrific smells all around. The food and service were impeccable. The Kung Pao shrimp were the best of our wide sampling (but everything was excellent). Need to come back soon...."

  • "You can find great Chinese food for alot less money but if ambiance and service are important this is the place to step up to fine dining. We went on a cold fall day so the terrace aspect was only what you can see through the window but the indoor part of the room is beautiful. The level of service was the equal to and fine dining French temple of dining. The variety of food was the typical offering of local Cantonese places but with a few unique special dishes and a non-typical all day selection of Dim-Sum. We had a great time."

  • "We went for my birthday and took our two year old. It was a little more quiet than your typical family restaurant however my child behaved - thank goodness! When by child raised her voice it was heard throughout. We went on a Monday evening so there wasn't too many people which made it easier to hear a two year old. Overall service and food were great!"

  • "My husband and I were staying at the Penninsula and decided to dine in the hotel the first night. Upscale Chinese food sounded interesting, and Shanghai Terrace had received good reviews. It was the right choice! The restaurant was lovely, the menu offerings were unique and interesting, and every dish we selected was terrific. Our favorite was the appetizer of plump, perfectly cooked prawns on cucumber rounds. We also had a Kung Pao chicken like we'd never had before, a vegetable medley, and a scallop entree. We shared all the dishes and loved each one. Even my glass of wine was memorably good. Yes, it was certainly more expensive than a typical Chinese meal, but it was well worth the price and our 5-star recommendation."

  • "The best Chinese-cantonese restaurant in town. The dim sums are magnificent! You can't miss the three course duck, it is a delight! We had dinner to celebrate our Chicago marathon finish and it was worth every penny. The service is impeccable."

  • "The food is always perfect. This is Chinese Haute Cuisine and it is truly a great place. Snuggled into the Peninsula and with the eponymous terrace, it is beautiful inside and out. Word to the wise, these are not Chinese diner prices. The menu is extensive and the ingredients and preparation are top of the art of Chinese cooking,"
