  • "If wine and someone special is on your spoon for the evening, then Select has the plate to match. This is a renaissance locale of a previous establishment, that's taken to a new vibrant level. The room has a very cool decorum, and equal to task... is the wine to pair. The staff I've dealt with there, are up to par, with a veteran sommelier. Its great to know that when guests are in town for work, and impressing them is going to be more than you maybe up to, just let Select, decanted a Cabernet . Oh, a shout out to the staff........Thx., Jordan, great selection advice, in the vino / food"

  • "Select is still a romantic late night escape for my wife and I after all these years. The ambiance has certainly changed, but he bright and light select is still a great romantic gem. For those who remember the old select though, it is certainly not the same type of experience. The mussels and steak tartare are the last of the old menu items, but the portion sizes and quality have certainly suffered. Select is still a gem, but just not the same as it once was- recommend select as long as you don't expect the same as the classic cafe select."

  • "Our group of four dined the evening of April 5 2014. Service was impeccable, and attentive. We started with Cod and Potato Cakes which were delicious, Ceasar Salad excellent dressing, and the Fondue which was very delicious. For our entrees we had the pork schnitzel done to perfection, beef tenderloin which was very tender and the lamb shank cooked to perfection, all were presented beautifully and were very tasty. Finished the meal with a Raspberry Mascarpone Cheesecake and a cinnamon whiskey Creme Brulee both were decadent."

  • "When we were served our entree, the brussel sprouts were RAW. I noted this when the server asked if everything was ok. She said they had a new cook, took them back to the kitchen and after i had finished the rest of my meal they arrived. Now they were warm with a glaze over them but they were still raw. They offered to take them back and recook them but by now i was frustrated. There was no restitution for part of my inedible vegetable."

  • "it was Cafe Selet before they had sold it and turns into Selet, the best was mussel when it was still Cafe Selet. I am glad they saved the mussel on the menu, but it was just not as good, maybe it wasn't mussel season, it wasnt very fresh when i had it, but the escargo and mushroom side was awesome, good price, and it was just delicious, highly recommand. Selet burger was good since their beef patty wasnt over cook, and they serve with skinny fries. Romantic atmostphere, just parking is a little pain becuase its in downtown."

  • "Regarding #2. There were no choices we would pick from. The restaurant was not hard to locate; the choices for Edmonton Dining were okay. What I would change....the vegetables were all over cooked. Both ladies ordered the same, with the meat to be medium well. One came that way, the other was really red. And after she realized it after tasting it, the appetite was gone. Our server was great. As the evening progressed (our reservation was at 5:30), the music got louder. Why? It wasn't a weekend; it wasn't a full house. There were families, and was it really necessary to crank it up? It wasn't that there was a line up out the door. We were looking for a nice dining experience. Would we return? More unlikely than likely. Thank you for asking."

  • "I ordered steak for $38. Had to wait 52 minutes for it. The food was ok, but the portion was tiny. I was still hungry after it. Never go there again. My wife ordered dinner for $25, and she liked it."

  • "Cafe Select has been on my list of "Must try" for a few years now and i'm very glad my wife and I finally took an opportunity to have dinner this last weekend. We took advantage of a special 3 course set menu and we were not disappointed. Great tasting food, friendly unpretentious staff and a great experience altogether. Prices were fair for what you get. We will be back."

  • "Gave us the opportunity to check out this restaurant. Great value for $25.00 which included appetizer, dinner and dessert. Selection was limited for this event, but food was very tasty. The chicken marsala perogies could have been served hotter, but were tasty. Snapper was good and nice to have fresh vegetables. Creme brulee was excellent. Worth a try for a nice evening again!"

  • "My friend and I went for dining week and we're not disappointed! My brother suggested it as it is one of his favourite downtown restaurants and I can easily see why. The chicken masala perogy dish was my favourite part of my meal."

  • "We have eaten here several times but our dinner fell short this night. The pork schnitzel was overcooked - tough and chewy. The spatzle which accompanied the chicken (which was delicious and cooked perfectly) was not like any spatzle I had eaten before. It seemed like it had been made some time ago and then reheated. We asked to share a ceasar salad and they just brought the salad and plunked it down - had to use my bread plate to divide the salad. It was busier than normal but then that is never really an excuse."

Great wine, amazing food (so much lobster in the risotto, perfectly down gnocchi, etc.), and just the right level of noise to allow private conversations and lots of laughter. Just wonderful to see how much it's improved this year."

  • "I arrived in a group of 7 people, so we had quite a few variations of dinner. However, I found that they used the exact same risotto and vegetables for different dishes, which made it seem cafeteria-like. If they were able to pair different vegetables cooked in different ways, with different sauces, that matched with the protein, then I would give this restaurant a much better rating. The dessert was the best part, although the creme brulee came slightly burnt on the top. Overall, the wait staff was very polite and attentive, and the atmosphere was perfect for both romantic couples and a fancy dinner out with friends! :)"

  • "Having walked by Select many times during the winter without going in, I was shocked to see all that I was missing. For Edmonton's Downtown Dinning Week, my partner and I gave Select a shot. We enjoyed a 3 course meal for $25. I was especially impressed with the Chicken Masala Perogies and the London Fog Crème Brulée. Apparently the perogies are a old Ukrainian family recipe. I've never been crazy for perogies, but I will definitely go back for more of those slightly spicy and very savoury tidbits. The restaurant is two-tiered and sitting on the top level provided and ideal vantage point for looking over the relaxing, romantic, artsy environment. Their drinks menu seemed well varied with the addition of some house creations. Try IT!"

  • "Went for DT dining week, went with the $25 set menu, I had the chicken masala perogies and the select burger. My partner decided to try the smoked salmon tartare and the snapper. The perogies were the highlight of the evening for me, absolutely delicious. We both enjoyed the tartare which had good flavour and was a nice option for lighter fare. The bottom bun of my burger was over-toasted but I was definitely a fan of the delicious dijon/gherkin mayo. The basil cream that came with the snapper was absolutely fantastic and really held the dish together despite the fact that the snapper itself was slightly overcooked. We both loved the LF creme brulee! Service was fantastic, we were well attended to by our server. We will be back again!"

  • "Despite an absolutely delectable piece of salmon cooked to perfection, the salad was covered in grains of sea salt. When I brought this up to the waitress she said that the chef does not use salt in salads and blamed it on the pickled asparagus and pickled carrots. The grains of sea salt were clearly visible! My companion also had an over salted meal and the vegetables on his plate were drenched in butter. This is not the first time it has happened. A little of both ingredients go a long way. If this happens the next time I go, I will strike this restaurant off my "go to" places."

  • "Great service and yummy food at this hidden gem. Everyone loved their meals and the Indian twist on perogies was a big hit. Cod & Potatoe cakes too. The chopped salad looked toothsome and but the shepherd's pie was kind of bland and lacking in any toothsome meat bits."

  • "A group of six of us enjoyed a wonderful Friday evening. The vibe of the restaurant was lively but it was also easy to talk amongst each other with is often difficult with a rectangular table. Our waiter was friendly and very knowledgeable with both the wine list and the food service for the evening. Most of the group choose the Arctic Char which was amazing as was the Roast Chicken and the Veal Shank – very memorable food/service making for a great evening out !!"

  • "The food was well-prepared and presented but there were a few bumps. I had ordered escargot appetizers but without the chili flakes as per the menu but they arrived with them, which was unfortunate as they dominated the dish. The roast lamb shank dish included chipotles, which I thought was unusual for French cuisine and made this dish too picant for the delicate taste of lamb. The vegetables were superb. My date's beef tenderloin was perfect. I would return to this restaurant but would take extra care to scrutinize the menu before ordering to avoid surprises. Decanting the wine was a nice touch. The waiter was affable and attentive but I think I got him flustered with my questions about the chili."

  • "There was a big table that really monopolized our server's time. We barely saw him unfortunately after he took our order, but before that he was attentive. It took over half an hour to get our bill after finishing our entrees. That is too long on a lunch hour. 2 servers for the whole restaurant is not enough. Food was amazing though."

  • "We enjoyed our nite at Select. The food was good, and the service was prompt and friendly but not obnoxious. We were there for Valentines day and valued our privacy as well good eating. My meal, the chicken was a little salty near the end, but I have been on a reduced diet so this is not uncommon for me. May be something to think about. The Devil's food cake dessert was almost too good!! Great evening, would recommend this establishment."

  • "My girlfriend and I dined at Select for our Valentines Day dinner. The flowers I had ordered were delivered to the restaurant earlier and were waiting for us at our table when we got there. Our waiter was both extremely friendly and extremely knowledgable. For the dinner course, I had the Lamb Shank, and my girlfriend had the Beef Tenderloin. On my plate, everything was cooked perfectly right down to the last asparagus and my girlfriend stated that this was the "best dinner I have ever had". Our waiter was frequent enough in check-ins to make sure we were happy and our drinks were full. My girlfriend had the time of her life and we definitely will be dining here again."

  • "We loved our Select experience. Walking up to the front door, we both had our reservations (no pun intended) as it didn't look like much. That was put to rest as soon as we stepped through the door. The charming waitstaff, the impeccable eye for detail, and the ambiance of the place drew us in immediately. The food was very good, and despite the fact that the Valentines rush was upon us, it still felt relaxed and cozy, not harried or loud. Our waiter handled the many tables with a calm and professional air, and retained a sense of humour that we appreciated. We were treated to a lovely night out, and we will be back again."

  • "Quaint and intimate decor; a small-medium space, but with tables spread out nicely so that there's enough privacy. The service was good until the end. After we paid for the meal, the server moved on completely, without a 'see you again' or even a 'have a good night'. It wasn't even due to a tip (15%, because the service was normal), so I'm not sure why that happened. The food was very good; not the zenith of Edmonton dining, but up there and with good value. Starters: shrimp bisque & smoked salmon tartare - very good. Mains: sea bass PERFECT, chicken oscar good, but the sauce was a tad salty (and we like salty food). Dessert: cheesecake excellent; very light but flavorful; choc. mousse: far too rich for our tastes. Overall a good time :)"

  • "I have been going to Select for many years, and since it's re opening and renovations, the chic modern French interior only accents the always-excellent food that I have come to expect over the years. The menu is always great. My friend and I started with mussels (fresh, well prepared and tasty), and I had the Arctic char while he had the burger. Both were excellent. The server Mike was knowledgeable, friendly and attentive. Highly recommended!"
