A word from Seasonal Restaurant and Weinbar
Over the years together, Wolfgang Ban and Eduard Frauneder have perfected their own modern take on Austrian cuisine - one which combines traditional techniques, contemporary innovations, and updates to some of their favorite childhood dishes. The team behind the prestigious private catering group, Elderberry Catering, chefs Ban and Frauneder, together with a small group of investors, have opened Seasonal Restaurant & Weinbar, their first venture open to the public. Their goal is to provide elegant home-cooking in a sleek but welcoming setting.

The chefs at Seasonal pride themselves on maintaining the utmost quality in their cuisine, and therefore, consistent with its name, the kitchen uses only the freshest seasonal ingredients. The visual presentation of each plate is the final step in the process, and the chefs have ensured that the look of each plate matches the refinement of the food itself and the décor, creating an unforgettable dining experience.

  • "I could easily get over most of the restaurant issues but when the Austrian chef/owner suggests a glass of "lady wine" with your appetizer you may think again whether to order a glass of Pinot Noir or not. A glass of NY water is just fine. If the same person tells you that lobster (used in their dish) comes "straight from the Danube river outside Vienna" you don't have to be polite and node with your head. It's overcooked anyway. When he blows his nose you could assume he's not feeling well but also you may think of sanitary issues, considering B grade note posted on their front door and a bucket placed in the middle of dinning room collecting water drips from the ceiling on a day without a single cloud in the sky. Should I say more?"

  • "The food is excellent and quiet ambiance makes it perfect for communicating. There is an adequate wine selection, although I can't understand the high price of wine in NYC. The price was at least 4 or 5 times the actual purchase price. They are no more expensive than any other NYC restaurant, but it is ridiculous. The food is traditional Austrian fare but done in contemporary ways."

  • "Seasonal is a very good restaurant in a dreadful location. With its proximity to Central Park, Carnegie Hall, City Center it should be a terrific location, but many of 58th Street's buildings' main entrances are on 57th or 59th so it is a one-block dead zone in an otherwise bustling area. We were dining early before theater and were the only customers in the restaurant for about an hour. The service was very attentive, exceptional really, and the food was beautifully and creatively prepared. Memories of the lobster and poached egg appetizer, pillowy spaetzle and well mixed cocktails are enough to get me on that block again. And I hope they don't have to wait much longer for a reevaluation by the City to get an A rather than a B rating."

  • "Slightly hidden on a block with lots of construction at the time. Then noticed the "B" rating..disturbing particularly with the construction! Bt was heading to theatre and friend was running late so went in..... Interesting menu, hard to choose ...lobster, egg, hen of woods starter was divine, spatzle tasty, good bread and spreads. Service started out great fell off a bit as it was not crowded and staff started talking amongst themselves..an unfortunate, common problem if owner or strong manager not present these days...bad enough that it disrupts service but I'd also prefer to hear my companion's conversation...not the servers!"

  • "This is our second visit to Seasonal and we were very disappointed. Asparagus appetizer was good; however, Weiner Schnitzel was chewy and absolutely tasteless. I expect way more from the signature dish. The waiters were totally uncommunicative. Will not return to Seasonal. "

  • "We took my mother in law here for Mother's Day for a prix fixe lunch. We each had a different appetizer, we all had the vina schnitzel, and we each at a different dessert. I should mention that my mother in law is Bavarian. The food more than met her hopes. The cocktails were amazing. A great mixologist at the Weinbar. We will be back."

One of the city's few featuring the wonderful cuisine of Austria, Seasonal offers a small and interesting tasting or a la carte menu. Our salad was one of the best we've ever had, and the wiener schnitzel is always outstanding. Desserts are a special treat here. The staff is pleasant and polished, and the noise level is civilized. Seasonal is on 58th Street, just two blocks from Carnegie Hall, and if the price is just a bit higher than some in the area, the quality is worth it. "

  • "I took my friend, who is a foodie, here for her birthday. We both enjoy Gruner Veltliner and there were three delicious ones (by the glass) to choose from. Mine was unfiltered -even better! The service was fantastic, they clearly wanted to please us. We only had apps (due to a large lunch), and they were interesting and tasty - white asparagus cooked to perfection, veal sweetbreads, pork belly and fava beans. Dessert was excellent - a crepe - and coffee was better than the one at my favorite cafe!"

  • "We have to agree with the reviewer who mentioned high prices and small portions. The trout consisted of two tiny pieces (four bites). The split pea soup was a very small portion in a large bowl. When I complained about the portion of trout, I did get a dessert without charge. However the portions are really unsatisfactory and the waiter acknowledged that there had been complaints."

The Austrian (and German) style food has been channeled through the imagination of some chef here and bears only slight resemblance to the real thing. While stylish and quite tasty, it was by no means superior to genuine Austrian or German food, which tends to be simple and plentiful. I came with the expectation of eating the latter and thus was disappointed, despite the pleasant atmosphere and attentive service. Imagine being served two tiny squares of fish meat instead of the whole fish (as is customary in Austria) when ordering trout! This restaurant truly presents a caricature of Austro-German cuisine, albeit one by a good artist."

  • "Austrian cuisine may not always approach that of France and Italy, but in the case of Seasonal, it is an outstanding alternative. My husband and I, who have often visited Austria but are for age and health reason no longer able to do so, have found in this restaurant a little bit of culinary solace. Especially outstanding were the Griesnockerl soup, the Tafelspitz, the appetizer of hen in the woods mushrooms, poached egg and lobster and the Kaiserschmarrn. The Wienerschnitzel is, I suppose, a limited genre no matter how good, but I loved the accompanying cucumber and potato salads. Festive food for festive occasions."

  • "We arrived for dinner on a miserably rainy Saturday in March - the place could not have been more welcoming! The ambience is lovely, with subdued lighting (two candles on our table), lovely decor, and great art on the walls. We chose from the prix fixe: the consomme was delicious and the wiener schnitzel terrific. The only sour note was the complimentary jelly, which tasted slightly off. We look forward to going back. Sublime and unexpected taste and impeccable quality in everyting we ordered: beet pasta (!);trout as magical as at that 3-star midtown mecca (Seasonal is a one-star!); weiner schnitzle with a sense of flair and divine taste;when I say German potato salad DO NOT think of what you have had because this is a marvel of combining superb potatoes with superb dressing; a fit-to-be-Austrian dessert of apple and delicate pastry; we decided to have pre-theater dinner here before seeing "Tales of Red Vienna", a fun combination, I thought! The play could have used a little of the magic that the chef has created here! GO NOW, before or after Strauss at Carnegie Hall,just don't wait!"

  • "One thing this restaurant does well (and this seems to put spice-addicted palates off, from reading some reviews elsewhere), is to bring out the flavors of the ingredienrts themselves, rather than providing flavor from add ons like garlic, spices, etc. Nothing wrong with that, but the inputs' own tastes are the most important, and I find that here aplenty. This is an updated take on Austrian food, and for those who know what that cuisine is and can do, that is high praise. Outstanding wine list, esp. plenty of very good by-the-glass choices, something many resto's don't do well. liked the poached egg and the pork belly appetizer, order the Kaiserschmarrn for desert. If room permits, add on one of their wonderful dessert wine offerings."
