Diner Reviews
  • "As season ticket holders at the Guthrie, we dine at Sea Change several times a year and are rarely disappointed whether eating in the ding room or at the bar. On this visit we shared the octopus appetizer (they split the order for us in the kitchen- always a nice touch) and it was excellent. Very firm texture and flavorful. For our entree we both got the Arctic Char, which we have had many times in the past. It really is their signature dish and it's hard to beat for flavor. It's served on a white bean puree which compliments the fish perfectly."

  • "Food delicious. Portions are small, but that makes you savor the meal more (we eat too much any way). Especially good if you're seeing a show at the Guthrie."

  • "I came here for an early dinner before a show. I'd read some reviews, and I have to say I wasn't disappointed. The food was good; the portion sizes were just right, and the presentation was excellent. The octopus appetizer was great, and the monkfish entree was perfectly cooked with a fantastic coconut custard side. The price was high, but not unexpected. Thr dtaff was very helpful and polite. Overall, a great dining experience.a wonderful"

  • "We were almost 20 minutes late due to traffic and not known about detours. We still had a wonderful dinner, superb service and got to our seats at the Guthrie in time to enjoy "My Fair Lady". We love Sea Change!!!"

  • "The waiter bent over backwards to demonstrate that he and the restaurant were a notch above all others and me in sophistication. Unfortunately, I was not impressed or convinced. Sophisticated food should not need so much salesmanship, and it should be possible to describe with a few adjectives. By and large, there were too many themes, tastes and explanations for each item. If you want to feel very special for having chosen an expensive restaurant where the staff works overtime just for your intellectual tastes, you may like this restaurant. If you want an excellent meal served in a polite, friendly way with a relaxed ambiance, there are several much better choices in the immediate vicinity."

  • "Our waitress was so knowledgable and helpful...loved everything about ore dining experience before the theatre..."

  • "We ate at Sea Change on July 4th and watched the fireworks over the river afterwards. Dinner was great but the standout was the deconstructed Rhubarb Custard that was out of this world. Who would have thought the tastes of buckwheat and Sorrel could add to this exquisite dessert. I am a chocolate person, but this was a fantastic non-chocolate dessert!"

  • "We were able to eat on the patio. The best view in Minneapolis over the stone arch bridge! Interesting menu. The wait staff was very patient explaining every option on the menu and very helpful with her opinions on what she really liked. If you have Guthrie play tickets, it makes for a terrific evening."

  • "A nice restaurant, enjoy the meals but wish they would change the prix fixe menu more often."

  • "We went for dinner before a performance at the Gutherie Theatre, to which it is attached. The restaurant specializes in seafood and both the oysters Rockerfeller and the bouillabaisse were excellent. However, the wait between the courses was very long. Others who came later were finished before we were served the second course. We wondered if our order had been misplaced. When we were finally noticed there were many apologies but still !!! We were on time for the performance though. And the coffee was excellent."

  • "Great food at leisurely pace, allowing time to enjoy the meals. Excellent waiter. Keep in mind, servings are pretty small, allowing to order an appetizer, and salad, and main course and desert without feeling that you have overeaten. The chef is great and very receptive to special preparation requests: for example, I like my meat well done, preferably sauteed, and the duck that comes typically as medium rare was prepared to perfection to well cooked; other restaurants tend to char the surface of the meat. I enjoy every time dining there, always a great experience."

  • "Food was good to very good. Service was spot on and the setting was perfect for the evening with friends."

  • "Service started great. We were offered tastes of wine/beer to make a choice, and were offered split apps. After that I got the impression the waiter was annoyed. He was very curt and distracted. I'm pretty sure I got the wrong beer, I asked to double check, but was casually reassured. Waiter can't take a hint, apparently. The octopus was perfectly done and delicious. Trout with gribiche was unremarkable, a bit dry and under seasoned. The Bouillabaisse was very good. The beet salad with frisee was also unremarkable. Given the chef's reputation I was surprised. Nothing was actually bad (other than my beer) but if I'm going to spend that kind of money on a special dinner, I'm probably not going to do it again at Sea Change, unfortunately."

  • "Our wait staff was outstanding during our dinner. My husband said his skirt steak was great. My duck was OK; wouldn't order it again. We both liked the romaine salad."

  • "We chose the three course pre-fix menu. Each course was superb! Can't wait to go back!"

  • "Great evening! The evening was a gift from our children. it was an amazing evening filled with good food and theater. Happy memory. Tried foods that we had never tried before and enjoyed them all-octopus, boulibaise, chad etc. The dessert and breads were also delicious and memorable."

  • "Food was very good. Unique prearations, and the non-sea food entrees were just as good as the seafood. Great service made this a stand-out evening."

  • "Had a wonderful meal here + will definitely be returning. Amazing seafood, fantastic cocktails, and the perfect day to take a stroll at Mill City Ruins afterward. Service started out wonderfully and then lagged after receiving appetizers but overall was fantastic."

  • "We love to dine out, but my husband and I are far from foodies. Our waitress was top-notch. She explained each dish to us, and as a result, we ended up trying things we had never heard of before... and it was delicious! Everything well exceeded our expectations. We were able to enjoy everything and still make it to the show in plenty of time. I would highly recommend this for a special date night or a pre-show meal."

  • "The food was great the wife didn't stop talking about it for 2 days."

  • "Excellent patio with excellent food. The views of the Mississippi River and bridges from the patio are amazing. The cod and tuna main courses were excellent."

  • "While dining before a show at the Gutherie, thought it would be nice to get some seafood, we had been to Sea Change in the past and it had been good enough. This time the only thing good about it was the server."
    Dined on 6/25/2014
  • "Outstanding service and excellent food. Leisurely dining at its best. Our waitress recommended that after dinner we go to the 9th floor of the Gutherie theater (restaurant attached) for an INCREDIBLE view of the Mississippi River."

  • "We have eaten many times at this restaurant. Food was great, the server very attentive. A young couple with infant was also present. No problems when a mother is nursing her baby in a restaurant. However mom was strolling around the restaurant, rocking the baby while nursing - not covered enough for an upscale restaurant. It was distractive, and unfortunately no action from restaurant manager. Left the restaurant quicker than planned (it was a special dinner as well). This might be a sensitive issue for a restaurant to deal with - but this venue is not a family restaurant where this is tolerable. Wrote a message to the restaurant before posting here, but did not get a response."

  • "Salads were excellent but a little small. Fish entrees delicious. Great food, Great service from Lexi and great view. Perfect place to sit outside and enjoy summer in Mpls. (Patio ambiance could be improved with more flowers, more comfortable furniture)"

  • "The service is very good and the staff knows their menu. Happy Hour at the bar and dinner on the patio was top notch. And I have never felt rushed and have always made the performance on time. They are prompt and always ask if you are planning on a performance at the Guthrie and adjust to it."

  • "As usual, lunch before a play at the Guthrie was very good. The arctic char was done to perfection, but the oysters preceding the char were not of the best. The lackluster horseradish sauce left something to be desired, too, but if the oysters are perfect, no sauce is needed. Service was far too leisurely, to the point of being downright slow. I don't blame the server for this, so much as the fact that there seemed to be only two servers for the entire room. Fortunately, the room was not as crowded as it sometimes is. All in all, it was a nice lunch and I'd recommend Sea Change to anyone."

  • "What a wonderful meal. I was sad we had to leave to get into the theater. Seriously. Our server was outstanding beyond compare. And the food. Creative, tasty, beautifully presented."

  • "I thought I'd eaten oysters. Many times. Then we had an assortment from the Sea Change menu. They were so amazing and flavorful, I feel the other things I've eaten in the past were not even oysters. We actually asked for more, which we've never done in a restaurant before. Then the dinner. My husband had the ahi tuna, which was perfection. I had the char, which I've had before and can't bring myself to order anything else because it is so fantastic. My 18 year old daughter, unexpectedly, had the duck. It was our first foray into non-fish at Sea Change. No surprise though - it was superb - perfectly cooked - beautifully presented."

  • "Wife tried the cod, I went for the Ahi Tuna... it's been hard for me to find a "raw in the middle" slice of Tuna that reminds me of the blackened Ahi that you find on the West coast or Hawaii... but Sea Change did it! The fish was excellent and filling! I'd love to go back for a simple cocktail and a dozen oysters."
    Dined on 6/14/2014
  • "Items from the raw bar were spectacular, as were items from the starter menu. Many of the entree items were overly salted. Cocktails were also exceptional. If I go again I would probably choose not to order an entree but to stick with other sections of the menu."

  • "Our dinner was truly a dining "experience". The chef's presentations and the complex flavors were unexpected and deeply appreciated by my wife and myself. We will go back again. It was a complement to the Theater performance which followed."

  • "We arrived 15 minutes after the show at the Guthrie started, with a reservation, and anticipated getting a nice table. Instead, the hostess tried to give us the worst table in the house. We refused that table, given that the restaurant was largely open and they actually do have nice views, rather than the back of some plants by the computer screen. The subsequent service was cloying and the head waiter walked past our table swearing at some patrons. The food was so-so. "

  • "Bread was ok, but shrimp cocktail too salty, and char mushy and vegetables overdone and not flavorful"

  • "We have always had stellar service and innovative, fresh and delicious food at Sea Change - one of our favorites! Would recommend to everyone whether you're going to the Guthrie or not!"
