Diner Reviews
  • "Went on a Monday night for date night with my wife. We're both gluten free, we generally avoid dairy, and we have two small dogs so a patio is a must. The patio was at probably 20% capacity when we went, so we were able to sit on the couch - very comfy. They have some trees with rope lights, which add a warm glow, and we had no problems hearing each other. We have some friends coming to town soon and we'll be bringing them here. Would recommend."

  • "Patio was lovely for brunch (under an umbrella otherwise wicked hot in the sun), good service. food was less interesting than we expected and tended to be overly rich. For example EBLT already a rich sandwich by content and aoli spread, was served on a brioche- would have been much more palatable on a ciabatta or pretzel roll- any kind of bread that was pain and could soak up the egg yolk. This was pretty much true for all the food- a lighter touch would improve the food greatly. unleaded drinks - which are just juice are served in stingy cocktail glasses- we expected juice glasses."

  • "Their brunch is delicious!!! I love their cast iron skillet Benedicts and my fiancé loves the cinnamon roll sandwich. They have great portion and everything is so tasty! This place has become our favorite brunch spot!"

  • "Residents of la costa since 76.We look out for new places to dine in & this one was on top of the list. We were looking forward to a satisfying & an enjoyable experience. We were seated graciously. The waitress took her own time to get us our wine.A bit too too long.Started off with the black mussels. Really good.BUT extremely HIGH in salt.We like to soak up the bread with the sauce & now it just got all left behind.Fig flatbread sounded great & thought it would be wonderful with more wine. The crust was THICK AND DRY..just ate the tiny bits of figs. Not edible.Bone marrow was simply just fatty to the palette.I wish I could say something positive. Hoping that I could add this one to my list of frequent places..I just have to cross it off now."

  • "We will definitely return. The pork belly on grits is a must-have, our server was amazing, the Pot Du Creme for dessert. Wow."

  • "Went to Del mar for the races and found Sea and Smoke as it was close to the track. Food was great, service was wonderful. Sat outside on the patio. I had the lamb, excellent melt in your mouth. Other guest had the duck which was great as well. We loved it so much, came back a 2nd night and had the chicken and a burger. Found great reasonably priced wines. Ryan was a great server, attentive and the hostesses were so gracious. I would go back again when in the area."

  • "I love a restaurant that takes reservations, even for a party of two! But beyond that convenience, the staff was very pleasant and accommodating and the servers did not hover over us while we ate or "bring the check early for our convenience" as a result we stayed for several rounds of mimosas. The brunch food options were all very different and delicious-looking. I chose the Croque Ma'dam and it is not disappoint. I had a bite of my friends' Salmon Benedict and that was yummy too! Definitely will return!"

  • "Due to nonstop rain at the track, we sought refuge at Sea & Smoke and took advantage of their great happy hour. Service at the bar with Austin was outstanding! Food is always fantastic with plenty of interesting options. I highly recommend the apple/fig/blue cheese flatbread. Can't wait to return to try the cinnamon bun bar on the weekend!"

  • "Been a Matt Gordon fan following his restaurants but this one was not a good experience. Was there for lunch once and it was good. However, Friday night at Sea & Smoke was not that great. The halibut which two from our table ordered was horrible and dry and hard. Service was just okay. Something went awry with this restaurant. Maybe it was just an off night - but should customers pay for an "off" night for the chefs in the kitchen?I don't think so/ If you are planning on a night out with friends then you shouldnt have such a bad experience."

  • "They had this Cesar Salad with the Gem Romaine that was killer! the romaine leafs were left whole so it was like you are eating a Cesar Taco with some great dressing, fluffy croutons, and sun dried tomatoes."

  • "I had avoided this restaurant for a while after it opened because of less than good word-of-mouth. I have been there three times recently, and each time it has been very good. This last time however, the service was slow, and when the last person in our party of three checked in with the hostess, she said there was no such reservation in my name. (Although there was when I, and my second quest checked in, separately.) the food is interesting, with a brunchy-themed menu. I have only been there for lunch, not sure if the menu changes for dinner, but I imagine it does. The patio is dog-friendly, the food is imaginative and delicious, and the staff is very friendly. I highly recommend the EBLT sandwich, and make sure you try the fries!"

  • "Fantastic updated comfort food menu, with plenty of lighter, veggie filled options as well. Very good execution and service. Beet salad was very fresh and thrillingly bracing, salmon Benedict on chili cornbread was just decadent enough without feeling like a heart attack. Would go back in a heartbeat!"

  • "How can you ruin a caesar salad? Well they did. The duck breast was tasteless and the wine selection was awful and very expensive. Outdoor dining was lovely. Too bad the food did not match. Yuch! And what's with the bread for purchase? It wasn't that good either. Our server was very good but nothing else was."

  • "The menu was great, the food was lovely (although my daughter did not like her grilled chicken). I totally want to come back... but my husband said no, because it was desolate. We were the only ones there for brunch on a Saturday around 12:30. We also sat outside which could use some more decoration."

  • "My husband and I were trying new places in our new neighborhood. We stumbled upon this restaurant and figured we'll try it out. It wasn't anything to boast about. I had the duck and my husband had the lamb shoulder. The duck was delicious but my husband's lamb shoulder was a little dry. Service was mediocre. It was a bit overpriced for the quality of food."

  • "Sea and Smoke's food is amongst the freshest, most flavorful and expertly prepared of North County restaurants. The Wild Alaskan salmon was cooked to perfection. Their cheese plates are to die for! Their specialty cocktails are light and refreshing - perfect for warm summer nights. The ambience is casual and the service excellent and not stuffy. An unpretentious restaurant where the food merits the wide acclaim it receives. Definitely worth multiple visits!!"

  • "Although we had a rather ditzy server, the manager picked up the slack. The food was absolutely amazing. They went out of their way to make sure my gluten free food was safe and delicious. My salmon dinner just couldn't have been any better. There are several locations to dine within the restaurant: outdoor and bar area as well as several different indoor areas."

  • "Perhaps, not the best time to go. It was quite busy and a bit understaffed for the crowd. Food good as always however so worth the crush."

  • "I've lived in San Diego for over 27 years, and this past weekend -- Sunday, July 13th, 2014 -- was my first time ever to hear about, and to visit, Sea and Smoke. I ate brunch here with my wife for my birthday and was pleasantly surprised. nice, clean place and the staff was real nice. our waitress? awesome. Emily came by our table often to check on us. we will, definitely, be going back."

  • "Went here with friends for brunch and had the most amazing time. They have a cinnamon bun bar where you can make custom cinnamon rolls with toppings + this Sunday the had an amazing guitar player - Blue Gruv. It really set the ambiance and made it so pleasant. The live music made the meal so much better."

  • "As an individual with very specific consumption preferences, I find it difficult to dine out often. (I cook and prepare about 90-95% of what I consume.) After making a reservation, I called in to let them know about my dietary needs. I especially requested an entree that was organic, vegan, gluten free and soy free, in addition to being high in protein. Taylor took the time to speak with Sous Chef Aaron/Erin and quickly worked together to ensure that my request will be met. When it came to dinner time, Sous Chef was able to deliver a delicious organic, vegan, gluten free and soy free plate that was delicious, satisfying and nutritious. What a nice treat! It was nice to feel heard and acknowledged."

  • "My fiancé and I came here for brunch.. Found it on yelp. We were kinda surprised it wasn't busier for Sunday brunch time. The decor was nice I liked the blue color on the walls in one of the dining areas and their patio is huge and they had a live music. Our server was nice and friendly, checked on us frequently but wasn't in our face. The food was absolutely amazing. I ordered the cast iron Benedict with pork belly -- cooked to perfection it was so good. They make it with brioche instead of an English muffin and I loved it. It had great flavor with a little kick. My fiancé ordered their cinnamon roll sandwich. I'm not a huge fan of cinnamon rolls, but it looked yummy. He said it was very tasty! We will definitely be back to try more!"

  • "The food was very good and our server was extremely friendly. However, the service was extremely slow. It probably took 25 minutes just to get out the salads. It is hard to say that the food was not worth the price because I thought the food actually tasted delicious. Everything was prepared well and seasoned appropriately but I still am not sure that the food was worth the prices. The wine list was impressive (but costed well over retail) but we had a very nice pinot noir. They did bring out a delicious (and free) dessert for my friend's birthday and it wasn't small (perfect for sharing) so that was a nice bonus. Overall a great meal but slow and overpriced."

  • "The serving staff were all extremely friendly, accommodating and knowledgeable about the menu, restaurant history, etc. The ambience is great -- quiet and comfortable. Nice change from loud foodie bar spots. The only quibble we had (both my companion and myself ordered the same entrée -- scallops) was that the food wasn't quite hot enough. That is why I rated food very good rather than excellent."

  • "Service was horrible and food was not outstanding, just ok. Scallops were cold and mac n cheese where bland. Perhaps there was an issue in kitchen as they kept apologizing for how long it took. At least could have offered another cocktail...as we had to flag down the waiter twice just to get a drink. Bummed we really wanted to enjoy an would have if the food would have been better."

  • "My husband and I celebrated our 27th wedding anniversary here, and we were quite impressed! I'm a foodie, and there were so many things on the menu that I've heard about from watching Food Network, so I got to try some of them for the first time! My husband had the Sea Bass and loved it! So many wonderful flavors and textures danced in his mouth! I HAD to have a bite of his, but my Scallops w/Pork Belly were amazing as well, and yes I gave my husband a taste of mine! We ordered two different desserts, and they comped both of them because it was our anniversary! The Hazelnut/Toffee Brownie was amazing! The whole experience was definitely a winner! We'll be back! Thanks Sea and Smoke!"

  • "I ate here last week and got a table in the courtyard, which was fantastic. From the front it looks like a big empty restaurant, but they walk you through to the back where there were many more people eating in an outdoor setting. I loved the atmosphere, I may come back here with friends just to hang out and get a drink. The food was good, I had the bone marrow and steak. I loved the steak and all the things which came along with it, but I wasn't blown away by the bone marrow (hence the four stars). The horseradish really threw it off for me. I loved the rest of my meal including the drinks and the desserts."

  • "My husband and I love Solace & the Moonlight lounge and Urban Solace and we're pleasantly surprised by Sea & Smoke too. Everything from the food, the wine to the ambiance of the restaurant was fabulous, and the staff were very friendly and helpful. We'll definitely come back."

  • "I had the king trumpet plate, which was well prepared and presented. I also ordered the Brussel sprouts to go along. They were prepared okay, could have used a little more "char" but that's a personal preference I suppose. My date had the polenta. It was flavorful but more like grits than polenta. The cheese board was very good as well, but the cheese portions were very small in comparison to the meat portions, personal preference is the opposite. The panna cotta was excellent. If you are seeking large portions this is not the place. If you like moderate portions of well presented food you will like it. Not overly busy even with the fair going on and plenty of free parking."

  • "This was our first visit for dinner. The dinner was great. It was quiet enough that a conversation can be carried without screaming. The wine list was good, and the service was excellent. This is a great place for dinner. We tried it for brunch and breakfast, and the menu was quite esoteric for breakfast for a person who likes his eggs simply over easy."

  • "Cool drinks (big list), great cheese and meat plate, fresh/well-prepared salmon... Friendly/professional service. Outdoor patio is nice if the weather is good. Better than you might expect for a mall restaurant (+ much better than prior place at this location)."

I had to order something extra on top( Scallps) to kick it up a knotch. Dessarts, nothing special ! But other than that a the theam & atmospher Was great!"
