A word from Seagrass Restaurant
We offer a fresh, Santa Barbara coastal cuisine fine dining experience. We believe our ‘coastal’ living experience is deserving of celebration. We care deeply about procuring the highest quality ingredients available and are fortunate to have access to superior local bounty. Santa Barbara Certified Farmers Market produce, California Seafood as well as product from the whole Pacific Region are just a few of the treasures that make our ‘coastal cuisine’ special. Our cuisine is seafood oriented, but offers a wonderful selection of meat as well, such as wagyu beef, kurobuta pork and foie gras. We are committed to sustainable processes and use organic and local product as much as possible.
Our wine program focuses mainly on Santa Barbara County wine, but also has strong representation of wines from other major wine regions as well.
A sample of our seasonal menu is available via our website, as well as our large party menu.

Diner Reviews
  • "This place was very good. The service was perfect. The food and wine were both very good."

  • "Get the 5 or 7 course chefs menu. it will be the best meal you had."

  • "We had made a reservation for a table outside on the loggia, where we had dined the previous year. We arrived to find that the patio was no longer set up for outside dining, more for cocktails. So we sat inside and it was a little bleak. The food was lovely, and the service was fine."

  • "Very pleasant dining experience. The staff was very friendly and they know what they are talking about. (The sommelier knows his wines, listens to your personal preferences and gives suggestion, also based on what you will be eating.) The food was very good, new experimental tastes, the grilled watermelon starter was nice! Their duck was also very nice. The desserts were nice and balanced flavours, chocolate bombe was delishious, not as heavy as it sounded and the chocolate-taste was not overpowering the other parts of the dessert. It is a nice atmosphere, some cool artwork on the walls. We will definately come back again!"

  • "The overall food quality was good but definitely not great. I think this restaurant is trying too hard to be trendy with it's dishes that it misses a few marks. Everyone we came in contact with was helpful and friendly. I ordered a watermelon salad which I would not recommend and a NY Sirloin which was very tough. We also ordered bottled, flat water at Seagrass. We were stunned when they brought us a plastic bottle of "Smart Water" and set it on our table. There are so many other better restaurants in the area in this price range."

  • "Seagrass is an excellent, understated restaurant with a lovely, creative menu and excellent food. We look forward to going back soon."

  • "We had dined here before and enjoyed it. This time may have been an off night - we ordered a beet salad and ceviche as starters which aside from being kiddie portion sizes had no taste. Similarly, we each ordered a $36 Branzino and were given what appeared to be a third to at most half of the fish. As to service, our server at first kept hovering around our table unfortunately not to ask if we needed something but rather to see if we were done as though they needed the table. The no name wine recommended was expensive by Santa Barbara standards and rather common. We recognize and commend the Chef/Owners' commitment to sustainable fishing and organic food but our experience Friday night was not something we'd like to repeat."

  • "This is where my husband and I go to forget the cares of the week and really talk while enjoying perfectly prepared food and excellent wine. It doesn't get better for preparation of seafood or fish, but the duck is also an excellent choice. Always excellent, quiet and refined. Treat yourself or your special someone."

  • "Seagrass has never done me wrong. I especially love to go there on special occasions and have 3, 4, or 5 course chef's surprise menu. Everything is delicious and all the special touches make the meal memorable. I'd highly recommend it to anyone!"

  • "This is one of our favorite restaurants in the Santa Barbara Area. Dinners are always delicious, and this time was no exception. We had the Seagrass Bruchetta as a starter, my fiancee had the pig cheeks (which he said were amazing!), and I had the Risotto (which was a great light dish). We also had the cream puff for dessert - it didn't last long! The servers don't seem to ever have an area that is theirs, which means you get attention from whomever is passing your table. I've never seen this as a bad thing. Our water glasses were refilled often. Can't wait to come back to try more entrees!"

  • "I don't quite understand the reviews for this place. The food was expensive and mediocre, the restaurant was empty and the wine list was not great. This seems like a restaurant on the way out frankly. Did not enjoy the experience of eating here at all. Our waiter was unhelpful and rushed although we were the only ones dining there that night. Frankly there are dozens of better choices available in the city of Santa Barbara. We will not be returning."

  • "This restaurant has changed owners since we last went there . Not only was the good horrible, tiny portions , but the service was the slowest ever. When we asked why it was taking so long , they said the kitchen was backed up. There weren't that many people there . Did not have their act together. Want a refund ."

  • "I had a gift certificate to Seagrass. It was simply spectacular. Of note...the ginger curry soup...out of this world! and all the desserts. Presentation was lovely. I really appreciate the ability to add a request to reservations...we were going to an event at UCSB and time was a factor. Thank you, Seagrass staff, for making our dinner perfect and timed so that we could comfortably attend our event."

  • "The appetizer was cold, the meat was tough. Our dinners came out after an hour of waiting and were so cold they weren't edible. "

  • "Had dinner here with my girlfriend before a show at the Lobero. The waitstaff was attentive but not hovering. The food was excellent. The wine list was small but very well selected. The entire dining experience was one of the bet I've ever had."

  • "My husband and I dined here to celebrate out 50th anniversary. The staff was friendly but not cloyingly so, the food was perfectly done (even the poached egg met my spouse's criteria) and this night it was quiet and romantic. I would certainly go there again!"

  • "Large variety so hard to choose. Each of the 3 of us ordered differently and then shared. Everything was over-the-top delicious: duck, scallops, risotto. The waiter was excellent, well informed, and attentive without hovering. Delicious dessert as well! Perfect for the birthday celebration!"

  • "This restaurant came highly recommended by a friend, and it did not disappoint. We had an excellent meal and wine (and we are picky about our restaurants), and excellent service. Would highly recommend!!"

  • "We are never disappointed by Seagrass. The food is always exceptional, beautifully prepared and presented The staff welcoming, knowledgeable, friendly, unobtrusive and accommodating. The new wine bar next door offers a livelier bar scene allowing a perfect transition to Seagrass's tranquility"

  • "We took our friends for their first time and they loved it. Nathaniel was our waiter and when you go you need to request one of his tables. We are Santa Barbara natives and we see lots of restaurants come and go. This one will last because of the people, menu, quality of food, wines and especially the wonderful owner! You will not be dissappointed."

  • "This was a great choice for a long overdue dinner date with my wife. Food was outstanding and service was attentive and polite. Particularly enjoyed the many gluten-free options on the menu and even non-gf items modified to fit my dietary needs. Ambiance was intimate and made for a nice quiet night out for my wife and I."

  • "Food was OK. Nothing memorable except for the wild boar ribs -- they were very good. Service was slow, had to be pushy to get attention."
    Dined on 3/8/2014
  • "It is lovely to find a family-run restaurant doing truly outstanding and sophisticated food, and the fact that they are smack in the middle of downtown makes Seagrass a rare gem. The wine list had some exceptional surprises as well, with quite reasonable list prices. An excellent local dining experience."

  • "Our meal was delicious if a little sparing in the portions for the price. The wait staff was great."

  • "This restaurant is sophisticated yet comfortable. The menu is somewhat unusual with items such as beef cheeks (tender & delicious) included with more expected fare. The scallops were huge and delicately flavored. The server was excellent even on an evening when a private party had 5 or 6 unexpected add-ons causing a major challenge for the kitchen and staff. As a result the meal was a bit slow coming out but Seagrass more than made up for it comping us all our deserts. The deserts, too, were first class, unusual, and delicious. Next door is a great little wine bar managed by the friendly and knowledgable chef's son. While there you can order off the Seagrass menu while sipping your Pinot."

  • "I was happy to get a reservation on Valentine's day. As a result the menu was pris fixe with a few items to chose from for each course. All the courses were good to great. The cheeses plate was extra and a little bit of a disappointment. The server couldn't tell me what the assortment was and had to call the waiter. He must of had too many tables as we didn't see much of him. So, really good food, but really average service."

  • "Found the food scrumptious, service impeccable with a sense of humor, and the prices reasonable given the attention to detail and flavors. Two appetizers: Carpaccio with capers and greens and a perfectly seared Scallop with potato salad and fennel, both wonderful. Second course: a leafy green salad and wild boar spare ribs (to die for!). Both entrees: duck with a very tasty red cabbage slaw, a poached pear, and pommes puree. Amazing how all these flavors went together perfectly and tasted so good. Shared a fabulous dessert, (wish we had ordered 2!) with an almond cake like cookie, lemon mouse, berries and a salted caramel sauce. One of the best restaurants in Santa Barbara. Consider the 4 or 5 course menu to save about $10 each!"

  • "While the service started out great, it went completely away when we got our meals. No checking on us at all until a new server showed up to take a dessert order. Which too 40 minutes to come to the table. Our waiter showed up to deliver the check and then was very effusive. a bit transparent.....Sad as our prior visit was perfect and we brought new people to try it out."

  • "We were visiting Santa Barbara and what else would you want to have but seafood. The lobster was not delivered the day we went here and so very disappointed. Other selections very limited and ended up with steak which was just ok. Would not go back."
    Dined on 1/15/2014
  • "The Service and the presentation of the dishes is wonderful, but the dishes are on the salty side. We ordered the scallop and black rice and the scallop was extremely salty and the rice was undercooked."

  • "Seagrass is my favorite Santa Barbara Restaurant. The food is always well prepared with unusual and exciting taste combinations. The service is excellent and I love the food!"

  • "Great little spot--chef came out and celebrated New Year toast with us when we were there for their prize fixe NYE menu--poor waiters not very organized, but not a good night to judge for smaller restos. Food was excellent--be prepared to pay much for it."

  • "We've eaten at Seagrass before and the food has consistently been outstanding. Unfortunately for them and us, some of their wait staff was new. I won't go into the glitches that happened as sometimes, s**t just happens and expecting perfection is unrealistic. Our last dining experience was top notch all the way around so this evening was an anomaly for sure. Nonetheless, if I'm being honest, then I would have the rate the service as fair. We did speak with management and they were aware of the situation, was very apologetic, and discounted our meal and comped us a bottle of wine. Can't ask for more than that!"

  • "We have been to Seagrass many times so when we saw that they had a special dinner for New Year's Eve we thought we would give it a try. We were not disappointed. We had the five course dinner. It was amazing! The menu was such that there was something for every taste and whim. The food was flavorful, the portions reasonable and the wine was good! We would recommend Seagrass to anyone who wants great food, good wine and service at a resonable price."

  • "Very classy experience for the palate and spirit. These fabulous owners/employees are so genuine and generous in wanting to give you the best of the best. Everything was super-tasty and magically cooked just perfect! We visited over 2 weeks ago but we are still talking about that night. Looking forward to another repeat soon ..."

  • "We were excited with the reviews we read and truly encouraged when we walked in to the beautiful place, but all went quickly downhill when the food arrived. The prix fixe menu included a crab special appetizer that was in edible; it tasted like a "raw" crab cake with too much mayo, that was followed by the fattiest short ribs ever! The desserts looked and tasted like supermarket pastries. I would suggest staying clear of any prix fixe nights and follow the reviews of the satisfied a la carte diners. I will not return."
