Sfoglia is a lovely little trattoria residing on an unassuming stretch of the Upper East Side, across the street from the 92nd Street Y. Farmhouse tables topped with the season's produce are the appropriate setting for Sfoglia's country Italian fare.   • "I had high anticipation for a pleasant dinner. Unfortunately I am afraid it has gone downhill. I found the chicken soup with some kind of greens that was quite tasteless. The greens congealed and nearly choked my throat. The salmon was quite good, actually. I didn't find the service pleasant. The waiters were surly and that made me feel uncomfortable. The desserts were excellent, actually. I so hope it will improve as time goes on."

Kept us waiting for our table for over 1/2 hour and did nothing to ask the group at our table who were all on their cell phones and had paid their bill to please move to the bar. The food was mediocre and the service poor to none. But as we were practically the last to leave at the end of the night as our original reservation had been for 8:45, our bill was brought before we were finished eating and they tried to remove plates before we had completed our meal. Clearly we will never return. And the bottle of wine, their most expensive was very over the hill."

  • "I love this "neighborhood gem," both the food and the friendliness of its management, which respects its loyal old-timers. The food is fresh, and freshly imagined, frequently. Inventive Italian. Each time, everything has been to my liking, both at lunch and dinner hours, but for a particular waiter. Possibly even the same waiter who made for problems 2 years ago. Sfoglia deserves better; so do its appreciative diners."

  • "This was the 2nd time I was at Sfoglia. I was not happy with some of the previous reviews and became nervous. I was totally blown away again. I had the Fluke special which arrived just the way I ordered it "no additional salt". It was served in a carrot puree. My friend had the delicious chicken with a side of roasted cauliflower which was awesome. It would have been nice if the chicken arrived with some kind of side dish...anything. Although Brick Chicken is delicious it's quite expensive for 1/2 a chicken especially since my European roast is better :). Yes I will return, service and atmosphere has a country feel and I was surprised to see taxis when I exited. Wine and Service were great and they care about your dining experience."

  • "I eat at Sfoglia whenever I am lucky enough to get a table, which, in the past few months include playing hooky on a late Thurs. afternoon, a pre-planned celebratory dinner and a last minute table on a snowy night with cancellations. Neither the food, nor the atmosphere ever disappoints. The bread is as good as any I've eaten anywhere, including Italy and France, fresh out of the oven it's steaming hot, indescribably crisp and full of yeast, perfect with the spicy olive oil. The pastas can't be beat, particularly the (not so) simple Bolognese. But what I really come for is the roast chicken. Taste it before you judge me! Last night the dessert special, a bread pudding more like a soufflé was extraordinary. Great experience."

  • "Sfoglia is our new favorite restaurant in the city. Having been there a few times, we sat at the bar our last visit. We were blown away with the friendliness and attentiveness of the bartender. Our pasta was taking a little longer than usual so he made sure to personally determine what was causing the delay. He was a friend by the end of the night and we can not wait to go back again!"

The food was generally good (directionally better than typical UES restaurants). but a bit over priced for what we were served. The pasta was very good. The skate dish was much too rich.   • "I live around the corner and had never tried Sfoglia. Mistake. I went for lunch during the middle of the week and enjoyed grilled branzino with mushrooms and some type of parsnip purée and a 1/2 order of pasta to begin. My server was professional, friendly and knowledgable. I'll return soon."

  • "I love this restaurant. I first started going to Sfoglia on Nantucket. Sadly, they closed that restaurant years ago, but they have recreated the ambience and food here in NYC. The chicken under a brick is the best you can ever wish for, and their pasta and charcuterie is amazing. Actually, everything I have ever eaten there has been delicious. They focus on fresh, seasonal ingredients, so the menu is always changing. I can't say enough good things about Sfoglia - I've had intimate dinners there and have also rented out the restaurant for a private party. It's the best! I only wish they would re-open on Nantucket."

  • "Excellent food and service. Not a fan of having to share a communal table for dinner; it is a little too connected for private conversations. Something to dampen the sound that bounces around in the back room would be helpful; the brick walls, the wooden tables and floors don't absorb much of the noise from others. We found it harder to hear each other across the large communal table than to hear the couple next to us. Also, the room was overly warm; fortunately I could take layers off and have chilled white wine to cool off, not so the baby who ended up with just a diaper and was still verbally uncomfortable."

  • "The menu consists of a weird mashup of ingredients with the result that there isn't a lot to eat. I ordered their "signature" dish, chicken under a brick. Which consisted of an oversalted, skimpy piece of chicken that must have been on a diet, with nothing else on the plate. The salad preceding it was a plate of field greens with nary a dot of garnish, etc. that said, it took 30 minutes to deliver the salad and a total of 45 for the chicken. The server had an attitude, the room (in the rear) was dark and felt like we were hiding out (good place to cheat if you're so inclined). This place is overhyped, overrated and definitely not worth the trip. Oh yeah my wife ordered the other "signature" dish, the bolognese and hated it."

  • "I love this restaurant. The rustic Italian ambiance is inviting and soothing. The decor is great. The food is fantastic - you have your standard Italian classics like bolognese and then other things like tonnarelli with lamb, squash and mustard greens (just tried it this past Sunday) with unusual flavor. The chicken is sublime. In fact it might be the best chicken I've had at any restaurant in the city. Desserts are also lovely especially a nice cheesecake with cherry compote."

  • "Wow.....great night! Food was delicious...homemade pasta reminded me of the dishes back in Italy. Our waiter and the maître d were so welcoming and service was spot on. Had a delicious Brunello with dinner which for NYC seemed reasonable . All and all it was a great time and I would go back tomorrow if I loved there !"

  • "The food really isn't that good, and the portions of some things were extremely small. For example, the cheese plate had three slices of cheese so thin you could practically see through it! The pastas were fine, but nothing special, absolutely not worth 30$, and the table bread that I was so excited for lacked flavor. It could have been salvaged with a salty butter, but there was no butter or salt on the table. We sat way in the back of the restaurant by the coat check. Overall it was a disappointing and expensive (100$ a person) birthday dinner."

We were not disappointed in the food., and we were very pleased the restaurant respected and complied with our request for a quiet table. The only negative in the entire experience was the somewhat condescending, unhelpful attitude of the waiter -- a contrast to the wine master who was friendly and helpful as we selected one of the lower price wines on the list."

  • "The food at this restaurant is outstanding and it is one of a very few good places near the 92nd Street Y (where we were going). However, sitting downstairs is like being in a dark dungeon. It was drafty and I hated the communal table. We were the first people to arrive for our 5:45 reservation and we asked to be seated upstairs but our request was denied (or rather just ignored). The prices are high and the ambience is awful. I'll return to Peri Ella next time I have tickets at the Y. If I just wanted good food, I could order it to go."
