I simply worked off of this site, going through restaurants in the Murray Hill area, to find a lovely place to take our NY friends, who were grieving the loss of a 28 year old son. Searching all of the choices, this looked like a very good choice. I did know that it was going to be a Prix Fix menu, but, the actual menu for Valentine's Day night did not look like what I remembered seeing on the restaurant site. The choices were pretty boring and the food was very average. The ambiance of the restaurant was not impressive. The service was decent. The overall dining experience was quite disappointing.

Went for NYE and appreciated the availability of their regular menu. Spoken to in French and English, and all staff were quite pleasant with a soft sense of humor. Meat cooked to exact order (when most other restaurants tend to undercook). Cozy seating which meant that the table next to us kept looking over at our table for some reason. Great find and will definitely go back!!

We chose Serge for Christmas Eve, and are very happy. I had the French Onion soup, which was delicious. My spouse ordered the mussels. My spouse had the trout and I had the hanger steak, both of which were prepared very well. French fries were served with the mussels and the steak, and are notably excellent. They also made very good cocktails.

The food was very good. It seemed that the kitchen may have needed more help. The meals did not all come out at the same time. It was very busy with what appeared to be a party in the back area of the restaurant. I've been here before and it was better than this last time.

Serge is one of the few reliable restaurants we've found in the low East 30s around Fifth-Madison that, for a moderate price, offers a pleasant atmosphere, good bistro food, friendly service, and a place where you can also carry on a conversation. Well worth knowing about.

Despite having made a reservation through opentable, when we arrived at the restaurant with a party of 6 we were told that because the reservation had been made only recently that they could not accomodate us. And were not at all apologetic about it. Instead, the staff basically told me that it was my fault because we did not make the reservation early enough. It seems to me that if restaurants want to be part of the opentable system they should do a better job of updating whether they have availability or not.

This was our second dining experience at Serge's. We were not disappointed. Serge's is a nice little French bistro. The only thing that was different from the first experience (which was in the spring) was the size of the crowd. It was pretty quiet this past visit. Perhaps some of the regulars decided to go to Serge's new French bistro across town, which I understand opened two weeks ago. Serge's is a short walk from the Empire State Building and is only .7 of a mile from Penn Station so the location is great.

Not expensive by New York standards and above average for food. It ia not a gormet spot, but nice as a good neighborhood place and for tourists who want a sit-down restaurant with good service but who are not looking for a high-end, over-the-top, expensive place. Many times those places don't do much better than the neighborhood restaurants. They just have a "name" and average food.

I live in Murray Hill and this is one of the neighborhood's true gems. I had not been in a year and was so glad I came back. This is a traditional French bistro that includes the classics as well as some refreshing twists. Service is delightful but not intrusive and the ambience inside the restaurant is perfect for a quiet, romantic evening or a special event that might include a small group.

Exceptionally good value for Manhattan (we'd have paid more at home in Indiana). Excellent French bistro-style food. Friendly service and pleasant surroundings. Our only concern about "ambience" was the absence of other diners on a Friday evening (only 2-3 tables filled). It left us wondering "why," though we never did find an answer. By all rights, the place should be bursting with business.

Overworked and harried service marred the experience. The was not enough service (no bus staff) and the two employees trying to serve the entire restaurant could not keep up. They brought us the wrong entries. While the food is not bad (not great by Manhattan standards either) this kind of service (or lack thereof) is unacceptable at a Manhattan restaurant of this type. I have seen diners with better service

Serge is definitely the show here. What a character! We really enjoyed his interaction. He even bought us a Cognac after dinner and joined us in a toast! Some nice specialty cocktails, an adequately stocked bar and some fine wines by the glass. We also enjoyed the bistro atmosphere and at least one other table was French-speaking. The menu has fine standard offerings at reasonable prices. We are from Philly and the prices are comparable to upscale restaurants in our city. The lemon tart for dessert was very good.

Food was a mixed experience; Beef Carpacio was excellent, Steak Au Poivre was average, at best. The Trout Meuniere was perfect but the Coq au Vin was stew-like. The Pate appetizer was authentic, the wine list is very limited. The Staff was enthusiastic and eager to please, attentive without hovering. I listed the noise level as enegetic because during the first hour of meal there was brithday party for a teen and 12 of her guests; raucous until they left, when it became a cozy bistro. I came away from the evening cheering for this restaurant to get better. The staff we encountered were delightful, the atmosphere was great - the wine list needs to step it up and the food is on the cusp - improve and you have winner - stand pat and close.

This was our first time dining at Serge's and we were not disappointed. In fact, the entire dining experience exceeded our expectations. We eat out a lot and have not had a better dining experience (perhaps equal, but not better). The service was attentive, but not overbearing. The only reason we did not rate service a 5 was we had to wait a long time for the check. The food was unbeatable. We never rate food a 5 but this was definitely a 5! The potato leek soup is delectable. Both my husband and I ordered the scallops, which were exquisite. The lemon tart was extraordinary. We live in the Philly area so are not in Manhattan very often but the next time we are in the area, we certainly will visit Serge's!

  • A French restaurant in Murray Hill

I first discovered Serge when it was called Cafe Creme, and was the official supplier of food at the Morgan Library. I have been going there on and off ever since, and have rarely been disappointed. My most recent visit--on Friday evening--was wonderful. The room was quiet enough so that my friend and I could talk (which is, for me, the point of dining out.) The food was perfect, and the wine, a bottle of pinot noir for $35,was a perfect accompaniment. Although Murray Hill was once home to many family-owned French restaurants, most are now gone. Thankfully, Serge has survived and flourished, without visible change. It has become my favorite place in the neighborhood for "special" dinners with good friends.

I love having Serge in my neighborhood; always a lovely spot for a quiet dinner-- with or without guests. Quiet, and consistently good food. That said, at least one of the servers plays into the "French" stereotype of being snobbish and rigid, and the wine list is not the best.

The owner is highly friendly, warm and entertaining. He loves his restaurant and all who eat there. He clearly has a loyal clientele, many of them French. The ambiance makes it feel like Paris. The waitress was a bit harried and was abrupt. She missed things (we had to seek out the owner for butter and for drinks) but it was just out of inexperience; everyone must start somewhere. The food was superb, simply superb. A great find. We went back twice during our trip to NYC.
