Seventy Seven Walnut offers seasonal cuisine in an upscale, casual setting. Great low key jazz plays unobtrusively in the background. We always feature Mediterranean inspired fare, using the freshest ingredients that are harmonious with the current season. Executive Chef Daniel Foti delights diners with wonderful
dishes such as a roasted grouper in parchment paper with tomatoes, cremini mushrooms, olives and seasoned with rosemary, and a 5-Spice Pan-Roasted Pork Chop served with sweet & sour cabbage, bacon lardons and potato gratin. There are gluten-free and vegetarian dishes as well.

  • "Montclair continues to grow its reputation for classy upscale restaurants in the suburban shadows of NY. Went to 77 Walnut for a spur of the moment dinner. All the food seems to be locally sourced if that's important to you. Had the chicken lime soup and duck breast. The soup was hearty and flavorful but the portion was a tad small. The duck was excellent and the cous cous side was a great complement. The restaurant is BYOB with a liquor store around the block. We sat outdside on a great summer night, so I can't comment on the ambience inside. It's a realatively small and new place. I bumped into the owner at the end and he was kind and gracious."

Now that Culinariane is closing their doors in the next couple of months, we have a replacement for fine dining, and it's just down the street. So happy that we're going back next week to take another pair of friends. Highly recommend the lobster appetizer and the cod as the entree."

  • "I tried Seventy Seven Walnut this weekend for the first time. The food was great. Unfortunately the service was not. We specifically asked our server to bring our appetizer as a separate course prior to the salad/soup but all three dishes came out at once. Moreover, there was no bread course for our table though other tables got bread. Otherwise, the service was spotty at best. When my pasta was served the server asked if anyone wanted pepper but didn't wait for the response -- so no pepper for me. Empty water glasses sat for long periods. Very inattentive. We were in and out in an hour and a half rather than the 2 1/2 hours more typical of a nice meal in a nice restaurant. It is a shame as the food was great."

  • "We loved our dinners (swordfish and lobster pasta); I would give this restaurant 4.5 stars. The service was fine, but impersonal (not that I like overly-chatty waiters, but this woman never looked at us, though she was efficient). We went on a weekday, and the noise level was not a problem. I expect that when crowded, it could be a problem. Overall, we were very pleased and will certainly return."

  • "Not to mince words... food and service were excellent but..... SMALL portions, VERY EXPENSIVE, limited menu, long wait for food, parking a bit of a problem especially when there's a ball game. Just what I really don't need, another restaurant who can't find the balance between quality, quantity and reasonable price. Prices are so high for what you get, why go back again when at those prices I can choose from dozens excellent restaurants in the area for $5-10 less per person. BTW it was BYOB, so alcohol is not included... though bottles of smart water at $6 a litre is! No more than $2 in the store... really 300% markup??? Considering the prices.. it would have been a nice touch to charge even half that price."

To make the dinner all the more enjoyable, the staff was excellent. We appreciated being able to bring our own wine. And the two artist at the table gave high marks to the artwork décor.   • "I think that I really wanted to like this place. The food sounded great. However everything was just like... 75-80% of what it should have been. Nothing was incredibly spectacular. The service was not bad. They don't serve alcohol which really detracts from the meals... and in fact, they don't even really serve real drinks. Just water or some weird homemade soda. I wouldn't go back, but I wasn't incredibly disappointed or anything."

  • "This interesting location on Walnut Street has had several iterations over the past several years. The latest is by far the best. The seasonal menu and well crafted dishes in an inviting dining area make for a perfect match. Add to that the fact that it is BYOB means that this is now a regular return. It does get crowded on Saturday nights,but the servers are knowledgable, efficient and friendly. 4 1/2 stars!"

  • "At first I was a little skeptical since we just made the reservations less than an hour before we arrived, especially for a Saturday night at 7pm. When we arrived there was one other table eating dinner so naturally I thought my first impressions were correct. The restaurant was very well decorated and had wonderful jazz music playing thought the restaurant. We ordered the crab dumplings and mushroom tart as appetizers which were fantastic. As the appetizers came out so did the other patrons. The restaurant quickly filled and soon was as loud as any New York City restaurant. Overall the food was excellent and the service was equally as good. We will soon return."

  • "We returned for our 4th visit and were so excited with the options on the new spring menu! We really enjoyed: Spring Garlic Soup, Crab Wontons in broth, Swordfish and fish (Cod?) with lima beans in parchment which was served with some kickass mashed potatoes. The service and owner were delightful as always, such is the plus of dining early! My husband loved the cheesecake, it wasn't my favorite style, but this was fine as I was full. We look forward to returning and trying more items on the new menu and the outside tables."

  • "New favorite place. Genteel and friendly staff. Refreshing to be greeted upon arrival and acknowledged, thanked even, at the end of the evening. Such hospitality and manners go a long way in making for an enjoyable meal. The food inspires: insalata siciliano-shaved fennel, orange, onion, arugula, pecorino. Brilliant. Amazing garlic soup, spaghetti with olives, golden raisins, pignoli, orange zest, pepperoncino - delicious. Swordfish steak and five spice pan roasted pork chop are elegant and perfectly portioned. Beautiful art adorns the walls; great attention has been given to table settings, real porcelain and beautiful flatware. Owner Frank and his talented brother, Chef Daniel, are doing something truly special in Montclair."

  • "I dined here last week and had the most wonderful meal! Seared tuna app was sublime and the spaghetti with olives, raisins and hot pepper with orange zest made me think I was eating in Sicily! Service was awesome and the setting was wonderful with eclectic art and phptps and fantastic colors everywhere. Fresh flowers, on every table and great music makes it a total romantic setting. Their new spring menu is fantastic. I'll be there at least one a week or more if I can!"

  • "The food was excellent -- dishes well-conceived and executed, but the portions were very small. Our party agreed that if we were big eaters we would have still been hungry after 2 appetizers and 2 salads and 4 main courses for 4 people. The lobster roast appetizer is amazing but so little lobster that it was like the actual lobster was just waived over the dish. There was no accompanying veggie or carb with the baked cod - which was also delicious, but just not enough food."

  • "We really enjoyed our first visit and will return. The setting is lovely, as is the welcoming maître de and service. We shared a special shaved fennel salad with orange segments which was light and flavorful albeit too a SMALL! I had the porkchop- slightly over cooked but delicious. Sides were tasty but also tiny portions. The clam and chorizo stew was good, also on the small side. Homemade cheesecake was lemony and Delish."

  • "We went on a Friday night. The atmosphere was very energetic and the place seamed almost full. As far as food goes, we started with the lobster appetizer and the duck confit. The confit was ok but a little too salty for my taste. The lobster tasted great but was a very small portion, especially for $16. For entrees we had a swordfish special which was good except the relish on top was a little overpowering. We also had the pork chop which was very good. They were very accommodating in switching the sides on the swordfish so that's a plus. We did have dessert in the form of orangecicle crème brule. this was very good. Overall we were not overly impressed but believe since the place is new it deserves another chance, maybe a new spring menu?"

  • "This place seemed to be trying real hard to be something it's not. The service and atmosphere were very nice, but the food rated a solid "meh" by both my wife and myself. I had the lobster bisque appetizer which was OK, but nothing special IMO. My wife had the Portobello and onion filo tart. I thought that was very good and my wife agreed. Entrées were the double cut pork chop and cod, both ordered from the regular menu. Although the pork was cooked perfectly medium, it was the toughest piece of meat I've had in a long long time. I literally had to saw through it with a knife and cut it into smallish pieces in order to get it down. Not impressed. My wife's cod was good, but just that. Certainly can't justify the price point for this joint."

Food not only ingenious in regard to planning (the Potatoes Anna a perfect accompaniment to outstanding pork chop, not to mention the sweet and sour red cabbage), but executed to perfection. Orange creamsicle creme brulee a smash hit at the end. Prices very reasonable for this Manhattan-in-Montclair experience. Altogether a lovely evening."

  • "It was pouring when we arrived and very politely met at the opened door to quickly step in and get out of the rain. The other couple we were meeting arrived early and were already seated...very nice. A lot of places will not sit you until the whole party has arrived. The menu wasn't too big and had a few specials. However, we were totally disappointed that the pate appetizer, which is a regular selection, was sold out at 7:30 on a Saturday evening. And the ravioli special was just a little too chewy. The cod and pork chop on the regular menu were delicious. Our waitress was lovely but forgot to bring out our desserts until we got her attention while she was busy buffing wine glasses. It's definitely worth another try."

  • "Enjoyed a very nice meal and evening on a quiet Monday night at this newly opened BYO restaurant. The dining room is elegantly appointed and warm, the service is precise but convivial and the menu offers enough interesting choices to make the selection of app, entree and dessert difficult, as we wanted to try just about all of them. Food is expertly prepared and presented using high quality ingredients. Montclair has just added another notch to it's culinary belt, we are looking forward to our return to try more of the menu ........."
