  • "My boyfriend and I celebrated our first yr anniversary, and the ambiance was just the perfect setting. It's definitely lived up to be in the top 100 most romantic restaurants of the US. We even got a little treat for our anniv. Truffles, candle to blow, and 50% off our 2nd bottle (it was so good that we decided to buy for our next anniv celebration). The food was above average, but the price was very reasonable so I can't really complain. The service was great. All the staff there were very nice and attentive. I will definitely recommend this to anyone. "

  • "I have been to shadow brook twice. The first time I went was for a friend's birthday party, and I had the blackened lamb. It was easily one of the best meals I've ever eaten. The flavor was intensely awesome, and the texture was on point. The second time I went was for me and my gf's 4 year anniversary. That time I had the Bisteca Milanese, and it was pretty good. Unfortunately it was not anywhere near as good as the lamb, but still was pretty good."

This is wonderful place to go for special occasions (anniversary; birthday; etc) and have always received special treatment during these occasions.   • "The setting is so gorgeous that one can't help but feel pampered in this beautiful restaurant. The food is wonderful, the service is perfection. My family and I have been coming to Shadowbrook for more years than we'd like to admit and find the many improvements in the facility to add to Shadowbrook's charm. We recently celebrated my mother's birthday at Shadowbrook. What a treat to sit near the old fireplace in the main room! Actually all of the rooms in the restaurant offer their own intimacy and romance. The food was great, as usual! Loved the prime rib! My husband and I have enjoyed the "Winemaker Wednesdays" in the winter and delighted in chatting at the bar with the chefs."

  • "I've been here many times before, most of those being special occasions. This was for our anniversary and we had a wonderful experience again. The restaurant is so unique that nobody can argue there's a great atmosphere. One thing I'd love for the restaurant to incorporate at some point would be two or three course meal specials. I enjoy going out to eat best when a salad or soup is included, and perhaps even a dessert. But I'll definitely be back here for our next special event."

  • "Our party was 6 adults and two 3 year olds. The food was good and would have gotten a very good if it wasn't for the fact that my swordfish was overcooked and I am kind of a fish snob. Dessert was the jack daniels chocolate death or something along those lines. 1 dessert, 6 spoons. When the wait staff offers to bring your children "child sized chocolate sundaes" be forewarned that these are not exactly "child sized" but big enough to bounce them off the walls. This restaurant can be quite romantic with a soft ambiance, beautiful view, great wait staff and good food, wine, cocktails and dessert but it was also nice to see that it was family friendly restaurant, maybe a bit pricey for everyday but a great place for a celebratory family meal."

  • "We went here for our anniversary dinner. The bartender at our hotel told us that Shadowbrook had an old 1950's car that would pick us up for free so we utilized that service and it was really cool! The outdoor garden area is beautiful and we spent some time wandering around. We had reservations and our table was ready quickly. The waiter was nice but the service wasn't outstanding. I don't recall ever being asked if I wanted another drink and my glass remained empty for some time. I had the filet which was good but not fantastic. It came with some gnocchi that was really addictive!! All in all I liked it and it was a nice place to check out but I don't know if I would come back next time because the food and service was only so-so."

  • "You go to Shawdowbrook for the atmosphere and ambiance, historic beautiful location with river view, complete with tram ride or winding garden stairs..and the food is usually great. Bar is beautiful and great music with weeknight specials for casual dining. It is then romantic spot in the area for special occasions. There are many rooms and different areas to choose from. I'm a local and go to Shadowbrook at least twice a year. Only negative is portions are not big, and entrees do not come with soup or salad. Like I said you go fir the atmosphere! Noise level depends on the room you are in...you can ask for a quiet spot..."

  • "My wife and I dined here for the first time. The service was very good also. The waiter was very knowledgeable and helpful. He was pretty attentive but not overly so. The service staff were very good at picking up the completed food dishes. The food was all well prepared and due to the highly spread out dining places, was brought to the table with a cover to hold the temperature. Dining at the lowest level gives a nice view of the plants and lighting on the grounds and a view of the river. The next level up shows the details across the river of peoples back yards for those who are interested in what is in back yards. We prefer the lowest level in the restaurant."

  • "I am only giving a rating of 3 stars because I took my wife to shadow brook for the very first time for her bday dinner and I had specifically put in the notes of my reservation that it was for a bday and had also informed the waiter/hostess and nobody acknowledged for her bday when other tables around were being sung too for there bday and I could tell she was waiting for hers as well and it never happened. Overall she enjoyed the view and food that was the only downfall."

  • "We go to Shadowbrook about once a year, usually for a special occasion. This time, it was our wedding anniversary, and as usual, it was a great experience! We really enjoy the ambiance, the charm of the restaurant and beautiful setting along the river. Our waiter was fantastic, and we really enjoyed our interaction with him. The rest of the staff was attentive, without hovering, and as usual... the food was delicious! Shadowbrook has been a family tradition for years, and it never disappoints!"

  • "Ok so, here it goes. We got there a few minutes early hoping to catch the trolley down since it was raining. No such luck, the line was ridiculous to try to get on so we walked down what I believe to be way too many stairs, and steap considering the attire is somewhat formal, and heels were an issue. When we entered the establishment, we were completely overwhelmed by the loud band that was playing in the bar, couldn't even hear the hostess. We were seated in a timely manner, however I felt like I was in a dungeon in the room we were put in. I've been here before and always loved it. This time I was sadly disappointed and definitely will not go back"

  • "We made an online reservation for an early dinner. We were surprised to see a crowd when we arrived. They were dealing with a large party (maybe 30) transferring them from the bar to a private dining area. once the large party was seated, our pager went off and we were seated. Everything went perfect from there. Chowder and salad were great first course choices - dependably good. The prime rib was outstanding - perfect temperature, size and flavor. The sides are always amazing, too. The garlic mashed potatoes and creamed spinach were both very good. This time we shared the mud pie. Also great! What a treat!!"

  • "Don't bother asking for a nice seat. They don't try. Asked for a window seat for a special occasion. Got a seat next to the busing station and never even saw the water. Walls all around the dining room. Had reservations for weeks, makes no difference. Honestly a huge majority of the guests were celebrating something so you wont get any special touches. First visit and really were looking forward to a romantic dinner. Instead the waiters and bus boys kept apologizing for the noice and walking past us constantly."

  • "This was our first time to the Shadowbrook in over 20 yrs and have to say it was an incredible evening. The location and grounds are as if you've stepped into a rain forest with tree ferns and greenery all around and the Soquel Creek below. The multiple dining rooms each have their own look and feel, but the service through out was fantastic. A very nice selection of fresh seafood and prime cuts of beef along with chicken and pork entrees was wonderful. The grill beef bruschetta with goat cheese gnocchi was out of this world. Can't say enough about how enjoyable our experience was and we will definitely be back."

  • "I hadn't been to the Shadowbrook for nearly 20 years, and wanted to bring my mother as a special treat on our vacation. It was just as lovely as I remembered, from the beautiful restaurant itself to the plating of the entrees (Pacific Rim Salmon and Brook Trout - both delicious.) The funicular down to the restaurant made it possible for my mother to visit, but I do suggest walking down the steep paths through the gardens if you can. We visited on a Wednesday night for a 7:15 reservation, arrived at 7:08, and our pager buzzed at 7:14. The entire service team was lovely, including the servers and clearing staff, and especially our waiter Matthew. It was a well-paced, special occasion meal (1h 45min.) I won't wait 20 years again!"

  • "We heard about this place from multiple people and were not disappointed. The cable car ride is unique, as are the many levels of the restaurant. It is a place that a curious kid would love to go exploring, and every dinning room is outfitted wonderfully. The food maintains the expectations and delivers on a moderate selection of delicious dishes. We has the Filet Mignon special and Seafood Campanella, followed by the chocolate explosion. The wine tasting flight was also a fun thing to try. It was priced appropriately for the quality and we enjoyed all aspects."

The waiter was friendly, he made the kids feel welcome and we all had a great time. The only thing that wasn't perfect was the cappuccino... We should've send it back. Tiny little cups and it wasn't more than some coffee with milk instead of a real cappuccino cup with foam. But... with a few barista skills this should be easy to learn...."

  • "Normally we love Shadowbrook - Sunday's dinner was a disappointment. My meal (Vegetable Napolean) was very tastey but came to the table lukewarm at best. My husband's prime rib was supposed to be medium rare and came to the table medium to well done. Our waiter was the invisible man - I don't like waiters who hover, but you should be able to find them if you need them. I guess Sunday is not the day to go to Shadowbrook."

  • "Two big problems with our experience. A rank amateur waiter and waiting over and hour to be served our meal after ordering. The waiter took our order and that was the last time he spoke to us until after we finished our meal. Didn't ask if we wanted a refill on our cocktails, didn't tell us the kitchen was having issues and there would be a delay, and didn't ask if our meals came out correctly. Totally missing in action! We have eaten at the Shadowbrook several times before and never experienced anything like this. The service at McDonalds is better that what we received."

  • "It was our 37th wedding anniversary and we chose to let our last 'not so good' experience go by the wayside and give it another try. Unfortunately, our server didn't seem to have the time for us, with exceptionally long waits between seating, orders and check receipt. We ordered the prime rib, medium-rare and received it between medium and well done - dry. The salad was from a mixed green bag and the artichoke soup seemed watery instead of creamy. The meals savings grace was the desert. The cappuccino was excellent and the chocolate meltdown delicious. Of course the bill was astronomical as the out the door cost was $130 (no alcohol). There are some very good restaurants in Santa Cruz with good service and good food."

  • "My husband and I had a night out without the kids. Decided to go to Shadowbrook and as always we were NOT disappointed. Good drinks, appetizers, artichoke soup and I got the lobster while my husband decided on the New York. It is pricey, but worth it."
