Diner Reviews
  • "Grilled octopus was perfectly seasoned and very tender.....that was the only highlight of an otherwise less than memorable experience. Marrow bone was overly seasoned, too much parsley and lemon killed the marrow flavor. White anchovie salad was devoid of anchovies and drenched in dressing. Beef tartar was ok. Wild Salmon was over cooked. All would have been better if kitchen had used a "lighter hand" with seasoning and flame. Lastly, wine and scotch offering was disappointing."

  • "Food was average. Went in anticipation of cinnamon roll sandwich but was not impressed with cinnamon roll. cinnamon roll was hard and not flavorful. Didn't live up to the hype surrounding it :("

  • "Brunch was fantastic. I had the cinnamon roll sandwich with poached egg, ham and bacon. Amazing! Others in our group had eggs Benedict with salmon or steak and loved it too. Portions are just the right size and the fruit with the plates are a nice choice with kiwis, pineapple, grapes and blood oranges. We didn't drink, but they have a nice drink menu too. Fantastic and large outside patio too!"

  • "I love Solace in Encinitas, and this sister restaurant is very good as well for food and service, but if you want to be able to hear your companions, it's best to eat outside. Inside, it was uncomfortably loud, and I would only eat here again if I did so out in the patio or even at the bar."

  • "Enjoyed the salmon. Asked for it to be cooked through but it was a little dry. Waitress was good at first then abandoned us. Had to ask for a different waitress to take our order. Good menu choices and ambience."

  • "This is described as a brasserie, which I interpret as a casual dining spot modeled after a French cafe. It's a good description. The food selection was interesting but limited. We ordered the meat and cheese plate for 4 persons, some oysters baked with cheese and spinach and an excellent Ceaser salad with white anchovies. It was plenty for us but people with a big appetite might still need one of their entrees. Price for 4 persons including 3 martinis and a bottle of wine was $100. We will go back."

  • "We always know we will have a wonderful dinner at Sea and Smoke. The menu is always interesting, has lots of choices that are prepared creatively by Matt. We will be back soon to try your brunch. Ginny Stadwiser"

  • "I really enjoyed Sea & Smoke. My friend and I split the Sea Bass and Farroto. Both dishes were delicious - very flavorful and large portions. We also each tried one of the cocktails and loved those as well. Our bill was close to $70, which was a bit pricey considering we only ordered one entree, one side dish and two drinks, but we thought it was definitely worth the cost given how much we both enjoyed the meal."

  • "Enjoyed an early lunch, like the idea of the breakfast and lunch menu being served all day! Food was outstanding, roast bone marrow, tartar of beef, grilled octopus and the skillet Benedict! Natalie was perfect in her service and grace. We will return once again to one of the Solace concepts. Merci, Chef Dean"

  • "My girl friends and I went for a shared plate of chese and meats. The walnuts, honey and chutney were a great accompaniment. A couple of bottles of good wine too. The staff were attentive. We had a great night and will be coming back."

  • "Portions were extremely small and service was terrible. We waited too long for service during courses and we had to get up and ask for bill. Beet salad was small but good but sea bass was dry with little taste. Chocolate gelato also had no taste."

  • "Went here because of the buzz that it was a good restaurant. Found very few menu choices & they were odd combinations. I decided on the sea bass -- good but a very small portion -- maybe 3 oz. for $25. My husband had a terrible time finding anything he wanted and ended up with the burger which is not what he wants on a Saturday night. Said it was good but, again, not Saturday night fare. Considered the hanger steak but doesn't consider it a good cut, especially for the requested price. It was very loud inside -- too cool to be outside but understand that there is a nice patio. Service was good. We will not return to what we consider to be a mediocre restaurant."

  • "Food was great. Small plates are the way to go including the cheese and meat board. We sat outside which was lovely and inside was super loud. Really nice vibe but we were pretty ignored for the most part. I wasn't in a hurry so it wasn't a problem but there were large amounts of time before water got refilled. Anyway I would go go back."

  • "We had a party of 5 and arrived at 6:30 PM. The restaurant was half empty and we were seated immediately. The starters were great especially the pate. Salads were big so we had 2 for all 5 of us and still had some left. Then other diners started to arrive. By the time our main courses arrive. (By the way the duck was amazing, but forgo the lobster) The noise was so loud we were screaming at each other in order to have a conversation. This is the current trend of a lot of restaurants, but it really diminishes the dinning experience. Checking in with my fellow diners, they agreed that the noise just became too much."

  • "Went for a Tuesday breakfast meeting. Beautiful atmosphere. Waitress took our order and came back 5 minutes later saying they were out of cinnamon rolls. Ordered French toast instead which came out 10 minutes after everyone else's food was served, and was terribly oily. Put a damper on the meal. Wish the food was a little better."

  • "Sunday breakfast at Sea and Smoke did not disappoint. Sat outside on beautiful morning. Our table shared the french toast; what could be better than starting your meal with dessert? It was sweet and flavorful, with a hint of orange. I ordered the frittata which was perfectly prepared--I could taste all of the ingredients (eggs, tomatoes, feta, arugula). Attentive and friendly service. Highly recommend!"

  • "We really enjoyed our first visit to this restaurant. We ordered a beet salad and the warm spinach salad which were both excellent! I especially loved the poached egg on the spinach. For entrees we ordered the duck breast/confit leg and the wild caught salmon. They were both delicious, my salmon was cooked perfectly and he really enjoyed the duck."

  • "The ambience was great and the food was OK. The menu is ecelectic so it's not the place for fussy eaters though they accommodated my friend and served a burger with no sauces etc. WInes were nice but a bit pricey per glass. Wait staff super nice and efficient."

  • "A friend and I went to celebrate her birthday and ordered the house specialty, the skillet eggs benedict. They were presented beautifully, though the cornbread base was cold and overly sweet and the spinach in very meager supply. The eggs, hollandaise, bacon, etc. should have been much warmer but were tasty nevertheless. The ice tea was especially good as were the sorbets. The patio setting was lovely. Service was a little intrusive until I put my credit card out after receiving the bill and then we couldn't get any attention for quite awhile. LOVE the all day brunch offerings - brilliant!! All said and done - I'd definitely try it again."

  • "I recently dined at Sea and Smoke with a girlfriend of mine. We shared 2 appetizers and an entree and everything we had was delicious and cooked to perfection. I especially like the cauliflower cheese dip. We also had the fig tartine and a fish dish that were filled with a variety and perfect balance of flavors. Outside was very cute and had wonderful ambiance and was nice and warm with enough heaters. Our server was attentive and a manager came by to make sure we were happy, which is always a special touch that I notice and appreciate. Had a wonderful time and can't wait to come back!"

  • "I definitely enjoy the ambience, food and cocktail menus at sea & smoke but experienced very poor service for a recent birthday celebration dinner. Service tends to make it or break it for me. I'd return for drinks and apps in the bar but personally wouldn't try it for a proper meal again."

  • "Met a friend from LA at Sea&Smoke for dinner and catching up. It was mid-week and the inside dining room where we ate was moderately full as was the downstairs bar area. Nice relaxed atmosphere and no pressure to hurry up and eat so they could turn the table so we were able to dine and chat over the next 2 hours. Service was excellent but not intrusive. Food was delicious and prepared as requested. Will definitely go back."

  • "This restaurant isn't bad, but for the price they charge, I expected a lot more. Their signature breakfast, the cornbread benedict, was very poor. I wouldn't waste my time going back."

  • "I have been to lunch and two times to Happy Hour. Food is especially good and beef is from Neimans. Service has always been very helpful and not oppressive."

  • "Sea and Smoke seems all mixed up. It is priced like a steak house, with some entrees requiring a separate price for a side dish. But the atmosphere (picnicy tables, very casual servers) seemed more like a less expensive restaurant. The meals themselves were tasty, but overpriced, and the serving sizes were small."

  • "Had lunch twice in the same weekend -- despite the fact that on my first visit, my grilled cheese sandwich arrived minus the cheese! The staff were great and fixed the problem. The patio is a lovely setting. On a 2nd visit with different friends, we really enjoyed the Sunday jazz duo & all liked the food. Had some trouble with the interface between Open Table and Sea & Smoke. Somehow the restaurant reported us as a no-show. When I got the threatening message from Open Table (didn't appreciate the wording of the message), I called the restaurant. I wanted to be sure it got cleared up & that I didn't have a repeat problem after 2nd visit. Definitely a mess-up in the system. Sea & Smoke cleared it up, which I appreciated."

  • "We had a nice dinner including a wide range of items from a really fantastic burger to a vegetarian entree to tasty and rich lamb shoulder. Nice wines by the glass (but a bit smaller than typical). Bar downstairs looked really nice - we definitely need to return for happy hour during one if their specials. The service was very friendly and attentive. Don't miss the PB&J dessert!"

  • "Went there for late lunch on a weekday, so we were one of only 2 tables there. Space is beautiful and much bigger than expected. Some dishes were outstanding, but some others were simply average and the execution inconsistent. For example, the farro salad on one of the dishes was way undercooked and hard. Service was very friendly and attentive, although a little amateurish. Overall the experience was good, but it could have been great if only the food was more consistent and the service more polished. Restaurant is pretty new, so we look forward to going back and hopefully some of these issues will be solved."

  • "We went during the week for a birthday lunch. The restaurant was not very crowded and our waiter (the bartender) was very friendly. She remembered our reservation note about this being a birthday lunch. They have a great selection of local microbrewery drafts. The food selection is interesting and has some unusual items on the menu, like bone marrow. Overall there is something for everybody. The portions are reasonably large. Everything was cooked to perfection. They pack up leftovers in the kitchen and even label them with name and date ... a nice gesture. We have to come back for happy hour on the patio."

  • "I saw mixed reviews but since I live nearby I tried it, again. The burger was good ( Nieman Ranch) but the side of Brussel sprouts was awful. The old fashioned my friend ordered was strong but not well made. The hostess should NOT have said she was giving us a "romantic" table, I was with my neighbor, whose wife had just died. Sorry."
