Diner Reviews
  • "We were celebrating my daughter's 19th birthday. We had a table by the window, the food was delicious, the waitor was extemely friendly and the free birthday cake was "to die for" We had a wonderful, memorable dinner and I will go back again for a special occasion."

  • "Chose Sequoia to celebrate Easter and our daughter's eight birthday; and we couldn't have made a better selection for brunch. It's a good thing that we ignored several reviews criticizing the restaurant's food as being just average and service being slow... no - you will not be rushed. Nothing could be further from the truth. Brunch was delicious and selections ample. For Easter, Sequoia had face painting, a carton character artist, a balloon artist and a Jazz band - all who along with our waiter did everything possible to make sure that guests had s fabulous experience. We have not been to the restaurant in some time, thud were pleased to see that it's quality of an overall great dining experience has remained intact. Thanks all!"

  • "This is our second year in a row for Sequoia's Easter Brunch and it did not disappoint! Lovely setting, a nice variety of food, attentive server and a festive atmosphere!"

  • "the food was less tasty than promised the place was empty not a good place to visit on a rainy night a bit expensive for what we received "

  • "Went with guests from out of town to give them a nice view of Washington. We got that along with overall slow service, mistakes in both our drink order and food order, mediocre food, and a general sense that other than location this restaurant does not have much to offer."

  • "One of the worst meals I have had in a very long time. I worked at Sequoia/Center Cafe/America over 20 yrs ago so thought would be fun to bring family and friends there while visiting DC. The waterfront views are still spectacular, the rest is off the charts bad. I could have used my wife's sea bass as a rubber ball for my kids to play with, my seafood stew stank and, even worse, it was in a red sauce but the shrimp were not peeled and the lobster was not cracked so you had to pick it up with your fingers and risk getting the smelly red juice in which it stewed all over you and your guests. Alas, I managed to spray the stinky juice all over, ruining a shirt and my friends night! Just terrible. "

  • "We took a party of 13, including 5 children under the age of 9, for a family celebration. The brunch menu was outstanding and delicious. We were made completely comfortable and the children had an grand time returning again and again to select items from the vast buffet selection. The beautiful setting and restaurant decor is awesome. Thanks Sequoia"

  • "I hosted a group of nine out-of-towners at Sequoia for dinner. My friends loved the expansive dining hall, decor and the outstanding view. The food was generally very good -- especially the steak, barbecued oysters and lobster mac and cheese. "

  • "This restaurant is one of my wife's favourite. We had some friends visiting and they love exquisite food. This restaurant has everything great panoramic views, well located, and great food. The assigned table, food and service were perfect as the expected. We will keep coming back and if you are in town it's a must. "

  • "We made reservation for inside but decided to wait for outdoor seating because of the beautiful view. We went to the outdoor bar to have a drink while waiting. On this particular night the computers were down and not accepting credit cards. We paid cash for our first round and actually received our second round for free due to outage. It took quite a while to be Seated because there were not enough servers for outdoor seating. The food was good, nothing stellar. Enjoyed the macadamia chicken but the baked potato came out wrong. Took forever to get a new potato. Luckily we enjoyed the view and we were not in a hurry. Would give it another try. "

  • "I've gone there for a business dinner, and for a date. Both experiences were great. The menu is majority seafood based (obviously, look at it's location). It's lovely inside, and the view overlooking the Potomac River is splendid."

  • "Took the host 10 minutes to recognize we were the only party waiting. He was completely disorganized. Waitress completely ignored us after serving drinks. Forgot to deliver one of the orders. Then messed up the check completely. Food was great. Service terrible."

  • "Our party of 4 was looking forward to a nice evening out and chose this restaurant thinking we would have an elegant dinner celebration. The 1st time the waiter came to the table he said "I'll take your order now". Who does that? If you want to be treated on the fly - by a waiter who doesn't even have time to stop moving as he delivers your glass of wine or doesn't deliver until being asked for bread, steak knives, water or drink refills then this is the restaurant for you. I went to the front desk and spoke with the manager on duty who just gave me lip service and nodded his head repeating my complaints. We did not leave a tip. That is something that I have never done before but felt it was justified. I would not recommend this restaurant."

  • "I made reservations for a Sunday night dinner when the weather warmed up-- and had a bad experience. To start, they had not switched from their winter menu to the summer menu, so the entrée options were too heavy and lacked options. When I arrived and asked to sit outside, the host let us know that there was at least a 45 minute wait and our reservations only counted for inside seating (who knew?). Inside was too hot to think, they were out of every drink I tried to order, the computer system went down, so it was 30 minutes before we were brought drinks/bread and about an hour before we were served dinner. Diners around us were also having bad experiences and tried to cancel orders to leave early."

  • "I went to Sequoia to celebrate a friends birthday last Saturday. It took us almost an hour just to find parking. Thankfully the host was very understanding and allowed us to push back our reservation time. The restaurant is beautiful, and it sits right on the water. I wasn't impressed by our server Nicole. We had to look for her multiple times, or send another staff member to find her when we needed something. She didn't even come back to check on us after we received our meals to make sure everything was ok. I didn't like that we had to go up three flights of stairs to get to the bathroom. Not ideal for ladies wearing heels. Despite those few things we still enjoyed our evening, and look forward to returning soon."

  • "We were kind of disappointed that, even though I put in the Open Table reservation notes that we wanted to be seated outside, the maitre'd told us that they could seat us inside. We were seated by the window, which was nice, but we saw dozens of empty tables on the extensive terraces. It appears that they may not have had sufficient wait staff working outside, Our waiter, while professional and helpful, seemed overly rushed as well - - working many tables. My brunch dish was tasty (smoked salmon BLT), but my 2 dining companions weren't very happy with theirs (Monte Cristo sandwich, and Traditional Breakfast). After brunch we bought drinks at the terrace bar, where there was ample seating and the matchless view of the Potomac."

  • "Went there for Thanksgiving Dinner in 2013. All of the food was excellent! Carving stations with beef and Ham. Pasta and Crab Cake Station. Fresh lamb. The view from my table was wonderful, overlooking the skating rink. The huge picture windows had view of The Kennedy Center and the Harbour. Excellent!"

  • "Great location great service interesting menu and choices but the quality of the food, especially the main courses, was uneven seafood undercooked, pasta and meat overcooked."

  • "I was taking my fiancé out to dinner for his birthday and was very excited to try this restaurant. We showed up on time for our reservation, and I had requested a nice table so I wasn't bothered by a short wait at the host stand. I was not pleased with the women's bathroom at all. It was a mess and pretty gross. Once we sat down at our table, and before any server arrived at our table to take our drink order, that the power to the entire building went out! We sat there for about 20 minutes hoping it would come back on, but it never did so we left. I was disappointed that we weren't able to eat at sequoia that night, and that this was my first impression of a restaurant i had wanted to try for a long time.."

  • "Greatfood, serviceand scenery. The portions were just right, the food was delicios, andtheservicewas fast. Staff was very helpful, attentive andfriendly. All in all, a great dining experience! Sequoia is now one of my favorite restaurants!"

  • "Service was friendly, perhaps overly cloying, in an attempt to appear professional. However, they didn't really pay attention to us personally or read the situation, and kept interrupting at awkward times at the table. Felt rushed. Charcuterie appetizer was fine if not mind-blowing. One entree, duck, was very overcooked, dry, and tasteless. Waiter said it was served medium, I asked for it rare, and he said they could do medium-rare. This was nothing if not well-done. Seabass was good, but nothing out of the ordinary. Priced way over its level of service and quality of its kitchen. Plus, the lights went out and never came back on; that said, it was actually a lot nicer by candlelight, when it was not so over-lit as it normally is."

  • "It was good but there was a wedding going on so it was pretty loud. Not for kids, although there were a few there. Food was good but nothing spectacular."

  • "this restaurant provide me and my big group an amazing Sunday brunch. There was $8 parking located across the street from the restaurant as well as street parking. The ambience was lovely with nice blue and white accents. the food area was presented well without wait times to hassle. We were constantly serviced with Endless mismosas, water, coffe, etc. The staff treated us very well with manager ensuring we were satified throughout the meal. The menu ranged from fav lunch to breakfast items with an omelet stop and eggs benidict station as well. The raw bar was endless and and the food all together prepared and presented very well. This is a great spot for formal or casual brunch lovers!"

  • "Overall a good experience, but a little pricey considering other alternatives in the area. Service was not exceptional given the higher-end type of restaurant they are holding themselves out as."

  • "The dozen big meaty oysters were perfectly split and served on a mound of crushed ice with cocktail sauce, a vinegar dip, horseradish, a tiny bottle of tabasco sauce, lemon and lime wedges. Each oyster was a perfect treat. The French Onion soup had a rich dark brown broth under a delicious layer of broiled cheese. A Caesar salad was equally enjoyed. The arrival of the 2 1/2 pound crab stuffed lobster made me laugh - it was huge! The lobster was beautifully served with a small piece of corn on the cob, asparagus, and fingerling potatoes, and was more food than even a man with a hearty appetite could finish. The sea bass with coconut milk was also delicious. When we dine at the Sequoia and are not disappointed!"

  • "I arrived at Sequoia with my entire party and after being seated at the worse possible table at the restaurant (which was basically in the hallway due to a wedding) we left the restaurant. We asked to be seated at a different table because there were 8 empty tables and the host refused."
    Dined on 3/22/2014
  • "The ambience, brightness and spaciousness of this restaurant sitting on the shores of the Potomac is delightful. The food however was good but only average and somewhat overpriced. The wine was also overpriced and we seemed to be pushed by the waiter to order more bottles. Don't go here for the food per se but if you like dining along the river within walking distance of the Kennedy Center, this is the place and bring your checkbook."
    Dined on 3/22/2014
  • "We booked an early reservation on a Saturday night. It turns out that there was a wedding that night that took up most of the restaurant so only a small curtained off section of the restaurant was used as the main dining room. The server said that 50 weeks out of the year they had weddings on Saturday nights. They had a band that was so loud we couldn't even carry on a conversation at the table! The food was creative and flavorful. On top of the noise the servcer did not pay much attention to us and we were glad to leave when the meal was over."

  • "My daughter chose Sequoia for her birthday celebration. Among the things we liked best were the scenic view and the ambience, We were seated as soon as we arrived and our waiter was very pleasant. The only down side was that he appeared to be somewhat distracted, rushing from one table to another and occasionally had to be reminded to bring what we asked for. The food was delicious and the presentation was outstanding, They even brought a special treat for my daughter when they learned about her birthday. Overall, it was a very enjoyable evening and we will definitely return in the future."
