We wanted to have a special dinner for a special occasion and choosing Scrimshaw was the correct decision. The Service is such an important part of the meal to us and Scrimshaw provided the level of service that is lacking at many other restaurants today.

We went to Scrimshaw for a special birthday dinner with a friend of ours. It's quiet ambience was welcomed over many louder plate clashing, utensil clanging, voice inhibiting venues. With plenty of space and beautiful colonial atmosphere, it was a setting perfect for an intimate gathering for 3 or 4. With a varied menu that should please most anyone, it's broken into courses... this is not a place to go if you are looking for a quick cheap dinner, fair warning. We opted out of the courses and ordered dinner. Oddly enough the three of us decided on fish, unfortunately the "birthday boy" got the wrong 'sole' dish, but did not speak up until one of us noticed. Everything was wonderful, desserts, well we couldn't finish. We'd go back!

As always, the food, service and atmosphere were second to none. I have never had a meal there that wasn't amazing. The wide array of appetizer, meal and wine choices provides options to please everyone. Not many restaurants offer the oysters and escargots. Scrimshaw is the gem of the capital district.

The experience for My granddaughter and I even exceeded our high expections. The Oysters Rockefeller set the high water mark in quality, better, I'm my estimation than Gallatoirs, in New Orleans, their reputed birthplace. Air travelers looking for just the right place for that evening before the trip, you will have found that spot

We ate here in August on our way home from vacation. We were so impressed with the food and ambiance, that we made reservations months in advance for our wedding anniversary celebration. We had to drive two and a half hours to get here, but we were certainly, not disappointed. The food was outstanding and the service was excellent. I especially loved the chilled strawberry soup and my lobster tail was wonderful. Our server was very attentive and gave me a lovely long stem rose with a container of cookies when we finished our meal. We stayed the night in your beautiful hotel. We hope to make this a yearly event.

Six of us dined at Scrimshaw and had a very nice meal. We had not dined there in many years. The service was outstanding and the room is very nice. The food was quite good but I would hesitate to call it great.............nothing to complain about but it just did not meet our idea of a truly great dining experience.

The meals were well-prepared as you would expect for entrees that are $27-$33 range but not 5-star. It did take a little while to get us our drinks so we ordered drinks and our entrees together. I prefer to sip on a beverage while reading the menu. the potato side was rather unflavorful, seemed more for presentation. All in all a nice dining experience and the piano player was a nice touch, as was the rose for the ladies. I was surprised for a Friday night how empty the Scrimshaw was. Pricey?

BUT, THEN, GETTING WHAT YOU PAY FOR IS ALWAYS A PLEASURE AND SOMETIMES A SURPRISE. SCRIMSHAW IS A MUST ON YOUR DINING LIST. YOU WILL NOT BE DISAPPOINTED.

Entering the dining room we were the only people there at 5:30. They sat us right by the piano and by 6:00 piano player was playing and we could not have a conversation. The service level of the restaurant was very good with more attention from the wait staff than the waitress as she was servicing maybe 4-5 tables by dinner's end. Clam casinos left lot to be desired as they were not chopped or diced and actually the clam was not separated from the shell. Main course was overdone. My salmon had very little if any flavoring and my wife's steak was overdone. The potato the only starch offered was a Scrimshaw potato which had the taste of being left over mashed potatoes that were recooked. Vegetable serving was a mini carrot and mini zucchini.

I was staying at the Desmond for a conference. I went to dinner at the Scrimshaw on a Wednesday night. The service was appropriately attentive. I ordered an appetizer, entree and dessert with coffee. All three were delicious. The seasoning was perfect; I didn't need to touch the salt/pepper shakers once. I would definitely go back.

This restaurant was no better than any other good restaurant in the area. My husband had veal Oscar ( which was made correctly) but the white asparagus was so tough he couldn't cut it. My swordfish was overlooked to the point of mushiness. Appetizers (escargot and oysters ) were very good; house salads had some interesting components and were good, and the strawberry Napoleon was excellent. If you want ambience and better than average service and so- so food this is your place. Bill without drinks, but with coffee about $110 not including tip.

My wife and I visited on Friday evening for a special birthday celebration. She ordered a featured trout dish that arrived with wonderful presentation. The trout, however, had a very strong "fishy" odor and taste. So strong, in fact, that she was barely able to swallow the first bite. The staff was great and removed the dish and offered to replace the item with another selection. However, with my dinner having already been served, the romantic ambiance of the meal was lost and she opted not to reorder! To their credit, the manager removed the charge for her dinner from our bill. Overall, the setting was beautiful and staff was very professional, but it just wasn't meant to be our night at this location.

My wife and I made reservations at Scrimshaw as part of an overnight trip to the region. Needless to say we were rather disappointed in our experience given the accolades the venue has received. We sat down at our table and waited almost 15 minutes before anyone stopped by to present the wine list. Then another 15 minutes for our menus. Considering there were only three other tables, the service should have been more attentive. My wife had the lobster bisque, which was essentailly void of lobster, and her entree was oversalted. My food was decent, although I expected more from a "fine dining" establishment. The restuarant is nice in terms of decor and the piano was nice to listen to. We'll find someplace else next time.
