A word from Sea Change
Renowned Chef Tim McKee, 2009 James Beard award winner for “Best Chef Midwest”, designed the core menu for Sea Change which focuses on sustainable seafood, highlighting fisheries that use environmentally responsible methods of gathering and farming seafood. The menu also includes a number of items under the heading “Not Fish” as well as late night offerings of small plates and raw bar selections.

Diner Reviews
  • "This is the perfect spot for pre-show dinning, though I noticed not all customers were going to a show. The menu is varied and has unique flavors. I had salmon with popcorn grits. I wasn't sure what to expect but the two flavors actually worked. My wife had the spaghetti which had a deep zesty flavor. We will be back."

  • "i was just telling someone that I love restaraunts that the food is not only amazing but that the wait staff explains it to you. For example a dessert of spice cake with dried apple slices panna cota and pear sorbet... YUMMY. Great food and awesome service."

  • "Sea Change is a great spot for dinner before the Guthrie. The service was excellent. Food was very good and unique, although the portions were a bit small for my boyfriend. I would highly recommend it as a special occasion dining experience, as it is a little too expensive for just a regular night out."

  • "We picked Sea Change for easy access to the Guthrie, but that turned out to be the least of the five-star attributes. From the first greeting it was obvious that this staff was recruited for personality and fine dining savvy. The razor clams and ahi tuna appetizers were presented beautifully, and were rich with flavors worth talking about. The entrees were terrific (salmon and a cleverly prepared duck dish). They work to make things RIGHT. Time got short to make the show so with an apology came two more glasses of wine in plastic to-go cups. Unnecessary but accepted with thanks for an outstanding start to our evening."

  • "My husband and I saw a Sunday matinee performance at the Guthrie and came to Sea Change for a cocktail and dinner after the play. The food was great and the service was attentive and not annoying...none of those waitstaff drive-bys with the predictable, "how are those first bites tasting?" I have already recommended Sea Change to some of my work colleagues."

  • "My wife and I enjoyed everything about the meal. The food was great: interesting, tasty, even surprising. Service was excellent and appropriate. We came in just before the Guthrie performance started, so found it quiet and restful."

  • "Dining at Sea Change was a great experience. The noise level (6 pm on a Thursday night) was quite low which was nice for conversation. All of the staff are incredibly helpful and pleasant. Our waiter, Peter, knew the menu like the back of his hand and made choosing a dish difficult (in a good way) because he described them all so vividly. He even brought out a little shot glass of some of the juice that is used in one of the dishes for us to try. He informed us of the portions sizes and pointed out the best appetizer for a group of three to share (razor clams...AMAZING!). He definitely enhanced the experience with his fun personality and knowledge of the food. The food itself is so delicious. Complex, unique and wonderful flavors. Try it!"

  • "We finally made it to Sea Change, and it did not disappoint! The service and staff was friendly, knowledgeable, and prompt. The atmosphere is upbeat and interesting, and the table arrangement provides plenty of room to make it possible to have a private conversation. Last, but definitely not least, the food was imaginative and delicious! We thoroughly enjoyed the whole experience that is Sea Change!"

  • "Seachange, co-located with The Guthrie, serves a preheater lunch before the matinee performance. The food is delicious and the view -- which I have seen on cold rainy days, as well as much colder snowy days, is stunning. I always look forward to dining here, though do be aware that the portions are small and the prices are high. Still . . . I'll be back"

  • "Our reservation was for 7:30, so we were able to avoid the theater rush. I had asked for special attention when making the reservation through Open Table and I am pleased to say that all staff members went out of their way to provide very attentive service. We enjoyed the carefully prepared and presented innovative dishes, excellent service, and overall terrific experience."

  • "My frined and I arrived early for our reservation and were promptly seated. We were having dinner before the performance of Othello at the Guthrie. Our request to split two appetizers and an entree was graciously accomodated without protest or extra charges. The food was excellent, as always. We made it to the performance with time to spare."

  • "The staff is well trained to pace a pre theater meal. Very relaxed and enjoyable."

  • "Appetizers stole the show with razor clams casino, grilled octopus cooked to perfection and uni on buttered toast. Entrees were solid. This is by far the best venue for seafood in the Twin Cities. It is hard to get seafood outside of a Japanese restaurant in the Midwest that is not overseasoned or slathered with sauce and/or cheese. At Sea Change, they really do allow the fresh ingredients to be the star. Service was impeccable and friendly. Perfect spot for pre-theatre dinner at the Guthrie."

  • "I treated a friend to a birthday dinner at Sea Change and this was our second visit. The creativity from the Chef's kitchen is always a happy surprise. The wait staff are incredibly knowledgeable and helpful for making perfect selections. The low noise level at Sea Change is a pleasant surprise and it's a wonderful venue for excellent food AND great conversation, which is unusual. We discovered that the bar at Sea Change is a "hot spot" for post theater gatherings, but that was not a distraction and this looks like a hipster crowd that might be fun to hang out with. Cheers!"

  • "An excellent experience all around. The service is superb!"

  • "Food ws good and lower lunch/brunch pricing. One entree was sold out, but we weren't notified for about 20 minutes.Reordered another entree and wrong one brought to table. Gave up ordering another item. Just barely made the performance after eating quickly."

  • "We eat dinner at Sea Change every time we go to the Guthrie. The food is always wonderful as well as the service and wine. We tried the lobster appetizer instead of getting a salad and didn't care for it - likely because neither one of us is a fan of custard. But it sounded interesting so we had to try it! We really miss the beet salad! i had the artic char, as usual, and my partner had the ahi tuna. Both dishes were delicious!"

  • "We had an early, pre-show dinner at Sea Change and were so impressed by the service, the knowledgable waitperson, and the inventive fare. The ambiance is elegant and yet not stuffy, and the layout of the restaurant itself is such that you can have a quiet conversation with a friend without straining to hear. You can make a grand gesture to punctuate a point without slamming in to someone else's elbow. Fantastic night out."

  • "We returned to give the restaurant a second shot as our visit on Valentines Day was less than satisfactory. The manager Shanti made everything just wonderful! He was really the reason we returned as we remembered him being the only pleasant person from our previous dining experience. Thank you, Shanti for making it right!"

  • "Great food, loved the shrimp, trout, Corpse Reviver cocktail (it revived this corpse after a long trip!), and the chocolate ganache dessert was to die for!! Our server was super fun and knowledgable!"

  • "In the many times we have enjoyed Sea Change, they have rarely disappointed. This time, the entrees took a long time to arrive and then were lukewarm. In my book, any person or organization can screw up. It's how they handle it when it occurs that matters most to me. The manager of Sea Change was very responsive when I complained. He took responsibility, took half off each entree, and set about making sure the mistake would not be repeated. He was pleasant and not defensive throughout, with the stated intention of retaining our business. Now that's customer service - the true test of a great business! We will definitely be back."

  • "Sea Change is a great place for seafood served in unique and always tasty ways. Service is terrific with knowledgeable, professional staff. Tied in with an evening at the Guthrie, it's an experience I always anticipate and share with friends."

  • "The chef uses seasonal veggies in unconventional ways, but still "Minnesota palate friendly". Great way to try something new. Our server was very knowledgeable about the entrees and provided helpful suggestions. Our entrees were very, very good."

  • "We could have gone to any of the many restaurants surrounding the Guthrie Theater, but we choose Sea Change. We love the fact that the tables are far enough apart so that one is more comfortable and has some measure of privacy. Of course, even the spaciousness of the dining area would not have been enough to sway our choice if the food wasn't excellent. The lovely flavors just burst on your tongue. The service was seamless. We also appreciated the fact that Sea Change will keep your coats until after the theater performance -- another plus."

  • "I went to Sea Change with my mother before attending a 7:30 show. I made our reservations online, which was convenient. Our service was fabulous! The host checked our coats for us- for the whole evening! We had the Oysters Rockefeller, a perfectly executed Caesar Salad, and I ordered the Ahi Tuna Entree, which has by far the most unique flavor and texture of any dish I have ever experienced. After the program, we returned for dessert. The Key Lime Bread Pudding is incredible. You must definitely try the vodka infusions. I had the espresso and it was the perfect finish to a dining experience I will never forget. I had the best meal of my life at Sea Change. I highly recommend a visit!"

  • "Until we started patronizing Sea Change I had never samples oysters from different places at the same time. I was surprised to compare and contrast the different east and west coast types and the degrees of salinity and sweetness. So now I make it a point to order 4-6 oysters each time; have not yet developed a specific favorite although I tend to favor northeast over west."

  • "This restaurant has world-class food. Period. But portions are really really small, so be prepared to order several $14+ dishes to be satisfied. We loved the set up of this restaurant since we were going to the Guthrie theater. I've truly never had a more convenient or elegant evening. The food was exquisite with some of the freshest seafood available in the twin cities and the service was designed to accommodate theater-goers, just be prepared to pay for it. Our meal with wine was over $160. I was very happy with our experience, but appreciated knowing what to expect. Hope you enjoy your evening out, I highly recommend it!"

  • "Sea Change is the best seafood restaurant in the Twin Cities. The only competition for Sea Change is not other seafood spots such as Oceanaire, but fish and seafood selections at high-end restaurants such as La Belle Vie or I Nonni. Our dining experience was excellent. Once our server realized that we were not attending the evening play at the Guthrie, his service was leisurely and professional. We can highly recommend the octupus, arctic char, tuna, and roasted farro. All aspects of the meal were excellent, however. We had a window-side table, which was particularly nice, but the entire atmosphere of Sea Change is pleasing. We'll be going back soon!"

  • "My mother and I recently dined here pre-theater and had an excellent dinner. We shared the spaghetti and lobster dish which was excellent! Also shared dessert which was spectacular - great presentation and flavor! The service was excellent - the servers always do a great job, making sure we were finished in time to make the performance."

  • "Would not attend a Guthrie Event without considering Sea Change as the restaurant to go to before the show."
    Dined on 3/4/2014
  • "The food was alright. The service was amateur. I'm a foodie who works in the industry, and I was surprised by our lackluster server who insisted we follow his rigid ordering sequence. The salads were good, the appetizers were good, but tiny. The main course seafood was cooked well but otherwise unimpressive. Flavors not quite right, poor ratios of items and the vegetables, non existent. The chicken option, ironically, was the best item served! Dessert was delicious of course. For the price, go to Kincaids in downtown st paul."

  • "Our server was very attentive and filled our water glasses accordingly. I ordered the lobster spaghetti and my fiance ordered the porcini crusted Ahi, both entrees were fantastic. We also ordered the roasted cauliflower because we are genuinely obsessed with roasted vegetables lately... The charred flavor overtook the rest of the meal and that's really all we could taste lingering in our mouths the rest of the evening. I would recommend both entrees but not the side."

  • "I love the atmosphere here especially its proximity to the Guthrie. The ambience was great, service wonderful, but the food is mediocre. It attempts upscale and ends up obscuring the natural flavors of the food. I had pasta with lobster. It tasted like buttered spaghetti with small pieces erasers of squash and lobster. The desserts were beautiful however. Loved being with family.."

  • "We were very pleasantly surprised at the excellent quality of the food and the presentation. I had the prix fixe menu (arctic char entrée) and my wife had fresh oysters and two smaller plates. Wine choices were interesting but a fairly small selection. Service was attentive and not rushed even though we had a pre-theater reservation. Dessert and coffee were forgettable - perhaps the only bad mark of the experience."

  • "This was our first visit and it did not disappoint. We had a great bartender that recommended a fun cocktail. First course of razor clams was amazing. I had tuna perfectly rare and accompanied by mushrooms frazzled salsify and this crazy good goat cheese cake. Perfect for a cold mn night. My companion had trout which was perfect with a very fresh tasty pickled trout greens and grain salad. I am not enough of a foodie to identify all on the plates but it was perfect. Dessert was a two layer chocolate masterpiece with passion fruit curd and blackberry sorbet ...divine. And the service very knowledgable, perfect timing and with enough humor to make it fun. We finished exactly on time for our show. Love this place we will be back."
