Ran out of the duck :-/Overall Sepia is a great dining experience.
My least favorite thing that happens in a restaurant in when they "run out" of an entree.
I was hosting six clients at Sepia on Tuesday night and they ran out of their duck entree for two of us at the table.
They kindly brought a complimentary dessert cheese plate which was a nice gesture.
Isn't it better to overbuy slightly and perhaps come up with an appetizer special with any overage the next day?6/11/2013 12:00:00 AMperfect for business lunchA tad pricey but a treat for a business lunch. Would be a nice romantic spot too for the evening.6/6/2013 12:00:00 AMSepia - still wonderful each timeWe have been coming to Sepia since it opened and have had some wonderful meals. Michael most often orders the duck preparation, as he believes that Chef Zimmerman's duck is consistantly the best he's had. We find this is a terrific space for one or two other couples. Can't beat the semi-private spaces for larger groups (just hard to get in!) Servers are great at knowing the menu, wine recommendations as well as overall service.
Another sucess.6/3/2013 12:00:00 AMPlease do not chageIt is our second visit. What a great place. Food is amazing and fresh with is local twist.Personnel is great and helpfull. We had a great diner. We will come back.6/1/2013 12:00:00 AMA place of glamourous contentmentThere was a mixture of comfort and elegance as we stepped in. The staff was very friendly and the ambiance was very sophisticated in the way they combined warm elements like wood and photographs with flashy chandeliers and mirrors. Our server was kind, professional and not intrusive. I wasn't completely satisfied with the first cocktail I ordered and she brought me another option without hassle. To start the night they brought us fresh baked bread, next were appetizers and dinner; they were both delicate and innovative.5/29/2013 12:00:00 AMNice, butSepia was good overall, ambiance really good, service attentive and information. Menu is limited but offers good range, portions adequate, preparations interesting. The ramp soup was delicious. The char was undercooked however, even for someone who really likes it rare.
Overall would go there again and recommend.5/24/2013 12:00:00 AMWonderful but priceyWe had a wonderful meal before a concert at Symphony Center, a nice, wake-up walk distance if you like to walk. Our gripe is that Sepia is VERY expensive, especially when you consider portion size. Including 3 glasses of wine, 2 appetizers and entres, a shared dessert, and tip, our bill was well over $200. And we weren't full when we lft, which is okay but for the cost. That said, the food is creative, cooked perfectly, and the menu has some unique ingredients. Which could help explain the cost a bit. We would come more often if it weren't so expensive, alas.5/24/2013 12:00:00 AMBest restaurant experienceBest restaurant experience I've had in some time! Outstanding service - there when you want them without hovering. The food was amazing.5/22/2013 12:00:00 AMOne of Chicago's FinestAmazing, delicious, memorable...oh so right. A flawless meal impeccably presented and served.5/20/2013 12:00:00 AMWonderful restaurantWe decided to eat outside as the weather was perfect. Service was wonderful and the presentation and food was excellent. Small menu during lunch but the arctic char was delicious.5/20/2013 12:00:00 AMOne-Year Anniversary HeroSepia was the perfect place to take my wife for our one-year anniversary. It was an amazing meal, we were not rushed and got to enjoy every flavor that the chef provided for us. Plus they provided us with a complementary Sparking Wine toast at the end of the meal which capped it off beautifully. Also, as a side note, it really is the perfect one-year anniversary place. The theme for one-year anniversary gifts is "Paper" and Sepia is built in a old Print Shop, and has antique paper presses as decorations around the restaurant. Would highly recommend.5/19/2013 12:00:00 AMGreat food; uneven serviceGreat food as always, though let down by the service this time. 1st: we ordered a bottle of wine; when the waiter opened the bottle, he proceeded to pour a full glass for each of us, completely skipping the tasting aspect. My friend and I were surprised and shared a confused look with one another. This is the first time in my life that I have ordered a bottle and had aspects of wine service completely skipped - never would have expected this from Sepia. Second, we ordered a side dish of vegetables, which never arrived at our table. When the bill came, I mentioned to the waiter that we never received the dish, and he said we were not charged for it. No apologies or acknowledgement of the over sight, just a simple "it's not on your bill."5/19/2013 12:00:00 AMGreat food, good serviceFood was great, service was good, pleasant atmosphere. Would recommend to friends.5/18/2013 12:00:00 AMSepia was Sumptious! We went to Sepia for lunch during our Girls' Weekend and LOVED it. The service was outstanding, the food was fabulous, and they had a lovely selection of wines. The interior is really cool, and it's a great spot. I would love to go to dinner there because I bet it gets very vibrant at night! Highly recommend!5/17/2013 12:00:00 AM12 course dinnerSurprising courses with a unique flair on Thai dishes.
Not too much food in spite of the number of courses.
Group service is excellent and the dishes come quickly.5/16/2013 12:00:00 AMGoodThis is a solid casual fine dining place. Good, knowledgeable wait staff, professional, relatively quick food arrival. Good creative food.5/14/2013 12:00:00 AMAMAZINGWonderful experience top to bottom. Great service, great wine. great food!5/13/2013 12:00:00 AMMother's Day BrunchExcellent experience. Been to the restaurant a few times now, and enjoy the food, service, and ambiance each time.5/12/2013 12:00:00 AMDisappointingThis was the 3rd year I took my mother to Sepia for their Mother's day brunch. Unfortunately, the food was lackluster at best, and just not good overall. I had the chiliquiles - the corn chips had been cooked so long I couldnt even chew through them. My mother had the flat iron steak, ordered medium rare, but 2 hunks/pieces of steak on her plate, while slightly pink in the middle, were rubbery and way over cooked. The first courses were just "ok" - past years they were spectacular. I'm sorry to write this review, as I've written glowing review that past 2 years - but we were definitely disappointed.5/12/2013 12:00:00 AMDelicious dinnerMy husband and I had a pre-opera dinner on a Saturday night. Service was warm and friendly. The food was delicious!! My husband had the waygu beef which was accompanied with beef cheek pastrami. Both were so tender and flavorful. Really delicious. I had the halibut and loved it as well. Cooked perfectly with lots of flavor. Don't expect to get stuffed on a dinner here (like you would at say a steakhouse) but it was enough to be satisfied.5/11/2013 12:00:00 AMSeasonal changesSepia has an ever changing menu that is reaching new highs with every seasonal change. Keep up the good work.5/11/2013 12:00:00 AMwonderfulWe had early reservations, so it was quiet. The service was attentive and our waiter recommended great wine pairings. The side of sunchokes was bigger than the serving of halibut, but all was delicious!5/10/2013 12:00:00 AMLovelyWe had a great experience - cocktails, apps, and dessert were magnificent. Notably, the crispy fried egg with asparagus, the duet of beef and the Arctic char were some of the best prepared that we've had in a long time. Definitely worth a visit!5/10/2013 12:00:00 AMWonderful Service and Food!I went with a few friends celebrating the end of tax season. Loved the food- Duck Breast and all of the desserts! Our waitress was beautiful, classy, and very professional. I would def go again.5/10/2013 12:00:00 AMAll dishes were delicious,All dishes were delicious, but we were disappointed with the portion sizes5/9/2013 12:00:00 AMEating outdoors made it quiet.Eating outdoors made it quiet. No one seems to want to eat outdoors here, so it's a great place for that.5/8/2013 12:00:00 AMGreat Birthday GiftMy husband took me to Chicago for a Birthday Weekend Getaway and chose this restaurant for my birthday dinner...he did a great job! The waiter was friendly and knowledgeable in both the menu items but also the wine list. He was attentive and had excellent communication skills and timed the courses just right. The food was just delicious and the ambiance was very pleasant. I would whole heartedly recommend Sepia to all who love great food!5/3/2013 12:00:00 AMBrilliant experiential diningI found this restaurant while walking the streets of Chicago on a recent business trip--and I'm glad I decided to venture inside. I ordered the five-course chef's tasting menu, which was a true dining experience.
At other restaurants where I've tried a similar menu, there are often a couple courses that are just *ok*. Not so at Sepia--each course was as sumptuous, unexpected, and delicious as the course that preceded it.
The dish that really floored me was a dish of wagyu beef served two ways. One of those executions was termed beef cheek "pastrami." In addition to being one of the tastiest bites of beef I've ever eaten, it was so unimaginably tender, I'm quite sure I could have cut it with a stern glance. Try it!5/3/2013 12:00:00 AMI make it to Sepia on a monthlyI make it to Sepia on a monthly basis but this was a special trip to see off the bartender, Josh Pearson. I normally just have drinks and appetizers but I had a full meal this time. The food is always outstanding, but the entree portions were a little smaller than I expected. I had a pork dish that was maybe 6 oz of tenderloin with a few slices of pork cheek to go with it. They tasted fantastic, it was just a little steep price for what I received. I may be back, but without Josh it probably won't be the same.4/26/2013 12:00:00 AMHad lunch at Sepia recentlyHad lunch at Sepia recently and every aspect of the experience was flawless.4/25/2013 12:00:00 AMSepia consistently deliversSepia consistently delivers an outstanding culinary experience and great service. The server suggested I try the turkey sandwich special and it was a great choice. I really appreciate when the servers know the menu and can suggest certain items. We'll be back!4/25/2013 12:00:00 AMWhile in Chicago, decidedWhile in Chicago, decided to visit based on reviews. I can see why this restaurant is Michelin rated, the food was eclectic but wonderful. The service is top-notch. My wife can be very hard to please as she is definitely not a foodie, but the waiter went out of his way to make her feel welcome and even found a wine that she liked (he refused to give up!)
The food was prepared with great care and the presentation was fantastic. Really enjoyed the evening and will go back when in town. I truly believe this restaurant deserves more stars!4/22/2013 12:00:00 AMPerfect date night...My wife and I decided that for date night it would be Sepia for dinner then a very small walk to the Cadillac Palace for a show. Sepia is a great place for amazing food and a relaxing yet elegant night out. The staff is very friendly and helpful.
Started off with a few cocktails...R&R Smash was smashing! Had the Foie Gras Royale to start and Chef Zimmerman even brought out some extra toasted brioche for us. The duck breast was amazing; the pork tenderloin was perfect. Oh, and the duck fat fried potatoes is a must!
Will definitely be going back!4/20/2013 12:00:00 AMFood was imaginatively prepared,Food was imaginatively prepared, and everything was delicious. Restaurant is creative and beautiful. Not too noisy. Overall, a wonderful experience.4/19/2013 12:00:00 AMThe service was excellentThe service was excellent -- friendly and knowledgable. The main courses, however, were somewhat disappointing. The waygu beef had tendons in it and the second piece was prepared as pastrami, which was much too concentrated and intense for the meat itself. The halibut dish was better, but the fish was not quite as delicate as one would have hoped.4/17/2013 12:00:00 AMThe bartender is a find: makesThe bartender is a find: makes wonderful craft cocktails and does not shake a martini too long. What we like best about the food is that it appears to be a simple presentation so that the ingredients stand-out. The chef obviously stresses making the food shine by using complementary ingredients.4/17/2013 12:00:00 AMService was a little bit slowService was a little bit slow but otherwise a great lunch spot.4/15/2013 12:00:00 AMI arranged a dinner at SepiaI arranged a dinner at Sepia for my parents. My mom was celebrating her 70th birthday and Sepia turned out to be one of the best restaurants they have ever visited. Special thanks to Joe Kellerman for his attention to detail and caring. I have heard about tasty duck breast, a great wine list and fantastic desserts. Happy Birthday, Mom!4/14/2013 12:00:00 AMI found the service and decorI found the service and decor to be impressive, the decor is very classic and yet very trendy with a relaxed casual vibe.
Food was very good. Really enjoyed the roasted beet soup was spectacular!
Thanks for a wonderful evening Sepia!4/11/2013 12:00:00 AMSepia was a real find. WeSepia was a real find. We arrived early and were the first guests (make a reservation!). Our server was attentive but not over bearing. The setting is lovely and understated. The food is outstanding ... the redfish was divine and the pork tenderloin was decadent. The pastry chef is a real artist; desserts were yummy. The meal started with an amuse bouche and ended with a small plate of miniatures (shortbread, mini flourless chocolate cake). Excellent!4/7/2013 12:00:00 AMFood was very good and interesting,Food was very good and interesting, but service was not up to the same standard as the food. We were a party of six and it seemed as if our waiter continually forgot about us. Sunday night, so they weren't too busy either. A side order was forgotten and then brought after entrees were complete without apology.4/7/2013 12:00:00 AMOutstanding service, withOutstanding service, with various additional treats. Tasty ingredients in all dishes and very appealing presentation. Not too noisy, easy parking.4/6/2013 12:00:00 AMThe chef's menu was a realThe chef's menu was a real surprise - small portions but amazing tastes and flavors.
Interesting and worldwide wine list - can't go wrong.
We came from out of town and can't wait for a return visit.
Another - don't miss!!!!4/6/2013 12:00:00 AMOne of the finest experiencesOne of the finest experiences I haveever had! Super food, great attentive service. Fine dining with no pretense. Can not recommend Sepia highly enough!4/6/2013 12:00:00 AMFabulous food, amazing servivce! We love Sepia. We have been there before and held our rehearsal dinner in the private event space last summer. The service is wonderful, the staff is so informed on all the dishes and wine list. There menu changes seasonally which is fabulous. A must visit if you live in Chicago or if you're visiting. By far one of the best restaurants in the city. They often offer several fish dishes, all have been wonderful when we've been there. And the bread that starts the meal is the best bread I've had! And stay for a dessert. They are all fabulous.4/6/2013 12:00:00 AMI dug deep into the seasonalI dug deep into the seasonal beer list - excellent variety
I thoroughly enjoyed my dinner - buckwheat pasta with rabbit meatballs, and wagyu pastrami steak.
Service was helpful and friendly.
Only complaint - few choices for vegetarians.
I would have loved to try the tasting menu - 5 or 7 dishes chosen by the kitchen - but it could only be ordered by the whole table. See above about vegetarians.
Basically I would return in a heartbeat, but my veggie wife probably won't let me until my next birthday.4/6/2013 12:00:00 AMOne of the best places inOne of the best places in Chicago! We had the tasting menu with pairings, the service and timing was excellent. You cannot call yourself a Chicago foodie if you haven't been here yet. Absolutely loved it!4/6/2013 12:00:00 AMWorth itLimited menu but the food was fabulous. The tastes were superb4/5/2013 12:00:00 AMWent for Easter brunch soWent for Easter brunch so we had a prix fixe menu. Food was great, service was great, cocktails were amazing! Best Old Fashion I have ever had.3/31/2013 12:00:00 AMYum!Sepia offers brunch only twice a year, but it's worth the special effort. Most items (breads, salads/starters, dessert) are served family style; but each diner can choose their own entree. Almost everything was superlative. Variety compensated for the few items that were less so. The most pressing issue was being (almost) too full to try the three desserts. Service was also excellent without being intrusive.3/31/2013 12:00:00 AM
