Another (our second) amazing culinary experience at "GwaiLo" PopUp. Senses is the perfect venue for Chef Nick's ceations. A cool sophistication with good vibrations. Now, we can't get enough of Senses. I heard through the grape vine that GwaiLo and Senses will be teaming up for a New Year's Eve bash. If so, We're IN !!!

We were really looking forward to the Gwailo popup menu at Senses... We thought 6 courses for $75 was reasonable, and the food was great. Very interesting however the portions were very small. We paid a lot of money and left hungry!... and had to stop on the way home for pizza!

  • Poor Service Expensive Good Food
    OpenTable Diner Since 2009
    Dined on 10/22/2012
The food is expensive but quality is excellent. However, service is very poor. The area opened for lunch is not that big with only about 7 or 8 tables. Certainly it was not busy but there would be no server around whenever we needed one. We ordered coffee after dessert. No one asked if we wanted milk or cream. Only one jug of it came with the coffee. I poured some in only to sip the coffee to find it was milk. It ruined my coffee. There was no server in sight and I had to walk up to the cashier area to find someone and asked to replace my coffee and bring cream. When we were ready for the bill, again not a soul was around. However, we saw 3 waitresses gathering around the cashier area chatting among themselves.

Overall we would say the food was good but not spectacular. The olives and hummus that were brought to the table to start were very nice and the rib eye steaks that two of our party had were also quite good. Unfortunately, the spring roll appetizer was mediocre, the french fries just so-so, and two pasta offerings, while generous in portion size, were equally unmemorable. Service was average. Dessert menu was uninspiring - two of our guests would have had dessert if something on offer had been sufficiently appealing. This restaurant needs to step it up a notch if it wants to seriously compete in the higher end category of similar restaurants that are in close proximity.

The food is very expensive. I was there at lunch and there were no entrees for less than $17.00 - the entrees were pasta, sandwiches and burgers. I had the turkey sliders which were very good and came with a generous side of sweet potato fries (which were very salty). Although the food was good, I felt that $18.00 for that meal was expensive.

  • Went for lunch the last day
    OpenTable Diner Since 2012
    Dined on 7/22/2012
Went for lunch the last day of Summerlicious. Food in general was underseasoned, soup was served lukewarm, cheddar crostini was chewy as it had been made way ahead of time and the bread had absorbed all the oil from the cheese. Pomelo and shrimp salad had grapefruit and orange with barely any pomelo. Green curry pasta was topped with sweetened coconut, creating a really jarring flavour. Such a big mistake that is so easy to fix with unsweetened coconut, toasted off to bring out the flavour. Crème brûlée was not evenly cooked and curdled around the edges, which should not happen if baked in a bain-marie, and it had been brûléed ahead of time and did not have a good crust. Chocolate tart was a huge disappointment. Poor, inattentive service.

Great Summerlicious venue. The creamy tomato and ginger soup and lemongrass and ginger creme brulee was superb, though the chili and lime marinated flank steak didn't feel overly special. Service was friendly, though it almost seemed too fast. Great lightning and good overall ambiance.

  • Great summerlicious choice!
    OpenTable Diner Since 2012
    Dined on 7/15/2012
Great summerlicious choice! We went this year as an anniversary dinner, and the star of the menu was the quail-salad starter. The pear, legume, and quail combination was divine. Ribeye steak was done to perfection, and the pairing with beans was classy and delicious. The deep fried aspects of the meal were a little strange, somewhat out of place for such an elegant setting, but they generally worked. The only downside was the dessert. My creme brulee was disappointing. The caramelized sugar coat was barely there, and the rest of the dessert was thick and unappetizing. I had looked forward to dessert as Sen5es (at least the cafe) prides itself in the dessert selection, but it left me wanting more.

food was good. asian fusion styled spices with unique flavours, my partner and i were surprised by how the ingredients / combinations were used in the dishes, ex. tomato 'n ginger soup might sounds a bit weired but actually very tasty (very balanced, unique, in a good way). yummy quail, ribeye. great service, courteous and attentative, even tho we were having summerlicious dinner menu, they did not rush us. a bit hard to find parking tho cause i refused to park in the parking lot across the street for 25.00 flat rate : s theres street parking available on king street about 5 mins walk.

  • My lunch during Summerlicious
    OpenTable Diner Since 2011
    Dined on 7/13/2012
My lunch during Summerlicious at Senses was a disappointment. I ordered soup for a starter and the steak as my main, and both were highly over-salted. The polenta was mushy and the crostini served with the soup was a piece of bread with cold, melted cheddar atop it. It was inedible. Just the day before I had eaten at another high-end restaurant, for a slightly lower cost, and was bowled over with the food and service. While they were cheerful and pleasant, the servers weren't professionally trained and the transitions between courses weren't smooth.

    OpenTable Diner Since 2012

Although the service was polite, there was a general attitude of indifference to the whole experience. Courses arrived extremely quickly, creating a sense of being rushed even though there were virtually no other customers. We were never asked if we would like to order wine, coffee etc. Generally, while adequate, nothing was distinguished as "special." also, the music (top 40 pop radio) wasn't particularly elegant and didn't help to create atmosphere.
