  • "My Wife's birthday, it made her very happy. Parking was very easy, which is great for people from outside the city. It was easy to make a reservation online with confirmation email. Staff was outstanding, very convenient when we can come in early (5-6) with no problem getting seated. Tried the 5-course tasting, which was fantastic, wine pairings were perfect. Only criticisms: steak was a bit salty (and although I loved it my wife was a bit put off that the steak was rare with no warning), foie gras was a bit bland, and dessert was a little generic. That being said I don't know if I've had a better combination of two different cuts of beef and the Scallop dish may have been the best Scallp dish I've ever had. Drinks were awesome too."

  • "While i enjoyed my meal, my guest felt hers was just so so. Food is very gourmet, beautifully presented, but can vary with the change in menus that happens regularly. "

  • "I was really looking forward to this special dinner and I must say I was a bit 'underwhelmed" by Sepia. This restaurant has a lot of hype on the internet so I was surprised to find the food was overpriced for what you got. You have to order the sides separately from the main meal, many of which were priced in the $30-38 range. Really? For that price, I'd expect a few veggies on my plate! The fish was lovely but I was not at all full. The tagliatelle appetizer was flavorful but lacked a bit of salt. There was no salt on the table. The desserts were ok, nothing to write home about and nothing memorable. Maybe it was because we were there on a Sunday night, but I suspect the main chef was not around."

  • "Sepia is a special place. Rustic tables and a Speakeasy atmosphere take you back in time. Yet, there is a relaxed feel that you can enhance by ordering a bottle of their confidential Champagne producers. Definitely off the beaten path. Service is proactive and impeccable. The food is inventive and tasty. Go there for an evening with friends and enjoy!"

  • "Sepia is an amazing restaurant, and the dinner I had there -- to celebrate my 17th wedding anniversary -- was special. We had the tasting menu, and the food was delicious and visually appealing."

  • "My entire party was disapointed in the food at Sepia. It just wan't anything beyond fair. Nothing any of us ate rose to the level of noteworthy or a beautiful taste."

  • "Similar to my review on another website "The service was great. The food was ok. I don't think this place deserve one star or maybe my expectation is a bit too high See my pictures for detail of the dishes that we tasted. Overall, the flavor is a bit too subtle or plain. For example, we needed to ask for salt for the sea bass, and it was lacking the savory flavor that usually comes with seafood. The duck breast was a bit too chewy, and the neither the smoke nor the tea flavor jumped out. If they didn't tell me that it was a tea-smoked duck, I would probably have missed it. ""

  • "Great food, service and ambiance, but the portions were tiny."

  • "Highly recommend the lamb rack and duck breast entrees. Everything was simply delicious!!"

  • "Delightful waitstaff, delicious food, interesting selections!"

  • "For starters, we ordered foie gras royale & ricotta gnudi. Foie gras was the best I have ever tasted...the touch of sour cherry gelee & the brioche made it excellent! The ricotta gnudi was okayish, nothing strikingly good about it. Entree was wagyu bavette, oxtail, maitake, coffee braised potato & chimichurri. The oxtail was par excellence , it had a wonderful smokey smell to it. The wagyu bavette, or plainly speaking the american kobe steak was juicy and soft and perfectly medium rare! I ordered the lamb rack, which was pretty good too. Dessert was chocolate cake, marshmallow, choc sauce and creme anglaise, which was beautifully presented and it was pretty awesome. It was not too sweet which I liked. We liked Sepia, will be back again!"

  • "Everything was awesome!! Food was outstanding. Wines by the glass list was a little short, but I loved the unique options. Special shout out to our server Tony. He knew the menu backwards and forwards. Great wine knowledge. Obviously enjoys what he does. Bussers were great, Food Runners were great. Host was great. Manager was great. I work in the world of "luxury dining" (if you will) and it was nice to be the one being spoiled for a change. Thanks Sepia!"

  • "I am spoiled by eating around at the best restaurants everywhere. So my expectations are high. Sepia's food was great but not the very best I have had. The ambiance was good but wasn't unique. We had the Fois gras for appetizer followed by wagyu and rack of lamb as entrée. Finished with coffee/ espresso and beignet. The food was better than what I had at Blackbird the week before, definitely lot more spacious and the waitress was not obnoxious at all. Wagyu was excellent, cooked perfectly and most importantly it was a good size serving- not 2 oz. filet you end up getting for $40 at some famous restaurants. I actually liked their approachable, down to earth environment- much better than Avec or Blackbird or Charlie Trotter's."

D'excellentes surprises !"

  • "The meal was quite simply...spectacular...even to the little samples from the kitchen that arrives twice during our meal. The wine list required a library table, one of those green glass lamps and 20 solid (but delightful) minutes of scholarly attention. I took a good friend and I think she may be an even better friend after we left the restaurant :-) She loved the food...and hopefully the company wasn't too shabby."

  • "Any place that serves pisco sours is a hit with me! And these were the best we've had north of Buenos Ares. Attentive service, amazing food - watercress soup and duck breast were to die for. My husband's rack of lamb was outstanding. This is now on our list of faves in Chicago!"

  • "My ratings have to be understood in context: The price of eating at Sepia is quite high, and because of that I had very lofty expectations. While the food was great--*really* great--much of the experience was poor. Mentioned to several people we were celebrating my fiancee's bday. For a killer experience, I expect the restaurant to do something special. Didn't happen. At all. Needed a coke due to my diabetes, and it ended up costing me five dollars. Five dollars is a lot for 8 oz. of Coke. Also, most restaurants will waive that fee--especially when the customer is paying 200 dollars for a meal. Beyond that, the place was empty (it was a Tuesday though) and simply didn't hit the mark for an exceptional dining experience."

  • "This place is really everything you'd expect from a Michelin star restaurant. Really wonderful and interesting food, well paced/extremely polite service and a great ambiance. Highly recommend for casual or special occasion dinners. Get the tasting menu with the wine pairing--it's great."

  • "Went here for a Chicago Chef's Week pre-fixe menu. The food was delicious, and the ambience was outstanding. A great place for a quiet or romantic dinner. Extensive wine list as well."

  • "It seems the bigger the plate, the less food you get. I left hungry! All very artistically placed and attractively presented, the food was just so-so. For what you had to pay, you'd think they could give you a couple shreds of kale."

  • "What's not to like? The Sepia team always delivers on a great culinary and sensitive service model time and time again. Chef Zimmerman and Owner Msr. Nony know how to be consistent yet innovative with their changing seasonal menu - always a new surprise amongst the regular offerings. After a meal of superb charcuterie, beautifully tender grilled octopus, Waygu beef, roasted Char, and Skate wing... as a pave (surprise!)... we ended with lovely desserts. Sommelier Arthur Hon helped us select two great wines to compliment everything as well. Great night and of course we shall return!"

  • "First time to Sepia, and we were completely IMPRESSED! Great ambience! Lovely food. I would highly recommend to ANYONE!!!! Would not change a thing!!!!! It served for a perfect backdrop for a birthday celebration!!!!!! AWESOME!!!!!"

  • "I have been to Sepia 3 times and each time was perfect. The cocktails are unique without pretension and the food is delicious. Great for friend dates or romantic weekend dates. The servers sail smoothy around making sure all drinks are perfect and all tables are having a great time. Nothing else necessary."

  • "The night was great: good friends and great restaurant. The ambience was quiet, despite it was full, so it was possible to have a good conversation with our friends. The wine pairing was a must, and food was very good."

  • "Food was excellent, wait staff very good, had a very good Pinot Grigio which i have not seen on any other restaurant menu"

  • "Sepia is one of my favorite restaurants and I have had the pleasure of dining here on many occasions. The food is outstanding - full of flavors and beautifully presented. The chefs are willing to take risks and therefore the diner can count on taste combinations not usually found. The charcuterie platter is a must appetizer! The skate wings and arctic char are delicious and the duck is so delectable. Having said all that, I have to say I was disappointed in the service during this past Wednesday's visit. The waitress had to be reminded several times of orders that we had made before they were finally brought to our table. Getting a second glass of wine proved frustrating. Waiters should not hover but be available for reasonable service."

  • "This is a must for anyone interested in classic service and fantastic cuisine in Chicago. Never short of excellent with a warmth to make you feel as if you're in someone's home. One of our favorite joints."

  • "We have been to Sepia before andi can say it has maintained its high standard of food, service and atmosphere."

  • "We very much enjoyed the food and ambiance. We dined during Chef's Week, and the menu was delicious and the wine pairings were perfect. Service was above average and incredibly friendly. The menu is not extensive, though the items all looked very good. It's very short on vegetarian offerings, however, with basically just one entree available."

  • "Spia was great! It has the whole package. Do not miss it if you have the chance to go."

  • "It was great experience for us. Food was very nice especially the duck breast which I would definitely recommend to everyone. Great service, nice drink menu.. overall we enjoyed the night."

  • "Being Andrew Zimmerman's restaurant, I was expecting a more exotic menu. However, it was the standard wagyu beef, octupus, arctic char, etc. The dishes were all in all good, but nothing blew me away."

  • "A good choice for business lunch. While nothing wows me when I go there, I alway enjoy my meal and experience. Very pleasant and the fish is always nicely done. It is a very safe choice when dining in a group because nothing is radically exotic and the food borders on under seasoned. It's classic American fine dining."

  • "This restaurant has been around for a bit and isn't one of the "hot spots" but that's a good thing. The food was great from foie gras to the charcuterie. Since this is a fine dining restaurant, the plates are small, but filling to the point of enjoyment without discomfort. I don't know why it took me so long to get here, but I'll definitely visit again."

  • "We have dined at Sepia before and the food was great. Somehow this time our dinner was not the best. The Bass was under seasoned and looked bland. The Duck was a little undercooked. The service was great. We explained what was wrong with the food and he brought us out the Brussel sprouts, one problem. Our guests was vegetarian and my wife does not eat pork. The server took it back and came out with another order without the pork. I think they just took out the pork because it was very salty and my wife had that salty taste in her mouth for a few days. The dessert was okay, nothing to rave about."

  • "We went for a birthday and had to wait 20 mins after our reservations to be seated. This wasn't a big deal since we were able to get a couple of tasty cocktails from the bar. After we ordered it took an hour and a half for the food to actually end up on our table. After the first hour passed our waitress came by to inform us that our food would be right out. A half hour later we were eating. Once our food finally arrived we were blown away, it was beyond amazing. The duck breast, the venison, the risotto, it was all phenomenal. So, I'd still recommend Sepia since the food was good enough to outshine the poor service."
